5.0 étoiles sur 5 A perfect introduction to one of the best writers of our time 22 août 2014

It’s great to have this selection available as a Kindle book. As much as I enjoy Matt’s writing about technology, software development, productivity and the like, I believe his more personal pieces are when he is undoubtedly at his best.

To me, it’s also interesting to find out which stories he chose to include in the book, because there’s certainly no shortage of great material to choose from in his body of work. As usual, Matt doesn’t disappoint here.

This book is the perfect way to introduce your friends to one of the best writers on the web today. Actually, scratch that. One of the best writers, period.

I have been a reader of Matt Gemmell’s excellent blog for some years. He posts on subjects close to my heart, particularly writing and technology (and we share an enthusiasm for thoroughly obsolete computers). He has also recently taken a big step I can identify with. Matt Gemmell is now a full-time writer, and if Raw Materials is a good indication of his future output then I think his new career will be a brilliant one.

The author has collected some of the best writings from his blog, plus some new material, to form a narrative that is linked in both theme and character. It’s introspective and sometimes melancholy — but unflinchingly honest. Recurring themes include the power of memory, the importance of leaving a legacy, how our past influences our future. The essays are extremely personal and the beating heart of this book is Matt Gemmell himself, but his stories are really about the many facets of the human condition.

The individual stories cover a range of subjects. In the first one, the author looks at how we can return to the places of old memories but never truly go back. The second story is about the awareness of mortality. I think the seventh is actually my favourite: in this one Matt paints a picture of an old box room in his mother’s house, the kind of cupboard full of ancient nick-nacks every house seems to have. This particular cupboard happens to be the place where a box file full of his first stories has resided for many years.

The writing is beautiful and conveys both self-awareness and a certain nostalgia — or perhaps just a willingness to analyse the past. The narrative frequently returns to dwell on past events and Matt has a distinctive way of describing scenes from memory.

“Raw Materials” is a fine collection of Matt Gemmell’s best writing, but if you find yourself reading it and thinking “This is all just about Matt Gemmell” then I suggest you slow down and dig a little deeper. It’s not just about the author — it’s about everyone. If you’re looking for something short, though-provoking and thoroughly human to read, I can recommend this book wholeheartedly.

Best enjoyed with a dram of your favorite whisky while curled up on the sofa, I've been following Matt's writing for a many years now and he has always had something insightful to share, regardless of the topic. This collection is no different. Matt speaks from the heart and conveys that raw emotion that everyone feels but is often so difficult to eloquently put into words. It's easy to relate to his stories and thoughts, even if they aren't the same as yours. Occasionally I'll do a double take on the Queen's English as the spellings are slightly different from American English, but it flows very well with the stories (Note- I used to work for a newspaper as a copy editor and I'm unclear if others would be as stringent).

I strongly recommend checking out some of his other writings at mattgemmell.com - you won't be disappointed.

I have been an avid reader of Matt's work online for some time now, and this collection of essays is a powerful summation of many of the personal events and memories that have no doubt shaped his thoughts today. There is dim and dark, however also brightness, and it is only a short step from Matt's to your own memories which will inevitably surface when reading these pieces.
A fantastic read and one I highly recommend.

Mr. Gemmell's essays are always wonderful in their truthfulness and love for the reader. Each essay is a great snack before a walk in the park. Delicious. Thought provoking.
