My husband has just bought this book (ours actually has a more beautiful cover with several kinds of vegetables, no idea whether it is a newer or older edition) because he is about to retire and we have a place for quite a substantial vegetable garden in our new house in France. What a pretty book (it contains more than 800 photos) and what a wealth of information contained in it! For the time being we haven't put anything into practice but we will soon and we hope to end up with a vegetable patch as beautiful as the ones shown here! This is a book with an eye to the practical side of things, useful for beginners like us who know very little but I am sure also more experienced gardeners who want to solve some of their problems! The authors talk about allotment basics, the soil and soil management, planning the crops, basic techniques, they give a lot of information on lots growing lots of different vegetables and fruit and nuts, there is a chapter about plant health with pest controls and much more and a gardener's calendar, not month by month but what you need to do for example in early, mid and late Spring and it goes on for each season! We already have a few gardening books like one only about fruit trees, one about kitchen herbs, a French one about the organic garden but I am sure this one will become our bible! Well worth the purchase!
