Présentation de l'éditeur

Book Two in the USA TODAY bestselling Off the Subject series

While fashion design major Caroline Hunter may have been born economically unlucky, in college, she’s been lucky in love. Until her senior year at Southern University. She’s gone from a serious long term boyfriend to a string of crappy dates.

Then she meets mathematics grad student Reed Pendergraft.

Reed is everything she’s not looking for. Serious. Headed for a low paying university job. Boring. Caroline spent the first eighteen years of her life wondering where her next meal was coming from. She sure wasn’t getting trapped in that life again with a man living on a professor’s salary.

An encounter with Reed in a club proves she might have pegged him wrong. He brings out a lusty side she never knew she had. But just when she’s about to give in to her hormones, Reed makes a fool out of her.

When she shows up for the first committee meeting for Southern University’s Fall fashion show, a fundraiser for underprivileged kids, Caroline’s horrified to discover the insufferable Reed is the committee chairman. While she refuses to tolerate his totalitarian rule of the committee, she’s not sure she’ll survive the month with her heart—and her pride—intact. Just when she thinks she has everything figured out, she finds that her entire life has been redesigned, thanks to Reed Pendergraft.

Biographie de l'auteur

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became a nomadic gypsy, living in five cities, four states and ten houses over the course of ten years before she moved back to her roots. She speaks English and smattering of Spanish and Chinese which she learned through an intensive Nick Jr. immersion period. Her hobbies include witty Facebook comments (in own her mind) and dancing in her kitchen with her children. (Quite badly if you believe her offspring.) Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within in two minutes. Her lack of the sense of smell allows her to perform many unspeakable tasks. She has six children and hasn’t lost her sanity. Or so she leads you to believe.

**May contain slight spoilers**
When buying this book, I was doubtful I would fall in love with it. It is the second book in this series and I fell in love with the first book. I tend to have a difficult time when it is not centered around the initial characters. I was worried that I would not become as attached to Caroline and Reed's story as I was to Scarlett and Tucker's. I should have NEVER doubted Swank's abilities to draw me in. I am a believer. Caroline's journey of not only accepting her past, but embracing it was truly magical. She grows leaps and bounds throughout the book. And Reed... jeez, what is there to say about him that will be within the recommended word length? He is simply wonderful. I love how candid he was. He was never afraid to call Caroline out on her (excuse the curse word) s***. He kept her level headed and helped her realize she was going about her love life all wrong. I found myself cheering for them, just as Lexi was. It was amazing. While I have fallen in love with the NA genre, this book elevates it. It isn't just about a girl who had a tough life, so she is guarded. It is about the personal journey Caroline goes on for self acceptance. It's a great message for anyone reading it. We are who we are, our past, good or bad, had made us this way and that's okay. It's about what you do with it in the future. Please read the first book in the series before enjoying this installment. It makes it soooo much better. Thank you, Denise Swank, for the fantastic story and I cannot wait for what come from you next.

Coming from a backwoods trailer park in Tennessee, Caroline Hunter is determined to rise above her penniless past and become something great. Studying hard to become a designer, Caroline doesn't leave much room in her life for boys. The guys Caroline does go for seem to have money and a little prestige, almost the complete opposite of her past. When Caroline meets Reed Pendergraft at a college party, she is both attracted to him and strangely argumentative.
Yet Reed isn't exactly who Caroline thinks he is. He isn't a penniless college graduate student, he is actually something that is so much more. Not wanting to be desired for his influence, he keeps his secret from everyone, including Caroline. Having to work together on a fall fashion show, that has the possibility to create Caroline's career or reveal Reed for who he is, allows for the duo to really get to know one another and in turn, fall for eachother.
Having read the previous book, After Math, I recognized Caroline as being Scarlett's best friend. I don't really remember having an opinoin about her one way or the other, but I absolutely adored Caroline in this book. Sassy, funny, and desperate to succeed, Caroline shines. Her verbal sparring with Reed is quick and sharp witted and Reed gives as good as he gets. I devoured the book within just a few hours and honestly was disappointed I'm going to have to wait a few weeks until #3 comes out, featuring Reed's sister.
Witty and fun, I loved Redesigned. Funny and heartfelt, Reed and Caroline's relationship grows from argumentative attacks on one another to smoking hot scenes that scorch the pages. Business As Usual, featuring Reed's sister Lexi, is expected to be published in April and I can't wait!

2.0 étoiles sur 5 ok book- but for a short story - it's expensive. 8 juillet 2013

I like this author as she doesn't write cliched characters.

For example- her first book that features a bad boy and a math nerd was executed in a manner that wasn't the usual boy-saves-girl. It's more girl-saves-boy. I think most people are sick of the feeble and inept protagonist, whose lives come into focus only through the addition of a melodramatic attraction to a charismatic male figure who seems to carry all the personality in the relationship. In Swank's books - we do not suffer this fate.

I think the premise of this book was really good. However, it veered off after the 3rd meeting. I loved how they first met and Caroline gives Reed the brush off. It's not melodramatic - it's just awkward but sexy. I was hoping for this sophisticated behavior (a touch of hostility disguised by witty (burgeoning acerbic) and almost civil dialogue and conduct). It had a Pride and Prejudice feel to it.

However, this doesn't last. The slow burning chemistry, dialogue and maturity dissipates into a melodramatic angst-y teen drama. The character development veers off course and the dialogue is cringe worthy at times. I don't understand the Marxist take over comment either - I mean seriously - Marxist?? I know Caroline's major is Design but still.

However, there were MANY positives. I liked how Reed initially wasn't the cliched type. He's not a big hunk - imagine Bill Gates in his early 20s. That's Reed. I liked that- I liked that he didn't have abs but was nerdy and a bit weedy. It gave him depth. However, (THIS IS NOT A SPOILER) it's obvious that he's trying to hide that he comes from old money. And this ruined it for me. I would have loved it if he were ordinary. But handsome and a TOFF'S UPBRINGING - meh. I loved the goodlooking nerd with brains to make it somewhere. Not a rag to riches Cinderella story (or rather trailer park to marrying into Aspen lodges).

Just not my taste (I'm one of those girls to despise Pretty Woman, hence it's just me - although Caroline isn't a street walker - but basically no Cinderella stories for me).

ALSO - at one stage Lexi meets with an Investment Banker. I kid you not - in Tennessee? Not a Wealth Manager (as is the norm for most rich folk) - but an IB.... Is she's going to organise an IPO? A takeover? A Rights Issue? These details do get to me.

I would have given this more stars but I didn't finish it (because it was just too obvious what was going to happen) and so I ought to by default give it 1* but I really liked Reed (minus the cash) hence its a 2*. It's also expensive for a short story. After Math has also gone up in value - I didn't pay that much.

Southern University fashion design major Caroline Hunter went from a long-term relationship to a series of losers. Then Caroline meets the handsome mathematics grad student Reed Pendergraft. He is everything she is NOT looking for. She wants someone who has a good paying job and money. In her mind that means security. He’s serious, boring and headed for a low paying university job. Caroline spent the first eighteen years of her life wondering where her next meal would come from.
A chance encounter at a club finds that Caroline has Reed pegged wrong. He brings out her hot and lusty side but he makes a fool out of her. Not cool Reed, not cool at all. Caroline shows up for a committee fundraiser meeting to find that Reed is the chairman for the Southern University's Fall fashion show. Read the book and find out what happens next… A roller coaster ride for sure. I just might have to apply to grad school if all the men are like Reed.

**Spoler Alert**First let me start by saying I am a HUGE Denise Grover fan.. For some reason I didnt connect with this book like I did the others. After I was done I felt like in the majority of the book there was focus on her desinging work and not enough on building her relationship with Reed. For Caroline to be in college trying to make something of herself and at the same time being known for looking for her sugar daddy after having such a sad backstory left a bad taste in my mouth. It seemed like the two goals contradicted themselves. Kinda rememinded me of that Julia Roberts movie Mona Lisa Smiles movie where those young girls go to college show so much potential only to give it up to take care of wealthy husbands..
