Présentation de l'éditeur

No one is safe from the past

James Blake and his family were safe - until he received the phone call that meant they knew where he was. A stolen Picasso lies at the root of an international conspiracy that reaches from London and Florence to Washington, Austin and Tijuana and into the life of a prominent US politician with devastating consequences not just for him but for so many of those caught up in the crime. Wolfgang Heller, a ruthless assassin, is seeking to eliminate those who have any knowledge of the theft. James Blake must come out of hiding and face the threats to his family by putting himself and his brother on the line.

Q&A with Seb Kirby

Q: Why did you want to write about an ordinary person suddenly placed in a situation where they have to face up to murder and organized crime?

Most of the time I get more from ordinary, flawed, people in situations that take them out of their normal lives. Then things get interesting as you see how they struggle with what seems for them to be impossible odds. I want to resolve things in the end on their side - my way, if you like, of righting some of the wrongs. So, what would you do if the mob targeted you and your family for murder and you had only the faintest clues as to why they were after you?

Q: Why does art crime feature as a main theme of the series?

After drugs and guns, art theft is the third largest international crime. One estimate puts it at $6 billion each year. Organized crime is behind many of the most notorious art thefts. Stolen works of art are used as a form of currency between mob members. I have a long term interest in art. Before I took up full time writing, much of my work included methods used to restore paintings and sculpture. It seemed natural to draw on this in creating the world that James Blake is drawn into. Uncovering what lies beneath a work of art and its history is also a good vehicle for developing the mystery and suspense that I’ve worked hard to capture in the series.

Q: Tell us more about the locations used in the series?

The conspiracy faced by James Blake is international in scope. I've been fortunate to travel widely in the past last twenty years. Favourite places include: Venice, Florence, San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, New York, London, The English Lake District, Paris, Lisbon and Crete. I've drawn widely on that experience in writing the James Blake thriller series. In REGRET NO MORE, the second in the series, events take place in London, Florence, San Diego, Austin, Albuquerque, Washington and Tijuana.

International bestseller Seb Kirby is the author of the James Blake Thriller series (TAKE NO MORE, REGRET NO MORE and FORGIVE NO MORE) and the Raymond Bridges sci fi thriller series (DOUBLE BIND). He says: 'I've been an avid reader from an early age - my grandfather ran a mobile lending library in Birmingham and when it closed my parents inherited many of the books. En savoir plus sur l'auteur

I was raised with books - my grandfather ran a mobile library in Birmingham and my parents inherited a random selection of the books. They weren't much interested in them; the books were piled up in a box room, gathering dust. I would disappear in there and resurrect much used classics - Zane Gray 'Riders of the Purple Sage', H G Wells 'The Invisible Man', Charles Dickens 'A Tale of Two Cities' and more obscure stuff that I don't now recall. I was hooked.

There was gap, a long gap, until I was lucky enough to find an inspirational school teacher. He donated his own books to make a lending library in a stock cupboard off the classroom. Kids queued to borrow the books. Except these were the classics - Franz Kafka 'Metamorphosis' and 'The Trial', George Orwell '1984' and 'Animal Farm', Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn 'One Day In The Life of Ivan Denisovich', Ray Bradbury 'Fahrenheit 451', Boris Pasternak 'Dr Zhivago', Arthur Koestler 'Darkness At Noon', Vladimir Nabokov 'Pale Fire', Ken Kesey 'One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest', Aldous Huxley 'Brave New World'.............

I've been an avid reader ever since.

This is the second in a series about James Blake. And it kept me reading from cover to cover, very quickly. I like the short chapters that keep moving rapidly from scene to scene. There are many characters in this novel, and each have unique lives, but also something in common. To begin with, James Blake and his wife Julie, who is about seven months pregnant, receive a call that sets them off from Weymouth, England, to London under assumed names of Charles and Mary Harrington.

Another prime character is German born Wolfgang Heller who is a brutal hired killer. He's been hired by a man in prison serving a life sentence, the vengeful, Matteo Lando. How many people have been targeted for death?

Jack Franks, an FBI agent, is the man to warn James Blake that the FBI knows he's been located and his life is at risk. He offers to help James, as he indicates that there are U.S. national security issues involved. The FBI will help him, if he helps them. Yet James does not know how he can help them.

Miles Blake, James' brother, an investigative reporter for a British newspaper, becomes aware of James' dilemma, and wants to help. However, he's been haunted by nightmares for three years because of what torture Julie had gone through by placing her in danger. Miles is not sure if he can right that wrong, but it is his duty as a brother. Would Julie ever trust him again?

There are a few more characters that enrich this fast-paced novel. There are numerous twists and turns in this compelling novel. It is gripping, intense, and captivates the reader to the end. Author Seb Kirby is an outstanding author who knows how to write what I think of as a classic action-packed thriller. I'm looking forward to the next book in the James Blake series.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A tense and exciting thriller 16 avril 2013

As the title suggests, this continues the story of James and Julia Blake, first encountered in Take No More. Once again, it concerns dark deeds in the world of art and people supported by drug money. Julia is seven months pregnant when their safe hideaway under the Witness Protection programme is compromised. The author catches the fears a woman has for her unborn child - if Julia is killed, two lives are lost. The Blakes flee and go into hiding and James' brother Miles, who Julia blames for her situation in Italy, comes in to help. She doesn't know if she can trust him. The Lando family are out to eliminate anyone who knows of their latest money making scam and someone's let the cat out of the bag, incriminating several big names.

This is a tense and exciting thriller with settings in London and across the Atlantic. James and Julia are out of contact and each doesn't know if the other is safe or even alive. We meet ruthless hit-men, members of different law enforcement agencies; often we can't tell the good from the bad. There's a heart-stopping chase and a massive explosion and a body in a London hotel. If you enjoyed Take No More you really have to read this one!
