Présentation de l'éditeur

In this autobiography, readers see how Anya Derrick’s life has been intimately connected to the earthly city of Jerusalem in Palestine. There, surrounded by political conflict and religious tensions, she was raised in the spirit of Holy Russia, as manifested in the life of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission, the Mount of Olives convent, the Gethsemane convent, and the Bethany School. Her spiritual life was nurtured by St John (Maximovitch) of Shanghai and San Francisco, Archbishop Antony (Sinkevich) of Los Angeles, Archpriest George Grabbe, Mother Mary (Robinson), and in particular the English priest-monk Lazarus (Moore), as well as other luminaries of the Russian Church Abroad. Through the author’s eyes, a new perspective can be gained on their pastoral ministry and personalities. Her experience with these people and places sustained her faith during subsequent wilderness years when the Church was geographically distant from Anya and her burgeoning family. After marriage in America, she struggled to preserve her cultural and religious heritage and even more so to share these with her husband and instill them in her children. Anya’s life opens up a very different 20th century. She shows how current situations have been shaped by past events such as the Bolshevik revolution, Russian civil war, and the Arab–Israeli conflict. She offers a window into the struggles, life, and aspirations of the Russian diaspora after the Communist takeover of their ancestral homeland. This vivid work will speak to and inspire anyone fighting to maintain the faith and practices of their youth.

Several months ago, I received an advanced copy of Recollections of Jerusalem by Anya Berezina Derrick. I admit that I was apprehensive about reading a book that deals almost completely with the hardships that Anya, a Serbian Russian from Palestine, endures throughout her life in the Holy Land during World War II and the Arab-Israeli War, life as the wife of an American living in New York and Chicago, and finally her return to the West Bank with her husband for work. It surprised me how relevant a memoir such as this is for Americans living a luxurious life with reliable electricity, abundant food, and safety. With news coming from the Holy Land as dire as ever, reading Recollections of Jerusalem helped me to understand the complexities of life in Jerusalem in the past and in the present in a way that the nightly news programs simply cannot. Recollections of Jerusalem is a book that everyone - homemaker to historical scholar - should add to their reading list if they wish to be informed about the world in which we live.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Memoir of Anya Derrick 18 juillet 2014
Par Stuart Dunn - Publié sur Amazon.com
Recollections of Jerusalem is the autobiography/memoir of Anya Berezina Derrick. Anya Derrick was born in Yugoslavia in the 1930s. She was named after her grandmothers, both named Anna, and her birthday was close to the feast day of St. Anna. Her mother was a nurse and her dad was stationed at a military base near Belgrade. Unfortunately, he took ill with tuberculosis. Anya and her mother were on a pilgrimage in Palestine when World War II broke out, and Anya's mother was hoping to bring back a garment for Anya's father to wear which had been blessed on Christ's burial place. Unfortunately, they were never able to see him again. They were unable to return to Yugoslavia, and were forced to seek asylum in Palestine in 1939. Her father died in 1944, and her mother died without ever finding out what happened to him or where he was buried.

The book isn't all heartache and tragedy, though there is a bit of it in this book. This book also is the coming of age of a young girl. We see and get to read her interactions with great spiritual fathers and mothers, like Fr. Lazarus Moore, St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco, Mother Mary and Archbishop Antony. We also get introduced to her husband Wayne and her children. She tells a cute story about giving birth to twins, her 13 month old son hearing the birth sounds, and climbing out of his crib to come see what all the noise was. I can't imagine having that many children that young, but she was blessed. Other stories in this book include her visit to the Holy Land with her oldest son, and her family's eventual return to the Holy Land during President Carter's tenure in office.

I'm not really sure how to review this book in all honesty. It's like reviewing someone's life, and how do you do that? In this book I learned a bit about Serbia, the Russian Orthodox Church, the Holy Land in the time of World War II and afterwards. It was an interesting read, and one you should check out if you are interested in any of the subjects I just mentioned.

This book 'Recollections of Jerusalem' was enjoyable, except for the anti-Jewish references calling the Israelis, restored to our ancestral Homeland, "trigger-happy Zionists" who are perpetrating "the Israeli occupation of Palestine." This type of Jew-hatred is considered meritorious among these types of Christian Church people. Hopefully, this ignorance in favor of so-called Palestinian (read 'Philistine') sovereignty will be healed in the not-so-distant future by the Presence of the Jewish Messiah Emmanuel. Mz. Berezina would have done well to have studied the Book of Romans chapters 9,10,11 . . . as well as John 4:22; Revelation 7:4-9; Isaiah 60:12-14 and 66:23; 2Samuel 5:7-10;1Kings 8:1; Matthew 17:11 . . . This type of 'Orthodox' Christian ignorance and contempt has perennially estranged the Jewish people from what should be Millennial, Judeo-Christian Civilization. Mz. Berezina has unwittingly advocated 'Palestinian' violence in the denial of the Restoration of the Kingdom of David and Solomon (Acts 1:6-8) . . . www.scepterofjudah.net / Alex Rothschild.
