Présentation de l'éditeur

This complete and PRACTICAL music theory course for guitarists takes you on a journey starting from simple major scale construction, it's 3 and 4 note harmonisations, and common chord sequences, to a massively deep and structured dissection of all the modes of the major scale.

The 7 modes are broken down into their constituent intervals, triads, arpeggios and Pentatonic scales, with each theoretical approach discussed and analysed and bought to life with over 200 notated examples, licks and professional backing tracks.

Each musical concept is explained in clear English, with advanced substitutions and methodologies presented without any academic language or confusing 'muso-speak'.

After the many soloing possibilities are discussed for each mode, the author's favourite sounds are given as a concise list of recommended approaches. This will save you many hours of practice time, and provide solid starting point to explore the best of each tonality.

Throughout the book, many songs which use the ideas being described are linked to via youtube so you can hear the musicians you love applying the concepts in popular songs

The author makes this publication available as a free, full colour .pdf when you buy the Kindle or Paperback edition, allowing you to print off the exercises and to make the book accessible to readers with earlier Kindle models. Details are inside.

All in all, this is a structured and practical approach to learning the most important aspects of modern guitar music theory in a hands on and musical environment. The emphasis is on playing the theory, not just knowing it so it will keep you creative for years to come.

The book includes 7 studio quality backing tracks, one for each mode that have been specially written by Guitar Techniques Magazine contributor Jacob Quistgaard - aka 'Quist'

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A practical, useful, informative guide for guitarists looking to play better 12 juin 2013

I'm in my 60's, and I've been playing guitar and other stringed instruments (mandolin, fiddle, banjo) for most of my life. I've always depended on my ear, which is pretty good, and on the bits of theory I'd pick up here and there. Mostly I've played out of patterns, major scales, and minor pentatonic scales. A lot of guitar can be played out of patterns, but I've always felt I was missing a whole world of possible sounds and expressions, and decided to do something about it. I began buying books on various aspects of guitar playing, mostly tending toward jazz chords, arpeggios, extensions, and that sort of thing. I've found a few books worth studying, but this one, The Practical Guide to Modern Music Theory for Guitarists, is definitely the one I'd be happy to refer any guitarist looking to better his/her playing abilities. Mr. Alexander
begins the book with a fairly complete look at how music works--the major scale, minor scales, how chords are built, common chord progressions, and the like. I thought I knew most of this stuff, but he managed, with straightforward, clear expositions, to fill me in on details that I hadn't realized I hadn't known.

The meat of the book, once the preliminaries are out of the way, focuses on modes and how they can be utilized; building chords on the individual degrees of each mode, soloing, and much more. There's much work to be done by the student here, but much to be gained. I've been working with the Dorian mode to begin, but I'll be utilizing the information in this well-written book for many months, at least. I feel like my playing has already benefitted from the studies presented here, though I've only begun. I can't recommend this book highly enough to my fellow guitarists.

This guy really knows how to write an instruction book that is actually useful. After buying a few titles on Amazon and being disappointed, Joseph's books have been by far the most useful (at this time I have three of his books).

I have been an acoustic-strumming-only guitar player for years. I bought an electric a few years ago, but I have basically been playing it like an acoustic. Now I'm really trying to expand my playing. I do know quite a bit of music theory for a non-pro musician. That knowledge let me skim through the first section of the book and get to the modal exercises which is more "guitar specific". Great help in learning to improve my lead guitar playing.

Most instruction books like this have a CD with the physical book, but offer nothing for Kindle versions making the books worthless. However, with this book you get to download the audio from his web site. Very awesome. And if you want the book as PDF, he'll send that also.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 These books are a must if you want to improve your playing 5 août 2013

I purchased Joseph's first book which was the 15 Essential Guitar Lessons, after that I was hooked. He takes a plain and simple approach without all the terminology that often loses the player with context. His exercises help you achieve the playing you always wanted. This is the same with this theory book he explains the theory and shows you the practical application of how to use it. He also fosters your mind to create stuff with the theory he teaches you. I have several theory books I have purchased and after buying this book those books have never left my shelf. I only use this book because I want the down and dirty not 50 pages of confusing material that leaves me wondering. This book will make you understand how chords and scales are created all the way down to how licks are created and chords.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Music Theory that everyone can understand 6 mai 2013

I have been playing guitar for almost four years and I have read a variety of music theory books. For the most part, they never really held my interest. This one does.

What makes this book different is that it focuses on music theory applied to the guitar. Joseph Alexander writes in a very clear and concise style that is easy to follow. Further, multiple examples are provided for every concept being taught and these examples all have audio tracks available free from the author's website. There are also backing tracks available for each of the modes being taught along with links to well known songs played in the corresponding mode.

If you been wanting to learn music theory for the guitar and how to solo over the different modes and actually understand why something sounds good, this is the book for you.

Take the time to download the kindle sample and look at the table of contents to see just how much information is packed into this book. You won't be disappointed.

My initial impression, after reviewing the table of contents and then the actual contents, is that this is just the sort of book/instruction I was hoping to find. I find the explanations to be thorough and in particular appreciate the examples of (available) songs to emphasize key points. I also greatly appreciate that, unlike many ebooks, sound files are available for further instruction.

Now to find the time to actually read and practice.
