What Do All the Longest-living Individuals Have in Common?

If there is a known single marker for long life, as found in the centenarian and animal studies, it is low insulin levels.”

Research across the board has shown that long-lived individuals (animals and humans) share the following characteristics:

Low fasting insulin levels
Low fasting glucose
Optimally low leptin
Low triglycerides
Low percentage of visceral body fat
Lower body temperature

One single longevity marker stands out among all long-lived animals and persons above the rest, however, and that’s low insulin levels.

In July of 2009 the eagerly awaited results of a twenty-year study on the effects of caloric restriction on primates were finally published in the journal Science. Two groups of Rhesus monkeys (selected for their strong similarity to us) were studied: one group of monkeys was allowed to eat as much as they wanted, and the other group was given a sufficiently nutrient-dense diet with 30 percent fewer calories than they would normally consume. Twenty years later only 63 percent of the monkeys that ate as much as they wanted were still alive. Thirty-seven percent of them had died due to age-related causes. And the caloric restriction group? Eighty-seven percent were still alive and only 13 percent had died of age-related causes. Throughout their lives the calorically restricted group maintained superior health and aging-related biomarkers in every area: brain health, metabolic health and rate, insulin sensitivity, and cardiovascular vitality. The caloric restriction group enjoyed a threefold reduction in age-related disease! Also, they lost fat weight but maintained healthy levels of lean tissue mass. They also retained greater brain volume, which normally shrinks with age and glycation, but more than that they retained superior cognitive function. The cardiovascular disease rate of the caloric-restricted group was fully half the rate of the control group. Forty percent of the control group developed diabetes (or pre-diabetes). Not ONE single monkey in the calorically restricted group developed either. Remarkable. The available photos from the study showing examples of age-matched individuals from the two groups, which I was not able to include here, are visually striking. Stunning, even. The caloric-restricted monkeys looked almost literally half the age of the controls.

Among the most common misconceptions about monkeys and apes, incidentally, is that they are vegan animals. Though they are better adapted to making use of plant foods in some ways than we are, they also readily eat the same things we eat. ALL monkeys and apes are known to eat meat, and many even hunt for meat. The one notable exception is the mountain gorilla, and even they get some insects in their diet. Monkeys and apes are omnivores and, like us, will eat whatever might be available to them in their environment. Some even catch and eat fish! One of the reasons Rhesus monkeys were selected for this particular study, in fact, is because of their pronounced similarity to us, even in terms of diet.

There are actually several more recent studies showing significant health benefit where caloric restriction in humans is concerned. A newly released study in the Journal of Applied Research, “Clinical Experience of a Diet Designed to Reduce Aging” demonstrated that, in the context of an outpatient medical clinic, a diet high in fat (unlimited quantity), adequate in protein (50-80 grams per day), and very low in carbohydrate, with some added multivitamin and mineral supplementation, led to significant improvement in recognized serum factors related to the aging process. Patients were told to eat when they were hungry. The results also included a significant loss of body weight, a significant reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and a reduction in levels of leptin, insulin, fasting glucose, and free T3. Despite the predominance of fat in the diet, serum triglycerides were also greatly reduced.

Of course, it’s easy to restrict overall calories with lab animals, as they have no choice in the matter. It is quite another matter to try and restrict overall caloric intake when you’re driving past fifteen fast food joints on your way home, are surrounded by constant advertisement, and have a refrigerator and cupboards full of food at your ravenous fingertips. Unless, of course, you apply the caloric restriction model in a way that does not leave you hungry--which is exactly what this book tells you how to do. Just follow the simple, most basic dietary guidelines outlined here to eat optimally well while feeling fully satisfied and living healthier, longer--and even save some real money along the way! Even while buying the best-quality grass-fed meats, produce, and wild-caught fish you can find yourself saving considerable money on groceries. The basic guideline to remember is this: greatly restrict or eliminate sugar and starch (preferably eliminating gluten completely), keep your protein intake adequate amounting to approximately 6-7 ounces of organic grass-fed and/or wild-caught meat or seafood total per day, eat as many fibrous “above ground,” nonstarchy vegetables and greens as you like, and eat as much fat (from fattier cuts of meat or fish, nuts, seeds, avocados, coconut, butter/ghee, olives, olive oil, and the like) as you need to satisfy your appetite. The bottom line here is that natural dietary fat is not at all our enemy and that, in the absence of dietary carbohydrate and with adequate protein, it can result in a far more satisfying, longer, and healthier life overall. Simple, delicious, and satisfying. No hunger or feelings of deprivation needed, and all the benefits of supporting a longer and healthier life while saving you money. It’s better for the planet, too.

Finally a book I can unreservedly recommend! I've been very interested in books on diet for a while now, but this one really stood out. It doesn't miss out anything vital nor have anything in it that is so wrong that unreservedly recommending it is difficult. It's so well done and the most complete book on diet I have found so far.

This book is a pretty good summary/amalgamation of many of the very best books on diet I have found, such as Eat Fat, Lose Fat: The Healthy Alternative to Trans Fats by Sally Fallon, Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food by Catherine Shanahan, Real Food: What to Eat and Why by Nina Planck, Know Your Fats : The Complete Primer for Understanding the Nutrition of Fats, Oils and Cholesterol by Mary G. Enig, The Coconut Oil Miracle by Bruce Fife, The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food by Kaayla T. Daniel, The Schwarzbein Principle: The Truth About Losing Weight, Being Healthy, and Feeling Younger by Nancy Deville....

Plus: Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Natasha Campbell-McBride, Traditional Foods Are Your Best Medicine: Improving Health and Longevity with Native Nutrition by Ronald F. Schmid, The Cholesterol Myths: Exposing the Fallacy That Saturated Fat and Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease by Uffe Ravnskov and The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy (Primal Blueprint Series) by Mark Sisson.

What is also wonderful about this book is that it is also a book about health and treating illness. It deals with the topic of health in some depth and does NOT just tell you to eat well and as your ancestors did and everything will be fine. The author acknowledges, as many do not, that while yes following a diet as close to our ancestors as we can get is essential this is not all we need to do to stay healthy and to improve disease states.

In other words, having an optimal diet that suits your genes gets you at least 70% there and is the most important step for health, but there are other areas we need to look at as well. This book explains that we are facing far more assaults on our bodies than our ancestors did due to pollution and chemical exposures and so we need to raise the levels of antioxidants and other nutrients we take in accordingly. Supplements are essential.

We also need to do what we can, whether we have health issues yet or not, to get the chemicals that we couldn't avoid out of our bodies through nutrient supplements and also methods such as FIR sauna use, green drinks, body brushing and so on.

How much vitamin C we need, for example, isn't set in stone from one person to the next, nor even one day to the next. How much we need depends on how many chemicals our body has to detoxify. When our chemical load goes up, so too does our need for all sorts of nutrients and antioxidants, such as vitamin C. There is also significant biochemical individuality between people and some of us need far more of certain substances and nutrients than others.

The fat soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D and E, and also omega 3s from fish oil and fermented cod liver oil are so important, and low-fat diets are to be avoided, but some of us may also need coenzymated B vitamins, sublingual B12, B1 as benfotiamine, carnitine, ALC, RALA, CoQ10, iodine, magnesium and extra vitamin C, this book explains. Assessing whether or not you need betaine HCl, probiotics and digestive enzymes with meals is also key, as you are not what you eat, but what you can actually digest!

As the description of the book says, this book combines, `Your body's Paleolithic needs with modern nutritional and medical research for complete mind-body wellness.'

This book provides information on:

1. The basic principles and foods of the hunter-gatherer diet; meats, eggs (if tolerated), non-starchy vegetables, healthy oils, and small amounts of nuts, seeds and fruits. Avoid processed foods, trans fats and oxidised oils, plus anything you are allergic to, plus sugar and high-carbohydrate foods such as potatoes and fruit juices. A high-fat, moderate protein and green vegetable filled diet is the way to go!

2. Why we are not suited genetically to eat foods such as grains and legumes, and especially not in large amounts, and the many problems these foods can and do cause.

3. Why we are not suited genetically to eat dairy products. (Although the book does recommend fermented and raw dairy products to some extent, for those that can tolerate them.)

4. Why adrenal or thyroid problems cannot be fixed until you deal with your leptin problems, through following a non-high-carbohydrate diet.

5. Which supplements are most important and which we all need to take and why, and how to make sure you buy only good-quality supplements. Some basic information is included on dosages.

6. Why following a low-calorie diet wont extend your lifespan unless the diet helps keep insulin levels low and why supplementing individual hormones which test as low can be problematic.

7. Why there is little point treating a person for a psychological issue if they have significant nutritional deficits and these deficits are best treated first and then other psychologically-based assistance given, if it is still needed.

8. Hunter-gatherers did NOT die young, as is often stated and human health actually deteriorated when agriculture was introduced.

9. Grass-fed/pastured and organic meats and eggs are best, along with home-grown or organic fruits, nuts and vegetables.

10. Those facing serious illness and gut problem are advised to follow the GAPS diet program (which describes a low-fibre easy to digest diet with lots of stocks, unrefined sea salt, meat and vegetable soups, eggs, liver and good oils) and also recipes from Sally Fallon's excellent Nourishing Traditions book.

This book tells us that we need to stop being self indulgent and grow up, and eat what our bodies need for health. Not just what brings us superficial comfort. That isn't an easy thing to do, but that doesn't mean it is not worth striving for. It really is worth getting through those first few fairly awful days of switching over to a fat-burning metabolism (instead of a carb-burning one).

My only criticisms of this book are minor and are that I feel it could have highlighted the benefits of very nutrient rich foods such as bone broths and liver a bit more, been a bit more educated about the history of the beneficial use and complete safety of larger amounts of vitamin C and have at least mentioned the possibility of grounding or earthing as the best way (aside from avoidance) of improving problems caused by EMF radiation - as per the new book on grounding co-authored by Dr Sinatra (Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?).

Because this book does provide such a great summary of all the books listed above, it can also be a bit light-on for theory in some areas and so reading some of the books listed above may also be a good idea for anyone with a real interest in some of these topics - even though this book does in fact contain all the practical information on diet needed. For example, the information on fats is far more detailed in `Know Your Fats' and the book by Gary Taubes contains far more detailed information on why the saturated fat = heart disease hypothesis is wrong and how high insulin levels from high carbohydrate intake cause weight gain. So it just depends how much you want to read and in how much depth.

Having said that, this book also contains lots of information that isn't in any of the other books listed above, which is pretty impressive.

For those who need more information on health, supplements, extensive health testing, detoxification issues and want more specific information on FIR sauna use and how to safely go about it the book Detoxify or Die by Dr Sherry Rogers is essential extra reading. These two books would go very well together, for anyone facing serious illness (as I am). While `Primal Body, Primal Mind' contains all the practical information you need to change your diet, extra information about precautions and expected healing reactions is pretty important if you're seriously ill and about to start any type of detoxification or supplementation program and the aforementioned book by Sherry Rogers provides this.

'Primal Body, Primal Mind' is also surprisingly easy to read, thanks in part to all the short little chapters on each topic, and the author has a great writing style. The book is also very well referenced and the arguments given are convincing, logical and compelling.

I also love that this book completely lacks the self-aggrandising tone (and comments) that some nutrition books have. The author's lack of a huge ego is also seen in the way she so wholeheartedly recommends other great groups, websites and books such as those run by the Weston A. Price Foundation and its members. The author also recommends not taking her word for it and reading as much of her reference material (and other relevant material) as possible. It is so clear that this author's only agenda is genuinely helping people by promoting the most accurate, unbiased and helpful health information.

I'd like to thank the author for writing this book. It is a huge achievement. I hope it is as widely read as it deserves to be, and gets lots of very positive reviews as well.

ps. I have a severe neurological and cardiovascular disease called M.E., but am slowly improving month by month (after more than a decade of slow worsening) through dietary, nutritional and detoxification interventions - as described in books such as this one.

Easily the best $12 I ever spent 2 avril 2012

I'm recommending this book to everyone. I have studied nutrition for 20+ year and have read several diet books trying to unlock the diet "secret". This is my first and only Paleo book. Actually it's NOT Paleo but BEYOND Paleo as the title says. It's NOT another Paleo book. I did peruse the other 2 (Rob Wolf and Mark Sisson) on Amazon and decided on this one. I have already tried the Paleo diet a year ago and got great results. I lost my belly, looked like a competitive bodybuilder and fit into the size of jeans I wore 20 years ago. I wanted to know more about the diet and why, scientifically, was it doing. I wanted a book by more than a diet advocate (I greatly respect the other two authors I mentioned above) but someone who would give me the why so I could really take control of my health. Boy did I get that and then some! Nora's chapters on Carbohydrate Metabolism and Weight Management are golden. So much information about glucose and insulin and why we don't stay lean and healthy on the SAD (Standard American Diet). What the real bonus of the book is the information and insight into longevity she gives. The chapters about Leptin and Insulin give you the information you need to restore your Leptin Sensitivity. Also why hydrogenated oils and Trans fats are to be avoided at all costs, the extreme importance of Omega 3's, Insulin's role is not to reduce blood sugar, how the SAD is driving everyone toward diabetes. She also mentions, and I experienced myself twice, the euphoria you get when you reach the point when you are much stronger than you food cravings. They weaken and it is so much easier to just say no to cupcakes, ice cream, cookies, pizza, pasta, rice, corn chips, etc... These things don't rule you anymore. She likens carbs to feeding a fire with kindling and paper. You will always be feeding the fire to keep it going (You're always hungry). With good fats it's like putting a log on the fire, you drop it and forget about the fire for a long time. And when it's time to eat again you aren't ravenous. A gentle hunger starts to set in and you have time to deal with it. A handful of walnuts can literally sustain you from morning to long after lunch. What a liberating feeling when you are in control of your diet, not the other way around!

I first reviewed this book in 2010, and I have purchased about 30 copies of Nora's book to give away. Now I have read Nora's new book. WOW!!! It's hard to believe something so informative and well done could be even better now. The second edition is AMAZING. My diet is so much better than it was 5 years ago, and I will always be honing my gardening, buying, cooking and eating to maximizing nutrients. It REALLY helps to reread and reinforce ALL the tremendous breadth of topics Nora so deftly covers.

I am retired and about to become a grand-mother for the first time. My daughter guarantees a beautiful nutrient-dense baby.... she's all about delicious food from working at Chez Panisse while she was a student at Cal... so knowing that that deliciousness comes from nutrient dense foods made her love reading Nora's book too. And, I know I will be giving away many, many more Primal Body books... I always have one handy to give to anyone curious about why my family seems so healthy.

Every time a new best-seller comes out, I seem to get sucked in and buy it. Wheat Belly, Fat Chance, Salt Sugar Fat.... they're all good and helpful, but Nora just leaves them in the dust... she covers what they cover in one chapter, then Nora goes on to lay out the big picture. She just so clearly knows stuff they still haven't figured out. What a beautiful mind you have Nora... truly brilliant.

This book is off the charts, I'd give it 10 stars if I could. I only just got Primal Body a few weeks ago and have barely started to implement some changes here and there in my already fairly excellent diet. Still, I am already sleeping better, feeling far fewer fluctuations from normal in the digestive, circulatory and nervous systems. My skin is smoother, too. And, I know, without a doubt, the guidance and resources provided by Nora's book will extend my life and provide for a much higher quality of life as well. When I got to page 88 I quit reading and ordered a case of books, one for each family member and various best friends and neighbors.

I'm a health nut from way back, always telling my friends the latest about Omega-3's, the horrors of trans-fats, the crucial need for Vitamin D and more. I learned most of it first from my sister, I admit, but I found Barry Sears by myself. My sis actually has a 1938 publication by Weston Price, and first got going with Adele Davis. I've read countless books, magazine articles, newsletters, and manuals trying to understand what's what. I'd trade all I've ever read about diet, nutrition, and health food for this book. This is a reference book that I will be leaning on for years to come.

Nora has the most delightful personality, her writing reflects it wonderfully. Her narrative is funny, engaging, and easy to read even when she is talking about some fairly complicated bio-chemical situations. She makes complex and confusing things understandable. Yes, sometimes I did have to read some sections a couple of times to get it, but making extremely complex things clear is one of Nora's great gifts.

I am a sixty-one year old mom who has read enough about nutrition to know that Nora did an astonishing amount of reading, analyzing, and synthesizing to sift the truth from the incomplete, false, intentionally misleading, and otherwise wrong information. There are so many references in the back of the book, it makes my head hurt. The richness of advice here is utterly mind-boggling. She CLEARLY understands the big picture.

We need nutrient rich foods to sustain us in these stressful times. If we want to give our children and grand-children optimum potential we need to pay attention. We who are of retirement age do not want to be dealing with cancer, memory loss, heart disease, immobility, or any of the other myriad of syndromes that nutrition can either eliminate or mediate.

Young or old, I honestly don't think there is a better book to use as your guide to maintaining your physical or mental health.

I even love the book's cover; I am always in awe of beautiful art that is thousands of years old!

Nora's great gift is to synthesize information as a generalist while having tremendous in-depth understanding of so many specialties. She has walked the walk. Her website is absolutely terrific too.

Amazon readers are always told "If you liked this book, you will like _______" I didn't think it was possible to have another book out there as good as this one, but Catherine and Luke Shanahan (she's an MD) wrote one: Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food. These two books are joined at the hip. They fit together perfectly with minimal duplication. They both give jaw-dropping insights into who we are bio-chemically, and what we can do to survive in a world where profits drive food production and medical care.

If you don't have heath care (I mean "sick care"), BUY these books. You'll be fine, unless lightening strikes.

The best money you will ever spend on your health (or on any two books) is the money you will spend when you right this minute order both these books. You will not regret it and you will be wondering why no one else has told you about them. (They are new books, and you are the trail-blazers on this.) I have already thanked my friend Phyllis four times for telling me about them, and I've only owned them for three weeks.

Primal Body-Primal Mind is a fabulous compilation of FACTS not fads about the nutritional needs of the human body. By reading this book you will understand how our culture has gotten away from eating the foods we were meant to eat and learn what your body truly needs to not only exist, but to thrive. If you find yourself getting lost in the fodder the general media spews about food and nutrition, come back to Nora's book for a clear understanding about the physiology of the body and its nutritional needs. You can't help but wrap your mind around the information in this book and feel an intuitive desire to follow the words put forth. It is an inspiration. I keep Nora's book on the surface to lend to friends and clients when answers are needed about the fundamentals of proper nutrition. Check out her website for delicious recipes and more information.

For the past 9 months I have been eating in accordance with the information found in this book. I went in with low expectations. But wow...the change in my health has been nothing short of miraculous. My energy levels are noticeably up. I feel calmer and more at peace (the Primal Mind part?), grounded in my body, stronger and more resilient. Not a bad turn around for a 56 y.o. couch potato!

When I was eating starches and grains, I had a reputation as a bottomless pit. I would joke that "I have a broken full switch". At the dinner table I would scan for who might not clean their plate and monitor the serving platter, waiting for the opportunity to pounce. Soon after switching to this nutritionally dense food, I had, for the first time, this alien experience of feeling SATISFIED! It was an odd experience to get a signal from somewhere in my body that I was through eating. It has stayed with me ever since. I no longer over eat, am not hungry between meals and rarely "snack". I can even easily skip meals and not miss them. I feel truly, thoroughly, nourished. Before being educated by this book, I weighed 202 lbs. After 6 months I weighed 166 and have remained there ever since... with no increase in exercise (no brag, just fact).

Grass fed pastured food is not that hard to find. Does take some snooping on the web and asking around (I've sure met and networked with some wonderful, helpful people this way). Web search for "grass fed" and "grass fed beef", "raw milk", "pastured pork", "pastured eggs", "pastured poultry". Check out books by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig and the Weston Price Foundation.

It is NOT more expensive to eat this way and I get far greater value for my money. I eat far less and give no money to doctors! Check out the book 'Primal Tightwad: Maximizing Your Health on a Minimal Budget' by Carolyn Rush.

I originally found the thought of removing all the high starch and processed foods from my diet very daunting, but Nora's arguments for doing so were solid enough to get me to try it. After starting, eating this way became easy, enjoyable and self encouraging. That makes it not like a "DIET" at all. It's completely changed my cravings, appetite and what I consider real food.

Although some of the information is technical and sometimes complex, Nora's writing style makes it fun and easier to understand. There is some redundancy, but that served to help me remember important points. My overall food consumption is way down, my health has improved substantially, and I don't consume meat from environmentally damaging and unhealthy sources. Thank you Nora. Your book is a win win win!
