Présentation de l'éditeur

REDEMPTION PROTOCOL is a hard hitting space opera/ scifi adventure. It is the FIRST book in the Contact series. Please download the taster if you want to sample the style.

John Havoc was betrayed into murdering over three hundred thousand people with a biological weapon. The only thing left in his hollowed out world is retribution.

Havoc is drawn into a top secret Contact mission - humanity's first - after an extraordinary energy source is detected at the limit of reachable space. While the crew of the AV Intrepid struggle with saboteurs and hostile ships, they fail to realize that the alien world holds dangers that threaten far more than their ship. Imprisoned on Plash is a weapon of unimaginable horror - a species eliminator.

Though the scenario is somewhat predictible, this is a very good read. Terse and intense style, quite deep insights into human psychology, an interesting vision of the future of mankind in space, and tantalizing glimpses into a complex society. I loved it, and will soon rezad the following books in the series.

If the Stainless Steel Rat were the lead character in Alastair Reynolds' "Revelation Space" series, you'd end up with something like "Redemption Protocol". Fun and fast-paced, but perhaps too many different ideas crammed into one book, without all of them being properly developed. The book begins with a large cast of characters, and I braced myself for the mental effort needed to keep track of them all. However, in the bloodbath that follows, the ensemble cast is quickly whittled down to a manageable number and the story then gets going. The ending is nowhere as stunning and breathtaking as other reviewers suggest, but is certainly worth the 700 pages needed to get to it. I'll be interested to see what Mike Freeman comes up with next.

Intricate plotting and characters, and a brilliant ending that I found to be quite inspiring!

Careful though, along the way are some terrifying situations, gripping suspense and stomach wrenching brutality. My God, that scene in the shuttle near the end, I was on the edge of my seat... Horrifying and desperate!

The book really hits the ground running - it has a great beginning that shows Havoc's powerful motivation and sets the stage for the story. Amongst the intrigue is a lot of subtle setting up that pay off later - I think I missed some of this first time and will read it again. Once you reach the dinner all bets are off! The momentum just builds and builds. You keep thinking it can't sustain the pace but it builds even more!

I agree with the review about it being like a hollywood movie in a sense, you can see it. Except the story is better, the characters are better and the whole story really moves you. If the ending doesn't move you - you're dead!

It takes a genre that is often hackneyed and cliched and makes it gritty, believable and exciting. I loved it, and thoroughly recommend it!

All I can say is that it had me hooked from the first line. The story follows Havoc's betrayal and the subsequent perilous contact mission, drawing you inevitably towards its gripping conclusion. Danger lurks everywhere and no-one can be trusted. Its suspenseful, scary and thrilling.

This book would make a great action film, and I can't wait for the sequel.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Decent action and imagination, characters and writing not so great 9 août 2011

I found it quite entertaining, but it was let down by some dodgy writing, and shallow and uninteresting characters. The cluedo style murder mystery stuff wore thin really quick, because I didn't care who half of the characters were, and most of their deaths didn't really matter for the story anyway. Anyone who was developed a little more and was influential in the story turned out to be unrealistic and corny. The sci-fi/technology stuff was good, and the action was well done and kept me reading to the end.

Right from the cleverly-constructed opening scenes, this book grabs you and doesn't let go until, 600-odd action-packed pages later, you reach the only disappointment of the whole story: you're left wanting even more.

Essentially a tale of betrayal and - as you can guess from the title - subsequent redemption, "Redemption Protocol" is an action / thriller sci-fi epic. It's epic in scale and effect rather than in aeons of time - you can easily imagine this book being made into an all-guns-blazing Hollywood special effects extravaganza, with a grim-faced ass-kicking (anti)hero and at least 3 glamorously ass-kicking lady co-stars. I found the book to have everything you'd expect from the genre - a riveting story, a main character you want to see win against insurmountable odds, villains you want to see meet a grisly end, sexy (and not cringey) encounters, violent "make your eyes water" fight scenes, space on a grand scale, and cool alien technology.

"Redemption Protocol" may be "sci-fi" but it doesn't get bogged down in sciencey techno-babble, though you feel reassured that the author has done his homework and it doesn't feel (too) implausible for a futuristic thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed the read, and as I said at the beginning, my only disappointment was to be left at the end wanting more, more, more! - Recommended.
