Présentation de l'éditeur

Raziel's Shadow is Book #1 in the epic ANGELS AND DJINN trilogy:

Zerai thought he was a long-lost prince. He thought he would be blessed by the angels to slay an army of demons. He thought he would reclaim his grandfather's golden throne. He thought wrong.

After years of living in the wilderness with other orphans, hiding from mercenaries and monsters, Zerai has lost all of his friends, leaving him alone on a quest to save his people. But even accompanied by legendary warriors and seers from the east, his chances of success seem bleak against the vast southern armies, packs of bloodthirsty ghuls, and huge fiery ifrits that have claimed his homeland.

As they journey through primordial forests, war-torn savannas, and the mountains of the mysterious djinn, Zerai realizes that he is not the hero he wanted to become, and he finds love in the arms of a young woman struggling to accept that her death may be soon, and it may not be glorious. So with far humbler eyes he arrives at the ancient city of Naj Kuvari, where a witch queen has found immortality in the corpse of a fallen angel.

Drawn from elements of African history and Arabian mythology, the ANGELS AND DJINN series takes readers to a dark fantasy world that feels much like our own reality, with heroes and lovers who are all too human, but confronted with the fantastical and horrific creatures of a supernatural world that we can only explore in our strangest dreams and worst nightmares.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Didn't make sense to me 3 janvier 2014

The writing was fine and I didn't notice a lot of editing issues. The plot was original and had real promise. But I just couldn't enjoy the book as I thought the actions by the characters weren't logical. Major spoilers follow: the first thing that set me off is why such a small contingent of warriors was sent to fight the demons (who basically took over a whole country) and why the supposed prince wasn't allowed to brief them or at least go with them (despite the queen hinting at when they would leave). It seems to me that without the prince stowing away on the ship, the small group of warriors would have been killed at sea by the octopus-like creature before ever getting to the kingdom. They then would have been killed on the beach, near the forest, etc etc. This group was completely naive and unprepared for their mission. They would have been killed again in the throne room (had the coup not already been planned by the natives). I couldn't understand why the lead mage didn't tell anyone his plan for reestablishing the barrier (of course he dies and they have to figure it out themselves).

The author claims he wants to write about strong female characters that his daughters can look up to. I would not want my daughter to read this book. A female warrior and the "prince" become romantically involved and appear to love each other, but she sleeps with another female because she feels sorry for her. This seems to make sense to the "prince" so he lets it go. I may be a prude, but I think there are other ways to console someone than sleep with them (I'm sure my wife would not like it if I slept with someone else because they were depressed). Then later the 2 females and "prince" have a 3-way with the prince ending up with the depressed female while the warrior female goes home. I just could not follow this relationship logically and wouldn't recommend the book for younger readers.

Anyway, I also thought the book was too descriptive in places and became boring, but some readers enjoy that type of writing. I will not be continuing the series.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 My favorite book by Joseph Robert Lewis so far! 15 septembre 2014

This book was not what I was expecting --- but in a good way!

My favorite book by Joseph Robert Lewis so far! An epic adventure in an entirely new world. The characters were easy to relate to and well developed. Every chapter was chock full of dangerous monsters, magical creatures, near death dilemmas, and heroic solutions.

My only complaint would be that it took too long to finally meet one of the angels (I guess my hope was that they might be the main characters). But, then again, it didn't detract from the over-all story and, if anything, actually pushed me to keep reading because I knew eventually one would appear. When that moment did finally arrive it was spectacular and left me wanting more.

I can't wait to read the next book in the trilogy!

Young man strives for glory, it's snatched away, finds love looses it, finds true friendships and more of the pain of loss, fights demons and gouls, and in the ends finds - well a chance for a new beginning. The story is a complete story but opens the door for continuing the saga of the boy and his new friends

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantasy you can believe in. 8 octobre 2013

This is a fantasy you can actually believe in, with real and honest characters in real and honest relationships. There were times I wanted to strangle people, there were times I felt pity for them, making for a very truthful form of storytelling. I honestly was curious as to how the book would end and where people would end up in their lives, once their quest was over.

There were some areas in the book where I either missed information or where the story was honestly a little confusing and occasionally the sentence structure wasn't arranged the way I would have preferred, but such things weren't too noticeable.. There were also some areas where I felt that a character was making a decision based on what the author expected of them, but overall the setting and the characters involved made for some very good storytelling. I would be interested to know where the series continues from here and would hope that the same honesty of life that is given to this book is given to the others.

Note: Though this book was a free gift from the author, the content of my review was in no way influenced by the gifting. The book speaks for itself and my review would have been worded just this way even if I'd gone out and bought it. I also give bonus points for Text To Speech enabling on Kindle format.... but that also wasn't a factor in the above review.
