Présentation de l'éditeur

This is the story of Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans, whose insights transformed the ancient world and still inspire the realms of science, mathematics, philosophy and the arts. Einstein said that the most incredible thing about our universe was that it was comprehensible at all. As Kitty Ferguson explains, Pythagoras had much the same idea - but 2,500 years earlier. Though known by many only for his famous Theorem, in fact the pillars of our scientific tradition - belief that the universe is rational, that there is unity to all things, and that numbers and mathematics are a powerful guide to truth about nature and the cosmos - hark back to the convictions of this legendary scholar. Kitty Ferguson brilliantly evokes Pythagoras' ancient world of, showing how ideas spread in antiquity, and chronicles the incredible influence he and his followers have had on so many extraordinary people in the history of Western thought and science. 'Pythagoras' influence on the ideas, and therefore on the destiny, of the human race was probably greater than that of any single man before or after him' - Arthur Koestler.

Well, admittedly, that’s a pretty daunting challenge. But Kitty Ferguson, in this pleasant little surprise of an examination, makes a respectable case that Plato’s assertion has merit. The rich history of Greek philosophy, and all others to follow, started off with something of a Big Bang in the person of Pythagoras. He was of the first generation of philosophers, a contemporary of Thales, and may well be the most influential and long lasting of them all. Most of us know his name from the tedious efforts in school geometry to prove the theorem that the square of the whatever equals the hands of the clock on the wall and lunchtime is in about twelve more minutes. He recognized that numbers can be associated with the laws of nature and the world of modern science was launched. Nature’s mysteries can be examined and understood mathematically. That’s a pretty good day’s work. His conception of the celestial bodies producing a perfect-harmonious pitch (unheard) as they traverse the sky is the foundation of the Romanticized music of the cosmic spheres. Pure folly, of course, but a widely influential and pleasing illusion. This is some 550 years BCE when any such discoveries would be immediately cloaked in mystery, the occult, prophesy, astrology and all manner of hocus pocus, a veracity from which Pythagoras was not immune. But his mathematical influence is immeasurable. Copernicus, Kepler, Newton, Einstein, you name it, all recognize his fundamental contributions. Centuries later, science is still probing the boundaries of nature through measurement and calculation while many Pythagorean geometric and numeric relationships still hold up. A question pending today is whether mathematics is a true property of the universe or whether it was invented by humankind as a means to provide order to an unknown nature, that we don’t discover new scientific concepts, we invent them. Either way, as pointed out in this concisely written and entertaining account, when SETI discussed what messages to signal the existence of human intelligence into the vastness of space, they used Pythagorean laws in part to represent us.

I am still reading this as I keep stopping and thinking about and then sharing what I have read with others. I think this book is wonderously informative and intesting beyond belief. Much of this information I have 'heard' from different places but to read it all together where it is expanded on allows a much more comprehensive understanding.

Thanks for this!
