HASH(0x916c90d8) étoiles sur 5 Great ideas, terrible production 8 février 2003
Par N. Jacobs - Publié sur
Format: CD
Revenant was truely one of a kind. They combined the layered guitars and strange time signatures of prog rock bands like Rush and Yes with a full on metal assault which sometimes leaned towards Morbid Angel, sometimes more thrash oriented. Revenant's three greatest things were their drumming, their lyrics, and their weird time signatures/picking styles. The drumming is especially powerful; Will Cocoran tackles all the weird tempo shifts with ease, add in the necessary fills as needed. Revenant's lyrics are very cryptic; imagine if Lovecraft were to be alive now, and after reading some Nietzsche decided to pen lyrics to a death metal album. That's what you get here! They never touch a theme directly, leaving it open to your interpretation. Hank Veggian delivers each line in a sort of raspy whisper, something you probably won't hear on any other album. This particular vocal approach takes some getting used to, in the same way that King Diamond and Mercyful Fate made me scratch my head the first time I heard them. The time changes are another interesting aspect of Revenant; each song consists of lots of riffs. Sure, there are some choruses, but its like a reference point that your mind returns to just to let you know you're still listening to the same song.
The problem here is the production, and I do have to take a star off for that. I was shocked to learn that the title-track has four different guitar tracks, all doing something different, only to be practically wiped out on the final mix. There is hardly any bass on here, either, leaving the whole album feeling drier than the Sahara desert. The song arrangements are usually very long, and the dryness kind of kills your attention span on the first few listens. Its similar to Invocator's first album, "Excursion Demise"--lots of ideas flying around, but difficult to differentiate them all. Thankfully, the drumming and some twists with the guitar work keep the intrigue high, which is something I can't say for "Excursion Demise," which was basically all skank beats.
This is their only full length album they ever relasesed, but they do have a new EP available through the band that blows this album completely away. "Prophecies of a Dying World" is an album that demands repeated listens to get the full effect. Revenant were, and are, an underground legend that demand more respect and attention!

This is the only album by this underground band. They played death/thrash with an incredible musicianship, very good guitar riffs and excelent solos. The vocals are great too. Their style is symilar to Morbid Angel's "Altars of Madness" era. Recommended!!!
