Présentation de l'éditeur

From award-winning quilter, garment designer and teacher Jen Swearington, comes an essential and accessible guide to printing by hand on fabric. She starts by explaining how to translate design ideas into prints, from single motifs to repeating patterns. Jen then goes on to cover various methods of transfer: stencils, photo emulsion, dye baths, bleach resists and more. With plenty of tried-and-true recipes and a dozen teaching projects that range from garments to home décor, this beautiful book is the perfect resource for sewers, quilters and other fabric crafters!

title is deceptive 26 août 2013

The title of this book should be "Silk Screen Printing on Fabric," to make it perfectly clear that all techniques in this book use screen printing. The author details a number of techniques for silk screening on fabric and there are projects in the back that involve many silk screen techniques and sewing (be forewarned).
It is not a beginners' book on silk screening. The directions are not good enough and there aren't enough step-by-step pictures. For instance, in her "Ready, Set, Print" chapter the author says "Congratulations on pulling your first print!" I wanted to see a picture of that finished first print but there is none. Frustrating!!!
Look carefully before you buy!

Beautiful projects! 9 avril 2013

I like to get inexpensive t-shirts form the thrift store and experiment with different techniques on them, so I was excited to see Printing on Fabric since I'm always open to new ideas. Several methods of transferring your pattern to the fabric are explained in detail, including dyes, bleach and more, but I was most comfortable with the stencil method since I have tried that before. The author explains about using screens for printing and also has good tips about layout of the design.

The most exciting part of the book for me was seeing the amazing projects! A rainbow of ideas is included, from scarves, pillows, curtains and other fabric based objects which are transformed into a whole new piece. My favorite item was the Night and Day Quilt, with it's stunning hand dyed silk and bamboo jersey printed fabrics pieced together to a beautiful effect. I can't wait to try out more of these techniques and hope to achieve some of results i saw in Printing on Fabric.

Using stencils, screen printing 15 juin 2013

I was really excited when I received "Printing on FabriC" by Jen Swearington. I do dyeing and surface design for a part-time job and I am always looking for new ideas for my projects. Printing on Fabric does a really good job at describing the products that they use on their projects, and I found a few of them that I'd like to try in my business. Swearington uses mostly dyes and inks, but I really liked her instructions on lining up stencils to make larger, continuous patterns on fabrics, and how to design repeat patterns.
This book is not for the very beginner, but after learning about some of the supplies, it is very appropriate. I consider myself almost an intermediate surface designer, and I still found some very good inspirations.

A thorough, well-thought-out guide to printing fabric. Easy to follow instructions, unique hand-drawn illustrations, simple methods that anyone can do at home without a lot of expensive equipment. But this book if you want to learn how to print on fabric.
