Présentation de l'éditeur

Surprise, shock, and a shift in her comfortable life tumble into Katherine Price’s world when least expected. The future she has imagined suddenly vanishes, leaving little to focus upon beyond her career and the caregiving her elderly widowed mother might require.

Fate has other plans.

June in Provence is full of promise when Katherine arrives from Canada, eager to feel renewed by her surroundings. Endless rows of lavender prepare to burst into pink and purple blooms. Fields of sunflowers flow in golden waves among vineyards and olive groves. Ancient hilltop villages beckon. It’s the postcard setting she envisioned, but is that all she needs?

After a year of heartbreak, Katherine has impulsively agreed to a home exchange in the south of France. Colorful locals, a yellow lab named Picasso, and the inspiring beauty of the countryside breathe new life into her days.

Seeking to shed the pain of betrayal and loss, she struggles to recapture her joie de vivre and searches for the answer to a haunting question: is it too late to begin again?

As Katherine explores the romantic cobblestone lanes of medieval towns, discovers the intoxicating pleasures of Paris and savors the sun-kissed Côte d'Azur, she begins redefining the possibilities in her life.

An enduring story of hope and change in life’s later years is woven through the author’s love-letter to France. Like a well-travelled friend, Patricia Sands invites readers into a world she loves and entices them to linger.

"Be prepared to fall in love with Provence! This is a story that will draw you in with its vibrancy in setting and characters. A must read for any woman with a desire for romance and travel." Steena Holmes, author of Amazon bestseller Finding Emma

En savoir plus sur l'auteur

Family, writing and travel are my passions ... okay, and chocolate ... and I'm seldom without a camera. Toronto, Canada is home for me most of the time, Florida some of the time, and the south of France whenever possible. There are benefits to getting older!

Beginning with my first Kodak Brownie camera at the age of six, it seems I have told stories all of my life through photography. With our happily blended family of seven adult children and, at last count, six grandchildren, life is full and time is short.

Becoming an author in my ... gasp ... 60's ... (I'm too young to be this old!) was not on my agenda. But here I certainly am and writing is what I will continue to do. My debut novel, The Bridge Club, was published through iUniverse in August 2010 and my second novel, The Promise Of Provence, was released in April, 2013. Readers are asking when the next book will be out so I'm back at the drawing board!

My stories celebrate the rewarding friendships and bonds women share and examine the challenges life often throws in our paths.

One of the great pleasures of being published is being asked to speak with women's groups on the subjects of writing and self-publishing as well as the importance of valuing our personal stories. At other events (as one half of Sommers & Sands) along with my speaking partner, author Susan Sommers, through keynotes, workshops and conferences, audiences are encouraged to embrace change and see challenges as opportunities.

I live by the philosophy that it's never too late to begin something new, to seize each day and be a possibilitarian! As the saying goes, just do it!

C'est magnifique!! The Promise of Provence stole my heart… Katherine was such a wonderfully human and understandable character. I related to her immediately and through her story that unfolded within the pages of The Promise of Provence I was reminded of so many important lessons learned in my own life.

As I read The Promise of Provence I was reminded of Eat, Pray, Love. Let me admit first that I have yet to read Eat, Pray, Love (though I own it and intend to do so). I have only caught the film adaptation during a transatlantic flight. That being said I am not making any comparison of the authors or the novels, but just the essence of the story… to live life as if each day is your last, to savor the present and relish the moment. I remember when I saw the film of Eat, Pray, Love it was just that which stuck with me and I appreciated the film simply as a reminder that just when you feel you have reached the end of the book of your life you realize that the best chapter has yet to be written, to live in hope. It is such an important mantra to remember and one that is so easily forgotten.

I enjoyed every page of Patricia Sands’ The Promise of Provence for its rich detail of the landscape, architecture, history and especially the food of the Provence region of France. If you have ever visited or wish to visit this magical spot Sands manages to truly capture the essence of Provence in this novel. I will warn you also that reading The Promise of Provence will make you crave brie with baguette so please do yourself a favor and have these on hand before beginning the novel. Oh, and a bottle of your favorite French wine as well certainly wouldn’t hurt!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Travelogue or romance? 17 décembre 2013

I persisted with this but wondered all the while why I was finding it such hard work. It has all the ingrédients for a good read: a life-changing drama to start with, wonderful settings in Canada and Provence, an eclectic mix of characters, efficient editing, good grammar.
I think it was the stilted style which did not appeal. Trying to intermingle a romance with a travelogue just did not work for me.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A Journey to Provence 13 mai 2013
Par Paulita - Publié sur Amazon.com

I can't promise this novel with satisfy your longing for France. In fact, I'd have to say that it made mine worse. The Promise of Provence by Patricia Sands is strongest when it takes the reader throughout Provence -- the cliff villages, the coastal towns, the vineyards. It definitely made me yearn to return.
The novel begins in Toronto with Katherine's 22nd wedding anniversary. She arrives home to learn her husband has left her for another woman. Katherine's journey through pain and loss isn't over though. Some might call this novel a romance, but I prefer to think of it as a novel about a woman's independence.
Katherine decides to exchange homes with a couple in Provence. That's where the travel really begins, and the romance sparks as she puts her past life behind her.
The culture of France, the realization that every minute of life should be seized and lived to the fullest, spark hope in Katherine.
Here's a quote from her time in the market:
"Adding three jars of lavender honey to her basket, her next stop was the herb seller, whose long table blazed with vivid color and filled the air with a bouquet of fragrantly pungent smells that was almost hallucinogenic. Here she chose three mixtures prepared by the woman whose flamboyant makeup and dresses were as colorful as her wares. One packet was for preparing fish dishes, another for Mediterranean salads, and the last for lamb.
As she lingered, she was reminded of the word "la garrique," which Joy had used to describe the combination of earthy, herbal, floral, and other scents found in the Provencal markets. It was unique and something she felt she would not forget.
Her last stop was the soap vendor. Again, the vibrant and fragrant display of the famous savon de Marseille, oils and creams, caressed her senses."
The novel shows how Katherine heals from her marriage and other troubles as she grows more confident.
I'd recommend this book if you love travel. I also like the fact that the main character becomes a stronger woman than she anticipates.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Makes you feel like you are there! 10 octobre 2013

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though I thought I was getting a typical change your life travel book there was quite a bit more to this story. In fact, more than a quarter of the book goes by before Katherine begins the travel part, which gave the story more depth. Once in Provence, well, for the arm chair traveler you feel like you are actually there taking in the sights and scents of southern France. The flowers, the vineyards, the castles, the wines, the cheeses, the hills, the beaches, the marketplaces, they are all beautifully and vividly described. I also liked the way the author portrayed Katherine realistically growing from feeling lonely and out of place to the newfound joy that takes her over as she begins to fit in, make friends and develops a love affair with Provence. While there is romance in the book, the main romance is the one that Katherine begins with Provence. The feeling is contagious and after reading this book I want to visit France even more!

I am an avid traveller and most enjoy reading books that take me on a journey to discover far off places. The Promise of Provence did just that. It took me back to one of my favourite places, Provence France. Patricia's story about Kate's journey kept me interested and wanting more. I looked forward to picking up the book every chance I could get and enjoyed losing myself in the pages and Kate's story. There were many great references to wonderful towns, markets, stores and more. It made me want to go back to Provence to search out the places she wrote about. Excellent book. I sure hope there's a sequel.

This is a enchanting story about Provence and it reminds me so much of my visits through France visiting the country, the vineyards, wineries, restaurants, Cannes, Eze, etc., all the places I had the wonderful opportunity to visit and stay including Switzerland and Italy. All the history is so alluring and true that one cannot help but enjoy reading about the history and romance. It is so true, and the food tastes every bit as delicious as described. I look forward to the sequel.
