"Pretty Woman meets The Big Bang Theory meets Grey's Anatomy!" --Goodreads Reviewer

It's a desperate step, but it's the only way she can go to medical school and pay her mother's mounting hospital bills.

Adam Drake, the enigmatic auction winner, is a software prodigy who made his first millions at seventeen. Now, in his mid-twenties, he's sexy, driven and--as CEO of his own gaming company--he's used to making the rules. She can't tell if he's playing her...or if he's playing for keeps.

Brenna Aubrey

This ARC was given by Silver Griffon Associates via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I can honestly say I was not thrilled to hear this book was about gaming, but it spiked my interest enough to give it a shot! NEVER judge a book by its cover! My husband is an avid gamer, so I am very familiar with the gaming world and thought to myself how could this make for a good romance novel? Not only is it a great romance novel, but it is sexy as Hell.

Adam and Emilia (Mia) have great chemistry together.

Emilia Strong is not the poor, weak victim that you want to slap sense into during the entire novel. She was rejected by her own father before she was even born, but grew up in a loving home with her mother. Mia is a brilliant college student awaiting graduation and the chance to retake her MCAT to begin her premed dreams. She failed the last time because her mom was fighting cancer. Now that her mom is better, she faces losing their home and business. Mia decides to type up a manifesto on her gaming blog and auctions off her virginity to the highest bidder. Mia sees this as her mom's only chance to save the house.

Adam Drake wins the auction and has his own reasons for wanting to be the winner of Mia's auction. Little does he know how empty his very successful life has become and is constantly trying to find ways to extend their one night contract.

"Every minute I spent with you made me want a hundred minutes more."-Adam

He and Mia are happy with their "no dating" policy in order to achieve their dreams. However, they find they both share way more things in common and won't give up control. This is a very well written novel that does NOT leave you hanging for dear life on the side of a mountain. However, there is a book #2 and #3 coming out soon. I will be waiting anxiously to find out about more of Adam and Mia. Hopefully the next one will be in Adam's POV.

3.5 stars

This started out being about a 4-star read for me, but the more I read the more I felt like this fell into too many new adult/rich-billionaire romance novels tropes.

I immediately liked Mia, she was an interesting, smart, and strong (appropriate since that's her last name) main character. The manifesto she posts on her gaming blog, about the cost of virginity in history and how she wants to kind of claim her own virginity for herself by auctioning it off, was really interesting.

The man who wins the auction, billionaire Adam Drake, took me by surprise. I didn't expect him to want to be so intimately involved with Mia, I guess I kind of expected that would grow over time, or to be such an a-hole at the beginning. It was kind of like the more time Adam and Mia spent together the more of Mia's personality fell away until she was just this lost, sad girl.

Even though it bothered me that Mia lost so much of herself to Adam, I don't think it was completely inappropriate for the story. Mia is fighting some bad experiences from her childhood (her dad abandoning her, being sexually assaulted as a teen) and she's built a lot of walls around herself (see staying a virgin until 22-years-old) so it makes sense these would have to fall down before she can move on with her life, but I still didn't love the way that it happened or the person Mia became.

Adam also has some secrets, but I thought they were pretty easy to figure out. I correctly guessed one of his secrets towards the beginning of the story, but I don't think it took away from the story at all, I kind of liked that I knew this big secret (or assumed I knew) that Mia didn't, even though I thought Mia was kind of ridiculous for not being able to figure it out.

What put the nail in the 4-star coffin for this book was when I got to the end and saw that it's part of a trilogy. Seriously?! I'm ok with where this book ended and where we left the characters. I didn't love the second half of the book, but I did like it. But part of the reason why I didn't love it was because I felt like, to get more out of the story, situations had be keep being created to keep providing drama to the story. And yes, that's how stories are told, but I felt like, by the end, it was crossing over into unnecessary drama to keep the story going. And two more books of this story really make me worry about how much unnecessary drama there will be.

Bottom Line: I enjoyed this book, especially Breena Aubrey's writing which I found smart, fun, and fast-paced. I particularly liked the first half of the book, but I didn't love Mia as a character by the end and I thought there was some dragging out and inserting in of drama to keep the story going. Still, it's an interesting story by a solid author and if you're looking for a sexy, smart, somewhat-drama-filled story I would recommend this one.

I received an electronic review copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley (thank you!). All opinions are my own.

This book reminded me of very well written fan-fiction. While the characters were fun, relatable, and Adam quite sexy. I couldn't shake the feeling of Deja vu. From the billionaire boyfriend to the narrative style of Mia, with her classic desire to be independent put at odds with the tropes of the romance genre, the whole thing felt like an attempt to update the contents of a romance genre on the outside without really changing the inner workings.

While the interactions and dialogue between Adam and Mia was carefully crafted to leave the reader hot and bothered, there wasn't enough happening outside of the bounds of the relationship to make the characters feel fully human and relatable. Everything centered on the stop and start of their romance -- even their past troubles could only be sorted out within the bounds of love.

Yes, I get that a story is a Romance, but for me this felt so centered on their relationship it made Mia's whole feminist argument fall completely flat, because in the end she was entirely defined by her relationship with Adam. Perhaps I wouldn't have minded that if she was more disturbed by her own cognitive dissonance or more self aware, but she felt more like a teenager than a twenty-something to me.

Anyway. Overall, a solid beach read, but the story didn't leave me craving more, and I probably won't be returning for the sequel. Still a very capable writer good with craft. The perfect example of a three star book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fabulous debut and great love story - Top Pick! 5 décembre 2013

The premise of this book hooked me from the start. I wanted to read it before I knew the story behind it. What’s the story you ask? This book went up for auction but at the end of the day, Brenna Aubrey decided to self-publish it.

In reading At Any Price, I can clearly see why it went up to auction. It’s a great read, great writing and even though I knew going in that it was the first of three books featuring Mia and Adam, the ending left me completely satisfied and eager to read the next book.

Long story short, Mia auctions off her virginity online at the age of twenty-two. She needs money. Her mother has cancer and needs money for treatment as well as to keep the ranch she owns and manages. Mia herself needs money to pay for medical school. She has this Virgin’s Manifesto she posts on her Girl Geek blog (gaming blog) and the comparison she draws to how women’s virtue have sort of always been given away to the highest bidder is a very very good one. After reading it, I totally got the ‘logical’ reason she decided to auction her virginity off and get something for herself in return.

Now of course we know the winner of this big is the hero, who is Adam Drake, a software prodigy who, in his mid-twenties, is the CEO of his own gaming company. Why on earth does this sexy, hot, driven young man have to resort to buying Mia’s virginity online? Yes, there is a very good reason and most readers will pick up on this pretty soon in the book but that knowledge in no way spoils the journey we take with them.

Adam initially rubs Mia the wrong way. So much so, she’s ready to take Mr. Runner-up. Heath, her good friend and fellow gamer, tries to convince her to stick with Adam and eventually she does. What begins between Mia and Adam is this a friendship and a powerful attraction. There’s no wham bam and thank you ma’am devirginization. And it’s the building of this relationship between them that is the heart of the book. It’s sexy, it’s emotional and Adam such a great hero. There are plenty of times that Mia could have just tossed in the towel and called the whole thing off. She doesn’t. And we know why. Once the deed is done, Adam would be out of her life.

In the end, this whole auction thing is turned on its head. There is nothing unsavory about it. It’s two young people falling in love. Readers won’t be surprised at the revelation at the end as I said before, but that’s not what drives this love story. And thank goodness, we get a lovely HFN and I will definitely tune in to books 2 and 3 in the quest of their final HEA.

Great, eye-catching premise and a great read. I would definitely recommend Brenna’s debut and she's now on my author's-to-watch list.

The definition of prostitution is the practice or occupation of engaging in sexual activity with someone for payment.

And no matter how many times Mia attempts to justify her deal with Adam, it is exactly that. Selling your body, or parts of your body, for money.

This was a weird ass book. Like an interesting weird. I’ve NEVER read anything remotely close to it. That's for damn sure.

I originally chose to read it because of the gaming aspect. I love that Mia is an online gamer (although I’m accustomed to more of a console type gaming) and she is working towards being a doctor. Her life is normal and great and I wasn’t prepared for what would happen. (Yeah, I read the synopsis but I didn’t realize it would be done so bluntly).

So many books that I’ve been reading lately have a heroine with a terrible sexual assault history that ruins their chances with future men. I saw it coming in this one and didn’t know how it would affect her relationship with Adam. (Not that much, actually. She’s had years to recover and apparently talking about it to a shrink solves all problems. Kinda pissed me off).

Mia was actually a very strong character. She’s had a rough hand of life dealt to her and she keeps on going. (I, on the other hand, go into an emotional loss every time I watch an episode of Supernatural). She perseveres and looks forward to her future. As much as it saddened me to read what had happened to her, I saw that her future was much brighter and I felt better about finishing this book.

And then Adam shows up, winning bidder of her strange ass auction, and her whole life erupts into something more.

Better? Maybe.
Confusing? Totally.
Sexy? Oh, yes, Mr. Drake. So much of that.

Adam Drake is an interesting character. The gaming nerd of our dreams all grown up. Suit and tie wearing business tycoon. Adam is sweet and I loved getting to know his family! That may have been my favorite part of this entire book. He grows throughout the book and becomes better for it.

At Any Price is written very well and the author handled the situation as best as she could, considering the circumstances. I don’t know how she thought this up, but Lifetime needs to put this in pre-production immediately.

Because as strange and awkward as this book is, it’s an enjoyable read. I loved all of the characters. There was humor where need be. My eyes got all teary a time or two. It was just a cute, weird, sexy book.

I’m rambling, I know. It’s cold and I’m waiting for the Doctor Who special to start and my feelings for this book are strong.
