Real Blues-Rock Gold!!! 4 janvier 2012
Par Paul Watkins - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
Real Blues-Rock guitar is the best Book/DvD guitar course available!! It's that good!! Kenny Chipkin, (Author) has put together rock solid instruction that is flawless, both the DvD and the book. It is complete!! The book and Dvd is divided into four sections:
1. Blues-Rock Rhythm Parts:
The Boogie Pattern
Power 5th Chords
Major Triads
Dominant 7th Chords
Dominant 7th with no 3rd
Dominant 9th Chords
Dominant 7(#9) Chord
Minor Triads
Minor 7th Chords

Part 2. Blues-Rock Riffs
The Minor Pentatonic Scale
Blues Scale Riffs
Riff/Chord Combos

Part 3. Blues-Rock Lead Guitar
Minor Pentatonic Scale Forms
Connecting the Five Minor Pentatonic Forms
The Major Pentatonic Scale
Connecting the Five Major Pentatonic Forms
The "Long Form" Major Pentatonic Scale
The Mixolydian Mode

Part 4. Blues-Rock Guitar Greats
Duane Allmen & Dickey Betts (The Allman Brothers Band)
Duane Allman
Dickey Betts
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Page
Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top)
Jimi Hendrix

Part 4. is jaw-dropping good. The section is designed as a collection of character studies. Each piece brings together a particular player's most identifiable trademarks in the context of a vamp associated with each musician. These solos are based on extensive research through varied sources, transplanting licks and phrases from their original feels and tempos into this fabricated situation. Each player's style has been reproduced with painstaking attention to detail--notably where articulations, touch and rhythm are concerned. Work through the transcriptions and video carefully, lick by lick, section by section, and you will have years of the most revered guitar greats' work in your hands.
Do yourself a favor, buy this now!!!

This is not a blues/rock entry level study.... 30 janvier 2012

I own over 500 Play Along and reference books, chiefly through Amazon and this is definitely one of the best! Chipken reaches out, is all over the fretboard and explains things. The problem I had is that he reads from the narrative held in the book, which could have best been used for backup tracks instead of using the disk capacity in repetition....His study into blues and rock artists is about the best I have seen. His playing is flawless. The other issue is if you are less than an immediate or advance player, then this book might not be for you.....there is nothing basic about this offering but after many years of playing (not really knowing the whys and wherefores)a lot of doors opened for me.....A very good investment if you are an aspiring blues or rock player....

Like his Book/DVD set on the Real Blues, this one on
Rock/Blues is an INCREDIBLE RESOURCE (2 DVDs, for God's sake).
Don't take my word for it....check out Kenn Chipkin on youtube....there are a bunch of extracts featured there.
Thank you Mr. Chipkin.

Ideas, Ideas, Ideas. Period 28 mars 2013

I definitely had to look through the materials before making a judgment on this book. The second DVD alone is killer as it "breakdown" the styles of different guitarists such as Clapton, Page and Hendrix.
The DVDs also have the musical elements of the book that you can add into you Itunes library while the DVDs show you the techniques to get there. Personally I feel this is a pretty unique combination.
While I'm not one to comment on other reviewers, I feel that I have to on this one. One particular reviewer stated that Kenn Chipken is trying to be "cool" and he should act like a "real guy." To that reviewer I say, once you have the experience that Kenn Chipkin has, when you produce your own book-DVD instructional maybe, just maybe then I will take your critiques seriously. This is a cool book.
I also can't stress enough to look for discounted purchases from Goodwill stores on Amazon. I haven't been disappointed with them yet, their description of the materials they sell is dead on, your purchase helps others in need and they offer prices you can live with. My copy of this book cost me $5 and some change and the DVDs had never been opened!

Fantastic "survey" of blues-rock 6 avril 2013
Par Tristan Juricek - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
This is one of the most awesome surveys of rock music from basically the 60s-early 70s style.

The coverage is fairly broad as well as the difficulty. The first section covers a lot of rhythm playing, which is quite approachable. It then goes on to think about riffs and later more complex solos. The later material gets a bit more difficult.

One of things I liked most was the focus on chord forms as they were applied. The "theory" in this regard was clearly backed up with examples from multiple sources. Often, theory alone doesn't "connect" with me; I end up thinking mechanically instead of artistically.

The DVD is quite useful. It has "breakout sessions" highlighting the significant aspects of most of the examples. While playing along is a little funky (due to the playback being a bit sped up) it does show some fairly "real" examples in a clear manner. The production here might sound and feel "cleaner" than what you would find on the real album material, but I think that helps. Often, acts like Led Zeppelin will have a lot of overdubbing, which makes it hard to discern exactly what was being played.

After having gone through the material, I honestly don't think there was anything necessarily left out. From here, you'd probably dive in to the techniques of a specific artist. That's why I call it a "survey". It's a starting point for getting a feel for what "blues rock" really means. There's a ton of riffs to pull in, and many different directions you could take from it. Honestly, I got more out of this than I have a few months of lessons.
