A special note from Amazon.co.uk, November 15 2004

As some readers may be aware, a hoax e-mail has been circulating widely on the internet that falsely claims Amazon has favorably reviewed this book. This allegation is, of course, absolutely untrue. Nevertheless, this rumor has become so widespread on the Internet that it's already a recognized "urban legend," just like alligators living in the sewers. Amazon.co.uk obviously does not endorse The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. This book is one of the most infamous, and tragically influential, examples of racist propaganda ever written. It may be useful to some as a tool in the teaching of the history of anti-Semitism, but it's unquestionably propaganda.

Does Amazon.co.uk sell this book? Of course we do, along with millions of other titles. You can also find books in Amazon.co.uk's online bookstore that analyze The Protocols' fraudulent origins and its tragic historical role in promoting anti-Semitism and Jewish persecution, including A Lie and a Libel: History of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Should Amazon.co.uk sell The Protocols and other controversial works? As a bookseller, Amazon.co.uk strongly believes that people have the right to choose their own reading material. Our goal is to support freedom of expression and to provide customers with the broadest selection possible so they can find, discover, and buy any title they might be seeking. That selection includes some titles which many people, including many employees of Amazon.co.uk, may find distasteful or otherwise objectionable. However, Amazon.co.uk believes it is censorship to make a book unavailable to our customers because we believe its message to be repugnant.

Furthermore, because we strongly believe that the appropriate response to repugnant speech is not censorship, but more speech, we will continue to allow readers, authors, and publishers to express their views about the books and other products we offer on our Web site.

We hope we have eliminated any confusion surrounding this book. If you happened to be one of the many who received the infamous e-mail, we would appreciate it if you would pass this along to your friends. It is very hurtful to everyone at Amazon to be accused of racism.

Thank you for your consideration.

Amazon.com, April 6, 2000 Review

Although it's a pernicious fraud, The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion has unfortunately had a widespread influence--all of it evil--on the history of the 20th century. It was exposed as a hoax in 1921, yet it has been used as a justification for the Holocaust and for innumerable pogroms in Russia and the Soviet Union.

The Protocols was supposedly written in 1897 from the minutes of 24 secret meetings between Jews and Freemasons in which they conspired to bring down Western civilization and jointly rule the world. In reality, it is nothing of the sort. In 1921, Philip Graves of the London Times revealed The Protocols to be a fraud, showing it to be based on a French satire aimed at Napoleon III. In a series of side-by-side extracts printed in the Times, Graves demonstrated that the forgers took long portions of the original text, titled Dialogues in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, and simply replaced "France" with "Zion" and "The Emperor" with "We the Jews." Further investigations by the Russian historian Vladimir Burtsev revealed other sources for The Protocols, including a fantasy novel by Hermann Goedsche and, more darkly, the hand of the Russian secret police.

Sadly, despite its clearly fraudulent nature, The Protocols continues today to feed the fears of the credulous and to fan the flames of fanaticism and hate. --Perry M. Atterberry

A special note from Amazon.com

As some readers may be aware, a hoax e-mail has been circulating widely that falsely claims Amazon.com has favorably reviewed this book. This allegation is, of course, absolutely untrue. Nevertheless, this rumor has become so widespread on the Internet that it's already a recognized "urban legend," just like alligators living in the sewers. Amazon.com obviously does not endorse The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. This book is one of the most infamous, and tragically influential, examples of racist propaganda ever written. It may be useful to some as a tool in the teaching of the history of anti-Semitism, but it's unquestionably propaganda.

Does Amazon.com sell this book? Of course we do, along with millions of other titles. The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion is classified under "controversial knowledge" in our store, along with books about UFOs, demonic possession, and all manner of conspiracy theories. You can also find books in other sections of Amazon.com's online bookstore that analyze The Protocols' fraudulent origins and its tragic historical role in promoting anti-Semitism and Jewish persecution, including A Lie and a Libel: The History of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Should Amazon.com sell The Protocols and other controversial works? As a bookseller, Amazon.com strongly believes that providing open access to written speech, no matter how hateful or ugly, is one of the most important things we do. It's a service that the United States Constitution protects, and one that follows a long tradition of booksellers serving as guardians of free expression in our society.

Not all countries view these issues the same way. And one of our greatest challenges is to work cooperatively with other governments to respect their laws without compromising our core values of free expression and free exchange of information--values that the Internet embodies on a global scale.

Nevertheless, Amazon.com believes it is censorship not to sell certain books because we believe their message repugnant, and we would be rightly criticized if we did so. Therefore, we will continue to make this book and other controversial works available in the United States and everywhere else, except where they are prohibited by law.

It is very hurtful to everyone at Amazon.com to be accused of racism.

a must read for those who want to understand the reputation of the jewish people and the history of persecution. Personally I am disappointed to see that such an average work could fool so many people including Henry Ford.

Before my quick review, I just realized that the word 'Jew' or 'Zion' isn't mentioned that much, which is weird and rather than being a pointing ones finger at the Jew; these protocols are saying that the Jews are like the Gods in the Iliad; that is, Omnipotent genius' looking down on you and me! So if it is a forgery, its a pro Jew one!

Anyway, the Protocols are always mentioned in films and documentaries and so it is inevitable that we will want to see what all the fuss is about.

And as for this antisemitic thing, well people who throw out labels are doing themselves a big disservice because if the label doesn't stick, then they have explaining to do because they have exposed a big weakness in their position. It is far safer, and less embarrassing, to engage in debate than it is to name call.

Who decided to diagnose people with this psychological-syndrome in the first place?
Surely one isn't beyond redemption by studying a controversial topic? Personally, I am not an anti this or pro that and I don't think you are either, it isn't illegal to read this book, yet!

The comedian, Doug Stanhope, has a routine where he jokes that the Jews are forever reminding us of their Holocaust (spelt with a capital H) but we are not allowed to remind them that they are not like Tibetan Buddhists. If we do point out that the Jews are not helpless Tibetans, then we are diagnosed as antisemitic and thrown in the dark room of guilt and ridicule!

Personally, I ordered this book out of a curiosity and, I have to admit this, my guilty pleasure is conspiracy theories, and what a bigger conspiracy than this! I read that this book has been banned in a few countries. This is interesting. They say that much of what is contained in the Protocols have come true. Indeed, whilst reading, I thought 'so what', then I realized that it was published before the obvious stuff inside happened.

Therefore, I am amazed that what is in here has all come true. It was apparently written 10 years before the First World War. This was years before the death of Christianity in Europe, the promotion of narcissism in the culture and the dumbing down of kids (and their parents). Who could have predicted all that 10 years before the Great War?

Europe was a different place back then. In Vienna at the turn of the 20th Century, tramps would go watch a Wagner opera and in England, school examinations, for 11 year olds were on the level as today's Oxford examinations (for 21 year olds)!!! So we have become dumbed down then.

If it is forged, then the guy who forged it was a genius who could predict the future. No one has pointed this amazing fact out! Who was this genius forgery guy who knew the future then?

Now there is one other possible explanation. Maybe it is the modern versions that are re-written so they will fit the 20th Century. This is possible, tho never suggested by anybody. I reckon it is very possible indeed.

Think about it this way... This is such a hot topic and we live in the digital age and so it is very easy to re-write a document. I won't check the original. Will you be motivated to find an original copy? Let us try!

The only way to see who's lying is to find an old copy from 100 years ago and if the original copy is the same as this version, then hold on to your hats because we are in for a very bumpy ride!

read this book with an open mind and then read another book entitled "The 300 Club." But don't stop there. Continue researching the topic. Amazing revelations.

Quite amazing how much of the content of this book could have been written as a blueprint for the world as it is right now. Almost like, I dunno, our masters are reading it or something.
Fake or not, doesn't matter, it seems to have a lot of relevance. Which I find very interesting for a pamphlet published over a hundred years ago. Things don't change very much, do they.
Nothing wrong with fakes, anyway. All but (possibly) one of the world's religious tracts have to be fakes, they can't all be the word of God, and that doesn't seem to give anyone pause.
