A great book, terrific resource, but not for the novice 26 août 2011

Everything that makes "ProTools 9: Music Production"Pro Tools 9: Music Production, Recording, Editing, and Mixing so wonderful seems to be missing in this book. That is not a bad thing, but understand that if you are a novice or even a mid-level user who only occasionally dabbles with PT, this is going to be missing where you itch. If you are sold on the PT way of doing things and your are an active learner, you are going to LOVE this excellent book.

What is to love?

Best of all, this book will give you dozens of Pro Tools 9 shortcuts and tips; it will give you neat tricks that can be applied to projects. It is hard to overstate the usefulness, so long as you follow WHY this feature is important.

I also loved the interactive website ... this made this book understandable to me. It includes hi-def video tutorials which bring this book to life. You get to see and hear from professionals in the field (not just the authors) as you mix right alongside these Pro Tools engineers. Of course, the book is wonderful in itself, as it demonstrates how the authors (two professional) go about their daily workflow for making an outstanding rock music mix. While I agree with one reviewer that states that mixing tends to go too far and takes out the heart and soul of much of today's music, the purpose of this book is to show you HOW...not to make you "correct" every drum beat and slow build. But still, it is good to know how.

The best of the best?
Many, many illustrations detailing each step in a modern mix. These include:
Buss Mixing and Parallel Compression
How to get perfectly tight rhythm tracks
How to use delay and vocal automation for clarity and punch
Skills and procedures for mastering (and pre-mastering) the Final Mix

The only drawback? This is not novice friendly. As long as you don't need hand-holding, this would be an outstanding buy. And if you like a more descriptive approach, do check out the online tutorials.

Excellent Learning Tool for Professionals and Amateurs 4 octobre 2011
Par Dave Hiser - Publié sur Amazon.com

The beauty of this book is in the simplicity of the idea. Very few people have studios with thousands and thousands of dollars in equipment. We have home studios with a couple of Shure mics and maybe a decent condenser microphone. And we record in whatever part of our home is available at the time. So Kevin has taken an actual band, recorded them essentially in a garage using everyday Shure SM57 (about $100 each) and equivalent microphones and then wrote this book to show you what is involved in every step to getting a professional sounding radio ready recording. And the best part is you can download the actual studio session files and follow along in the book every step of the way.

This is definitely not a beginners ProTools 101 book. You have to have a basic understanding of how to open a session, import tracks, and use the basic tools within ProTools. There are other books, websites, YouTube videos etc on the basic 101 stuff. But if you are ready to take the next step and want to learn how the pro's edit drums, guitars and vocals or if you want a better understanding of overall mixing, timing fixes, premastering and final mixing then this is the book for you.

Every section shows you short cuts in both Mac and PC formats to speed up your mixes also along with dozens of new ProTools 9 tips and tricks. And even though this book is essentially written for ProTools, people with other DAW's can also learn and apply many of the tips that he gives for making a radio ready production.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to take their home recordings to the next level.

Advanced step-by-step tutorial by illustrated examples 2 septembre 2011
Par Eugene Tenenbaum - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Commentaire client Vine pour produit gratuit ( De quoi s'agit-il? )
The ISBN 0240818709 (Mixer's Toolkit) is a short and narrowly tailored tutorial for advanced users. It teaches by example, but not the basics, and is full of practical tips, shortcuts, and methods. Additionally, the Web site includes interactive video tutorials at 1440x822 with easy to follow instructions that clarify the content and allow to practice alongside the featured professionals. Novices may need to read first Pro Tools 101: Official Courseware. It shares similarities with the industry standard "Inside AutoCAD", but it is by far less extensive and teaches only the selected features of the package, though still sufficient and quite understandable for those familiar with the basics. The philosophy of spreading the subject over several books allows to charge more for the set in comparison to having it in just one volume.

Pro Tools is a digital audio software for recording and editing in music production, film scoring, film, and television post production. This book is a step-by-step tutorial teaching only the modern mix aspect of Pro Tools. The explanations are synonymous and logical, but scant. Almost all tutorial pages contain from one to several illustrations - mostly program screen snapshots. The book can also serve as a reference on the subject.

Approx. 104 pages of the book are shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function in addition to a 43-page bonus chapter from a different book titled Logic Pro 9: Audio and Music Production. What cannot be seen is that the book is well printed on good paper, and the soft covers are strong.
Here it is..... A Pro Tools Book With a Lot of Heart and Soul 19 juillet 2011

I received this book as part of the Amazon Vine Program.

I am a Pro Tools student, and Musician (Pianist) and currently in School to become an Audio Engineer and Operator. I want to read EVERY book on ProTools. Why? Because it is hard. And intense. There is a lot to learn. You cannot, simply cannot learn Pro Tools overnight. I have found that to really learn Pro Tools you must absolutely IMMERSE yourself. So when I got this book I was expecting a typical dry and boring instructional manual... But NO!!! This book I will definitely keep in my library and refer to often.

Here is what I got from this book:

1) This is NOT A BOOK FOR BEGINNERS in ProTools. But, if you are a newbie, don't worry. While the book is not written to a beginner, their website (mixcoach.com) provides additional support as well. You will need prior instruction on the basic tools in Pro Tools such as: the ability to launch sessions, operate the transport (play, fast forward, rewind etc.) and even use the various modes and basic tools of pro Tools. But after you get that knowledge, come back and read this book. Why? Because its good.

2) It is written in a fun, playful and informative manner. It is not your traditional dry and boring instruction manual. These guys focus on fun AND informative.

3) You can get a free one month membership to their website. Check out the website first to get their vibe. They have a lot of podcasts and really want you to learn ProTools.

4) The book is designed to take you through an entire session which you can download on their website. Pretty coool. These guys WANT you to learn.

5) Drum Mixing is hard. These guys make it look easy. Not easy to do.

These guys are there for you. Both in the book and on their website. If you are enthusiastic about learning Pro Tools, this book should be in your library!!
Great Book! 25 mai 2011

So, this book is the best invention since the microwave... well, not quite, but if you're looking for an easy to understand way to get better at ProTools 9 without digging through a technical manual, this is the book for you.

The layout of the book gives you an opportunity to work on a real mix that can be downloaded from the web. And, I know what you're thinking, "that's great, more doctored up tracks that are already crystal clear and perfect."

Not the case with these tracks. They were actually recorded in a garage and you have the opportunity to make them sound like they were recorded in the best studio in the world.

I personally learned many keyboard shortcuts and real-world decision making tips that help to be efficient and critical at the same time.

The other thing that I really like about this book is that it is fairly basic in it's instruction, but it is not written for beginners. The authors assume that you already know the basics of the ProTools workflow. So, as a plus, this book is written for people who are just above the novice level.

That being said, everyone from novices to experts can learn fresh concepts that can do nothing but encourage creativity.

The only reasons I give it four stars are that I wish the book would have included a little more information... maybe some sections on MIDI and popular plugins.
(This is only a minor "issue" in light of how helpful this book can be.) The other reason is that I'm a technical person and wish the book would have had more of the technical information, hard to explain, but those with technical minds know what I mean--hopefully.

Good book overall and the illustrations are great!

God Bless!
