The first of five projected volumes on Magritte's work is written by David Sylvester and Sarah Whitfield and presents a systematic survey of the artist's oil paintings produced during the years 1916 to 1930. The volume is made up of two sections. The first consists of an illustrated detailed chronology of the artist's career and the second includes 333 illustrated entries which discuss the dating, genesis and history of the work. Substantial extracts are included from Magritte's largely unpublished correspondence, given both in the original French and in English translation. In addition, there follows an appendix consisting of fifty untraced works of which there is no photographic record.
The subsequent four volumes, to be published in 1993, cover Magritte's oil paintings and objects of 1931-1948 (Volume II), oil paintings, objects and sculptures of 19491967 (Volume III), works in water-based media (gouaches, temperas, watercolours and papiers collés) of 1920-1967 (Volume IV) and, finally, an annotated bibliography, supplement and indices (Volume V). Volume II is written by David Sylvester and Sarah Whitfield ; Volumes III and IV are by Sarah Whitfield and Michael Raeburn. All five volumes are edited by David Sylvester.
Sarah Whitfield is the author of a number of publications including Fauvism (1991) ; the catalogue of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, an exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, Lugano, 1991, and the catalogue for the Magritte exhibition in London, New York, Houston and Chicago, 1992-1993.
