This book answers a lot of advanced WCF questions and has really good explanation on SOA. It is heavy on WCF and light on SOA side.
It's an easy to read book and is a great resource for WCF developers and architects.
Is this one of the best WCF/SOA books that I've ever read? Probably not... but I don't regret I read it :)

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Nice reference - but not for SOA beginners 31 mai 2011

I usually find the Apress Pro series very informative and well worth the money. However, this book is special. Although the book gives a brief introduction to SOA, this book won't teach you the principles of Service Orientation. Therefore, you should already know, why you want to use SOA in the first place and how you design good services. The book will help you in implementing those services with Microsofts WCF technology. It has lot's of advice on configuration and options. Sometimes it's a little repetitive. Especially, the changes of WCF 4 seem to be included as an afterthought. Lately, I found that many services are designed based on REST principles. This is supported in WCF 4 and the author briefly mentions this in the "What's new" chapter. However, I think this topic is important enough to warrant a larger section of the book.

So for me, it's a mixed bag. I already have a good understanding of services and WCF. Therefore, I use the book as a reference to many aspects of WCF 4. This works well. However it would recommend the book only to a seasoned developer as many introductory aspects are missing.

I give 5 stars to this book because of the depth of the topics it took about and the way it handled them.
I covers a great area of WCF some by detailed clear examples and some by only mentioning they existed and enable you to seek further details.

There's reasonable coverage of some of the newer features, working with Windows Azure, etc. Some items are dated, like coverage of interop with Axis, etc.

If you are new to C#, Visual Studio, web services, or any of the other technologies that come together under the umbrella of WCF, then this is *not* the book for you. While the grammar and writing style are quite clear (this is unusual any more for tech books), there are so many assumptions made regarding prior knowledge that this book serves only as an overview for the uninitiated. About 50% of the material is over my head and I cannot grasp it because no background information is presented. There are plenty of code examples, but no mention of what selections to make in Visual Studio to create the proper classes/objects to type in the sample code.

There is quite a bit of redundancy in the text. I can understand restating things once or twice to drive home a point, but the repetitiveness soon becomes quite boring.

If you are well versed in Visual Studio and have previously programmed web services using C#, then you will likely find this a handy reference. Otherwise, stay away from this book.
