Descriptions du produit

In early 2003, a young writer/director contacted Explosions In The Sky requesting permission to use one of their songs in his second film, All the Real Girls. The filmmaker was Texas native David Gordon Green, and their music was a perfect companion to the elegiac score from fellow Texas composer, David Wingo. That would be the first-ever film license for Explosions In The Sky. Fast-forward a decade: the band's music has become an integral part of countless film and television programs (most notably Friday Night Lights and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly); Green is an internationally renowned, impressively eclectic filmmaker (Pineapple Express, Snow Angels); and Wingo is a highly acclaimed film composer (Mud, Take Shelter) and leader of acclaimed indie-rock group, Ola Podrida. They've all become very close friends, and that tight-knit friendship spawned Green's stirring new film, Prince Avalanche. While watching the Super Bowl together, EITS drummer Chris Hrasky casually suggested that Green use the scorched landscape of Bastrop State Park in Bastrop, TX as the backdrop for a film. Green took the suggestion and ran with it, remaking the Icelandic indie comedy Either Way into an understated dramatic comedy starring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch. In keeping with the low-key, under-the-Hollywood-radar nature of the film, Green tapped Explosions In The Sky and David Wingo to score the film. In the spirit of the filmmaking process, the soundtrack to Prince Avalanche is a casual affair, an earnest collaboration amongst friends recorded entirely in the living rooms of its composers. Much like the film, the soundtrack stitches dozens of tiny moments of heartfelt brilliance into an emotionally resonant whole far more expansive than its intimate roots might imply. Explosions In The Sky excel at making even the most mundane moments in everyday life seem downright revelatory. David Wingo and David Gordon Green have made careers out of pulling off similar feats in film. It was only a matter of time before these guys all collaborated, and Prince Avalanche delivers on the inspired expectations of such a union.

Great Score, Good Album from Explosions in the Sky 29 août 2013
Par T. A. Daniel - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
David Gordon Green is one of the strangest filmmakers out there. The man who was once hailed as the heir-apparent to Terrence Malick (through his early work, All The Real Girls and George Washington) started making breezy stoner comedies like Pineapple Express, The Sitter, and Your Highness. His most recent film, Prince Avalanche, looks to strike a balance between the two worlds: an existential film wearing the clothes of a half-baked comedy. Green has used David Wingo as his go-to composer for all but a handful of movies, so it's not so much a surprise that he's returning to compose Prince Avalanche. What is a surprise is that Wingo is doing it with the Texas post-rock group Explosions in the Sky.

Explosions in the Sky are no stranger to having their music used for scoring purposes. Critically acclaimed television show Friday Night Lights used the band's music heavily and to great effect. Because the instrumental band is pretty good at creating beautiful, sweeping arrangements, their work ends up in a lot of films and commercials. The band's last album, Take Care, Take Care, Take Care was released in 2011, so 2013's Prince Avalanche feels like a bit of a stop-gap. Fans looking for a true Explosions in the Sky record will probably be disappointed by the mostly quiet subdued soundtrack. This isn't an outright LP, it's a collaboration.

As a collaboration between Explosions in the Sky and David Wingo, it's often very difficult to tell where one artist ends and the other begins on this soundtrack. The hallmarks of the band, long songs with plenty of dynamics and movements, are mostly removed from Prince Avalanche. The bulk of the music here barely makes it over the 2-minute mark. Most of the music here feels like tiny mood-pieces -- these shorter bites aren't bad though, and each snippet creates a feeling of loneliness, melancholy, and isolation. The songs that do receive extended time, "Alone Time", "Hello, This is Your House", and "Join Me On My Avalanche" are by far the best on the soundtrack. These tracks allow Explosions in the Sky enough time and room to do what they do best.

"Join Me On My Avalanche" is probably the standout track here. The song is essentially a three-and-a-half minute build-up, with guitars, horns, vocals, and electronics. It's not over the top, and it doesn't feel like Wingo or Explosions in the Sky are going through the motions either. At its best, Prince Avalanche has the ability to create an emotional landscape for your mind to wander in. But unlike previous Explosions in the Sky records, this soundtrack won't send chills down your spine, and it won't make you feel much. It's pretty clear that the soundtrack was meant to supplement something, and as such the music never truly feels complete, save for some of the longer tracks. This soundtrack works better than the score Daft Punk did for Tron: Legacy or M83 for Oblivion. It works better because Explosions in the Sky has seemingly been creating scores this entire time for movies that don't exist yet. Prince Avalanche is a good, cohesive record, but it doesn't carry the emotional heft or impact as other Explosions in the Sky records.

isn't going to be like your usual really amazing Explosions in the Sky albums of strong amplified electric guitar, some synthesizers, and the standard climatic elements that make their music so incredible. Rather, with this CD there is more of a ruralistic feel/sound to it like someone is doing a jig on a farm, just having a great time, without a care in the world or maybe it is more like they are driving throughout the countryside on a beautiful afternoon in their convertible and just realizing how beautiful life really is. It is a pretty happy-go-lucky kind of album. It seemingly uses new kinds of instruments, like percussion instruments and even the piano in order to create a new and authentic sound that is reflective of the experiences and emotions one feels while in the places shown in the film. It's essentially very nature-based. Anyways, I hope my review was okay but I was basically describing how I personally feel when I get to listen to this great album in my car. It's very mellow and calming unlike some of Explosions in the Sky's earlier albums even though those are also equally great if not greater.

If you've seen Prince Avalanche (great film!) then you probably haven't been able to get the amazing score out of your head. The music is simply beautiful and a character within the film itself. The album is worth purchasing alone for the track "Climb Up On My Avalanche".

Another great addition to an impressive body of work by Explosions in the Sky. Although the sound is not your typical "explosions" sound but this is precisely why I love it so much. Instead of repeating themselves they created a beautiful sound landscape for an indie film.

I love EITS, but this soundtrack is just not them, in my opinion. its really different. besides that, at least it brought some cool little extra things with the album.
