Présentation de l'éditeur

Deadly poison...or exquisite cure?

Noah fell from an eighth story balcony as a toddler, cracking open his skull and shattering his body. The accident would've killed a human, but even shifter blood can't heal some damage. After the pack recommended a mercy killing, Noah's family ran. But there's no outrunning the mating pact formed before Noah's birth.

Wade, the new alpha, chooses an adult Noah to fulfill the pact. Wade believes the previous alpha was a fool to reject Noah as a weak and inferior wolf, but Noah's family was wrong to hide him and starve his wolf, too. Human doctors with human medicines are poison to shifter physiology. Now that Noah is fully grown, halting his shift to retain the pins, plates, and bars holding him together hurts rather than helps him, and for Wade, more than Noah's recovery is at stake.

Noah's family sacrificed everything to keep him alive. Noah will do whatever it takes to save them--including mate with the alpha who is determined to correct past mistakes and defeat old prejudices contaminating the shifter community.

Too bad some still believe Noah is the true poison...and should be culled from the pack for good.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 An enjoyable shifter romance, but nothing too out of the ordinary 15 décembre 2013
Par Charly T. Anchor - Publié sur Amazon.com
*NOTE: I received a free review copy of this story.*
Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 7/10

- I love reading stories about characters who are physically or mentally imperfect. (Possible slight SPOILER here) And I worried with this story that Noah’s werewolf shifts would miraculously cure his physical handicaps. I was very happy that this was not the case.
- There are a couple of interesting additions to werewolf lore that I liked, such as male wolves being able to have babies. I also thought the integration of human medicine and shifter healing was well done…the way the shifters mistrust human conventions like x-rays and bloodwork but begrudgingly agree to work alongside the human doctors who have treated Noah his entire life.
- Gregg does a good job of establishing how different the characters’ situation is from that of a typical shifter story. Noah is frightened of Wade in some ways yet mesmerized by him, attracted to him but with little feeling (at the beginning) other than dislike of his brusque ways and his politics. The relationship is not your typical instalove werewolf mating romance.

- It took me a while to warm up to Wade. I’m sure Gregg was going for an “enemies to lovers” sort of thing, and that’s why Wade’s behavior is so jerkish at the start, but the author might have done almost *too* good a job with it. I had a hard time forgiving Wade for his treatment of Noah at the beginning, and I cursed Noah for giving in to Wade’s seduction so easily.
- The climax and its resolution all works out too quickly and too easily.

Overall comments: If you’re looking for something with a decent amount of fairly detailed sex, and only a token amount of angst, this should fit the bill. I’m a sucker for werewolf stories, so I liked it, but those readers who like shifter stories only when they’re unusual might not be terribly impressed by this one.

If I could give it another couple of stars I would. The essence of a good read is the hook luring you in so you can't put the book down, the words flow painting the pictures. This is a good read. I was unsure about the story once I started, it seemed a little dark to start with. But then it wrapped around me and pulled me in. Noah was hurt when he was four, he fell eight stories and survived only because he was a shifter. But there was massive damage and the pack wanted his family to kill him as an act of mercy - they ran. Humans are aware of shifters but shifters have their own medicines and ways - no-one ever took a wolf to the humans to mend - until Noah's family did. They saved him but there were costs. His family is isolated because they broke shifter law and Noah's wolf is dormant due to wolfsbane infusions. His family ran out on a mating pact with the Alpha but that wasn't pursued, and anyway, the eldest (a daughter) has mated a human so the Pact is void. Isn't it? Enter Wade, the new Alpha, who wants the Mating Pact fulfilled or the family will pay for their flouting of the law. Under shifter law he can now choose his mate from the remaining siblings (all male). He chose the smallest boy (20), the whelp, the broken one and forces him to the Alpha house to be his mate. Is he going to force Noah to bite him and mate but then not bite in return? If he does that Noah will have no other, but the Alpha can move on...justice served? But things aren't as dire as Noah believed - we go on Noah's journey of discovery, love and lust and bonding. Poison has brought him to Wade. Even though his family try to retrieve Noah - Noah knows he must stay with Wade to protect them all. And then there is the possibility of pups...from Noah and Wade...what's up with that? As Alpha Mate tradition dictates Noah have babies...but Wade says no. The story is different from what you think is happening at the beginning. Excellent read.

I received an ARC from the author for review. Some spoilers follow.

I really enjoy reading about characters with disabilities and deep flaws. This story had all of that.

The two MCs both see some growth during the story and I appreciate that. Noah has severe injuries that have considerable effect on his life outlook (I like that his problems are not miraculously healed) and Wade is a bit of an anti-hero.

Wade is less than altruistic in his desires for Noah. What he is really after is acceptance for an injured child that he loves but he also finds himself impressed by and attracted to the deep inner strength Noah possesses. I felt for the young girl but she was a brat so I never really vested in her character which made me slow to love Wade's character.

One of the things I love are Kari's writing is that her characters are real, flaws and all. I can easily envision that mistakes the characters make happening just that way in real life.

By the time I got to the end of the story, I was pulling for everyone, the growing pack and the damaged family. They were all learning from their mistakes and moving forward.

Best of all, there was a HEA that fit. Definitely a reread for me. :)

There are two things I can expect from a Kari Gregg novel: hot sex and various characters who have ulterior motives. That is exactly what you get in Pretty Poison, Gregg’s newest shifter book. The reader is introduced to Noah, a disabled shifter who lives with his family on the outskirts of a pack. Enter Wade, the pack’s Alpha who comes to Noah’s family and demands they honor a contract of marriage made years before. Since Noah’s sister ran off and married a human, Wade picks from the remaining brothers for his “bride.” And to everyone’s surprise he chooses Noah as his mate. Noah’s not happy but goes along with the proposal because if he refuses Wade could have his entire family killed. What ensues is a turbulent and rather sweet love story as Noah and Wade learn to love each other and made changes to their pack.

Since I read about 90% paranormal books these days, it takes a really good shifter book to make me sit up and take notice. What I loved about Pretty Poison was that we finally get a disabled shifter character, whose serious injuries do not automatically heal. Noah walks with crutches and his disability has made him a liability to his old pack, they even suggested a “mercy” killing, which is why the family removed themselves from that pack. Any type of disabilities are rare in M/M books, more especially more rare in paranormal books. I thought the author handled Noah’s limitations and his eventual semi-recovery in a very unique manner.

The second best thing about Pretty Poison is the scorching hot sex scenes. K.A. Mitchell, look out for Ms. Gregg! Wow. Wade and Noah burn up the sheets and cement their bond their many, many sexy scenes. Those readers looking for a “is-it-hot-in-here?” novel will not be disappointed.

The third item I enjoyed were the secondary characters. We have strong female characters, a great beta character and the dynamic of the pack is explored very well in my opinion. My only complaint and why I did not give this 5 stars was I felt there should have been one more extra scene between Noah and Wade — like a date — that didn’t involve sex. There were some very sweet moments between the two men, but I felt more more would have rounded out the book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it all the paranormal fans out there. It has something different that I think most M/M readers would like.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Alpha wolf Wade 'rescues' Noah... or does he? 25 décembre 2013

This book was excellent and I am sure I will read it more than once. Alpha Wolfe Wade storms into Noah's home, where he has lived in seclusion since a childhood fall crippled him and demands him as a mate to fulfill an old promise. The old Alpha of the pack at the time of Noah's accident and the healers of the pack had wanted Noah to be put down, as someone who could never be a viable or useful member of their pack. Noah's parents had fled with their family and taken him to human doctors who had saved his life. But now a new pack alpha wants to right old wrongs and he believes the human doctors are no longer helping but actually hurting Noah. Wade plans to mate the reluctant Noah and use werewolf medicine on him, but his true motivations may be darker. Noah, integrated into the human world, finds many werewolf cultural practices old-fashioned and struggles to introduce modern technology and personal rights to the wolves. The plot was really interesting and different, sort of a cross between Shannon West's more dramatic Dark Hollow werewolf series and some of my other most beloved but gentler favorites. I am expecting great things from this author in the future. If you like this book you may also like "Run With The Moon" Run with the Moon (Men of Silo) by Diana DeRicci or "Called To Mate" Called to Mate (Pack Mates, Book 1) by Lynn Tyler or The Alpha's Ardor (Wolves of Flathead) "The Alpha's Ardor".
