A Cowboy's Promise

The thrill of the rodeo is gone for cowboy Caleb Jensen. Nowadays, he helps out at a Texas ranch, keeping bad memories locked away. Then the ranch owner's granddaughter unexpectedly returns home—with a request he can't accept. Former army captain Brenda Kaye is organizing a charity rodeo, and she needs Caleb to get back in the saddle. She's determined to save her family's ranch, even if it means working with the smart-aleck cowboy—and uncovering the mysteries that lie in their pasts. Brenda's used to the dangers of war, but if she trusts Caleb, could the next casualty be her heart?

“A Ranch to Call Home” by Leann Harris is the first book in her 'Rodeo Heroes' series and what a wonderful beginning. I have to say that the description on the back of the book makes it sound like this book is going to be something totally different for it seems to put emphasizes on things that are not even part of the book, or really not that important important in the book. I enjoyed the story don't get me wrong for it was far better that what was on the back of the book. Here is what I think it should have been:

Former army captain Brenda Kaye is home only to be thrown into organizing a charity rodeo, but she needs help. Rodeo cowboy, Caleb Jensen, helping out on a ranch to keep his past locked awhile for a little. Caleb is asked to help in ways that he just can't do but he is willing to give a hand for the good cause. The past is a haunting hurdle, but Brenda is use to all kinds of hurdles and dangers that come with war, but will her heart be the next casualty?

The description on the back makes the things that are not really the focus in the story to be something major, while the important things are not really even focused on. I actually found the story that was actually inside the covers of the book something far better than what was described.

Ex-captain Brenda Kaye is a woman who has gone through quite a bit with the Army, and now is trying to find her way through the future in civilian life. This is a heroine that is remarkable strong mentally and her leadership skills show through. There are times when we see a chink in that armor which is amazing to see how she handles when those chinks show themselves. She has things that she must face from her past, both recent and distant, and when she does, I have to say I was a bit surprised with how she handled everything.

Caleb Jensen is a man who is carrying around things on his shoulders that he really shouldn't. This is a man who seems to understand things that most people wouldn't which makes him someone very special for how he handles things that most men would run from. When he gives his word he honors that word, so he won't say he will do something if he can't fulfill his word, which makes him a very honorable man.

I found the story of past haunting a character or character's in the way it was, was really something different from other stories. I also so thoroughly enjoyed the understanding that was found by others, which is something that was really different especially in how that understanding is done. I watched the healing take place over the course of the story whether the character or characters saw it, and it was done so realistically, that well it was actually something that this reader found beautiful in a way.

The romance that happens between Brenda and Caleb is remarkably sweet in how it happens. Sure there is almost an instant attraction to each other but there is no battling the attraction, no denying the attraction, but they are not acting on the attraction either, but instead a friendship develops. It is this friendship that is amazing to this reader anyway because of how it started and what happened throughout the friendship.

The story moves smoothly along without any slow points or areas where it felt like important information was being skipped. The character's all were written so well that I felt for each and everyone of them as important information about their past came about. There were willing sacrifices that made, the selfish acts with some reasonable explanations, and the whole love of family that can be seen throughout the entire story.

I really hope that all who read this book I hope enjoy it as much as I did.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Warm Romance with a walk of faith 4 mars 2014

A Ranch to Call Home is a tender love story that is the epitome of Christian Romance. Without being preachy, the broken and wounded main characters push through their nightmares by trusting God.

And I do mean nightmares. Caleb and Kaye are both haunted. Both carry ghosts of past guilt, grief, and despair. Caleb blames himself for an accident to such an extent, that his entire existence has changed. And Kaye feels guilty for even being alive. The term broken barely scratches the surface of the pain these two characters endure. But the Lord brings about circumstances that stretch them to look ahead to what He is doing instead of looking back with doubt over the tragedies that happened before.

I think Leann Harris has found her forte in crafting stories that transport characters through a walk of faith.

Anyone seeking an easy read with a peaceful setting will love A Ranch to Call Home.

New fan of Leann Harris. Loved this story! There wasn't anything that I didn't like about this book. The characters and the development were all solid, the challenges that many soldiers face after becoming civilians again isn't easy and that is address very well in this book. Nice book about family, second chances, letting go and letting God. Recommended to one and all.
