Présentation de l'éditeur

When her dreams are smashed by an assignment which would leave her trapped in a job far beneath her abilities, Eleanor has nowhere to turn. The Imperial system prides itself on perfection, leaving no space for complaints. In desperation she rejects her assignment and the quality of life she would have been guaranteed - then, suddenly free for the first time in her life, finds her imagination captured by legends which tell of a secret society of elite assassins. Rebellion is the first of three novels in the Chronicles of Charanthe series.

Biographie de l'auteur

Rachel lives with her husband in the middle of the English Cotswolds. When she's not writing, she likes to gather inspiration by seeking out life's little adventures: getting lost in as many different countries as possible, collecting skills like other people collect stamps, and generally marvelling at the variety the world has to offer.

A good start for a debut author 26 juillet 2012
Par Zoe - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
In "Rebellion", Rachel Cotterill creates a world where children are raised in schools, ignorant of their parentage, and assessors assign professions to students upon graduation. So, what does a girl do when she believes she deserves more than the assignment she was given? "Rebellion" follows the Eleanor's story as she rebels against her assigned fate and searches for the elusive Assassin's guild. The first half of the story covers ~ a year and focuses on Eleanor's search for the guild. The second half echoes Harry Potter and focuses on her two years at the school for assassins.

The first half of the book was great. Eleanor is gutsy and curious, a fantastic heroine. She tumbles in and out of scrapes, surviving on her wits, her desire to find the guild, and some measure of luck. When she finds the guild, however, the action slows down significantly. We see her in potions class, projectile class, getting outfitted for clothes and daggers, reluctantly hanging out in bars with her classmates. There is a competition at the end of the book--a series of three trials that she must go through in order to compete for a seat on the council. (Does it sound like Harry Potter yet?) The tension leaked out of the second half of the book and it just didn't end with the same bang as which it started.

The descriptions in the book are detailed. For the most part, it works because it paints a detailed picture of Eleanor's surroundings. After awhile, however, it felt repetitive. I started skipping over sections where she describes the tiles on the pavement and the mosaic patterns on the floor. There are also many scenes that focus just on what Eleanor is doing, i.e., moving through the environment with little interaction with other characters. (Admittedly, it could be a function of the story, i.e., a woman's solitary search for a mysterious organization.) It's a shame because the dialogue in the book is tight and snappy. I found myself skipping through Eleanor-only scenes to find the next scene where others are brought in to interact with her.

Still, this book was definitely worth reading and I will be picking up the sequel.

A Fantastic Book 24 novembre 2010
Par L. Hutchings - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This is a really interesting book. It reads like fantasy genre, but with a unique social setup. I was drawn in by Eleanor's situation and found this very difficult to put down. I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be looking for the next book.

Great book! 24 novembre 2010
Par Robert J Stelling - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I am an avid reader and am always looking for a new fiction book to read. Rachel does a wonderful job of bringing Eleanore's adventures to life. I was drawn in from the first paragraph as it captured my imagination with 'the man wearing a grew tunic was carrying a large box as he followed the head mistress'. We will all want to know what awaits each of the girls. The book is easy to follow and has me wanting more!

My family passes on these books, and I plan on sharing Rebellion: chronicles of charanthe with them in book form and on the kindle as I have others. A great holiday gift for any reader in the family!

Would you rebell if your future was decided by someone else? 29 septembre 2014
Par E. VanZwoll - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle Achat vérifié
Born into a society where your future is assessed and a job assigned to you, Eleanor opts out of her dead-end assignment. Deciding to follow the clues leading to the unknown, and possibly non-existent, elite society of assassins, Eleanor finds herself on the run. Working with smugglers, she ends up another country... and over her head. Will Eleanor be able to survive imprisonment, return to her own country, and still follow her dreams?

Rebellion is a very unique book in the world of government-heavy, dystopian novels. Instead of fighting against an oppressive society, Eleanor simply walks away from the path accepted by most everyone else. In her goal to find the Association, she turns from a naive and somewhat spoiled girl to a strong woman who is willing to fight for what she wants. The characters in this story are not perfect... especially not Eleanor. Her troubles start because of her own actions and lack of foresight, and she really doesn't start thinking until her life is on the line. She does improve, however, and the plot is interesting and complex enough to keep you reading.

Not Only for the Fantasy Aficionado 23 octobre 2010
Par Josephine Hellberg - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This novel is as charming as it is exciting, and it contains everything I seek in a novel; mysteries, challenges, friendship, but foremost, strong characters who are easy to sympathise with, even when they do the unexpected and take a liberating step away from convention.

The novel is written in a style which is easy to follow, and the dialogue feels natural and engaging -- and doesn't reveal more to the reader than it would to the main character. It is a definite plus as it allows one to join the journey, look for clues and solve the puzzles alongside with the characters!

My overall impression with the novel is that it in a convincing manner shows that there are more possibilities available to a person than meets the eye; that the world is ripe with adventure -- does one only dare to cease the opportunity to do so. And that is something Eleanor, the main character, does with inspiring conviction, rendering this novel a satisfying read for everyone -- and not only the fantasy aficionado.
