The 'problem of consciousness' is widely seen as an intractable mystery - the biggest challenge humanity faces as it seeks to gain a 'complete' understanding of both itself and the non-human world. But what exactly is consciousness? The aim of this book is to help to initiate a change of perspective and to thereby dissolve the seeming intractability of the 'problem of consciousness'.
The author reviews the contemporary framing of the 'problem of consciousness' and contends that the problem is widely seen to be a very special one because of the nature of this framing; the 'problem of consciousness' is a special problem because it is seen as the 'problem of what-it-is-likeness'. By teasing apart the 'problem of consciousness' into two separate problems - the 'problem of what-it-is-likeness' and the 'problem of awareness' - an alternative conceptualisation is reached which demystifies the 'problem of consciousness'.
