Présentation de l'éditeur

In a kingdom ravaged by the beasts and terrors of an ancient war, the only hope against them is the army of mixed-blood beings known as the King's Legion: dragoons, shadowmarch, sorcerers, titans... and the Princes of the Blood, nigh-invincible warriors of fearsome magic and strength, their only weakness a need for pure human blood.

When his brother runs away, Raffé agrees to undergo the Blooding, but he is a pale imitation of his strong, capable brother. No one expects him to survive and become a Prince, merely to die to save the rest of his family and preserve honor.

But runaways and weaklings are the least of the kingdom's concerns when an ancient evil returns with new tricks, and their only hope lies with knowledge long lost and a fierce bond forged in darkness...

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good but not the best for this writer 7 mars 2014

I pretty much agree with another third star reviewer. I click buy on pretty much every novel by this writer, but while this one contains several trademarks of her style, I did not feel it was her best effort.

It has complex magical system, where interesting creatures (humans, and not humans, humans but not quite) defend the kingdom from evil and the hero who is thrown in the set up partially by chance, but partially because he is brave and felt the need to offer himself instead of his brother to help his family.

Hero maturing on the job, being accepted by fellow warriors, I read it in her books before, but I did not feel that the set up was the same at all, she almost always gives it a nice twist. However it felt like the story piqued in several wrong places and what I felt was needed to tell me as a reader was not and information I got several times felt kind of useless.

But I am making allowances for this being first book in the series - especially because several characters felt underdeveloped. It was a gripping story, but I needed more.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A little pronagraphic but...... 17 mai 2014

I like the premise of a world where same sex pairing and marriages is as natural as any other. I especially like the Gladiatorial feel of a society that is headed by a strong masculine warrior class that respects strength as well as the deep emotional connections between men. It's very similar to the true histories of Alexander the Great.

The sexual encounters become a little pornographic. I understand the author is trying to appeal to a certain audience but a little less would be just as good. The initial story telling outside of the sexual encounters starts out very good. Later in the novel the plot gets muddy and there is a lot of detail crammed into only a few pages. I would have preferred more character development. I want to relate to the characters on a more first person singular basis.

I love a happy ending and this does not disappoint. I look forward to more novels and seeing the growth of the writer.

An enjoyable read and unique premise.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great world building, interesting characters, some romance, magic, and a lot of paranormal creatures. 1 mars 2014

I enjoyed this a great deal. Love the fantasy setting, the magic system, the many varied characters, and the detail given to the world the characters inhabit.

What kept this from being a perfect 5 for me was the length and some editing issues (typos mainly).

I just felt that it could have been longer. I actually wanted to see Raffe's training during the months that were skipped. And it would have been nice to see the growth of his bond with Alrin during that period, and also the rest of the Princes of the Blood. It just seemed like a waste to go into such detail about this fantastic world inhabited by the characters and only spend a short time in it. The pacing was also a bit fast which I think might have been due to this originally being a serialized story.

Having said that, though, I did love the story. I liked Raffe from the time he was introduced, and Alrin... He's a dragon. I love him by default. They were actually quite sweet together.

I was a bit worried that there was a sex scene so early on (first chapter!), and quite a bit more detailed compared to what I'm used to from the author, but, have no fear, this is not PWP. If you're looking for a short read with likable characters, an interesting fantasy world filled with vampires, demons, dragoons, paladins, high priests, even some shifters, dredknights, necromancers, wraiths, deadwalkers, mermaids, sirens, and even angels, then you might want to check this out. There are 2 more books in this series that haven't been released. From the descriptions, those are prequels focusing on two of the other Princes in this story.

I also want to point out for people interested in this book who are not residing in the USA to check the listed price on the publisher's website before buying as it appears that Amazon adds $2 to the price for some countries. They do that sometimes (quite randomly) and this is one of those books.... So, if you see that the price is more than $6.99, then you might want to buy this from Less Than Three Press Book Market.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Loved this world 21 février 2014

Megan Derr has created an astonishing world , filled with vampires, dragons and zombies, sorcerers, and werewolves. This world has it all. I loved it. It also has an underappreciated accountant named Raffe' , who by taking his brothers place to become a blood prince, finds his place in the world. Raffe' becomes a force to be reckoned with , and finds true love because of his sacrifice. Poor Raffe' was an unassuming, unattractive man before the change, no one looked at him twice. Not even his family loved him, but into this new world the people, and beings could look past the physical to see the real man. It was the best thing that could have happened to him, although his and "Cambron's" love was a forbidden love, it was the only love he had ever experienced. His fellow princes called him brother, and he was happy. Raffe' had to work for his HEA though, there is evil and treachery in his new world. The blood princes rarely live to an old age, and with someone trying to raise the demons that almost destroyed the world hundreds of years ago , it isn't looking good for Raffe' and Cambron either. At 3315 locations and an amazing world and well fleshed out characters, I highly recommend this book! I hope there is a sequel there is still so much to tell about the inhabitants of this world.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 4.5 stars - Fascinating novel 24 février 2014

This review can be found at The Blogger Girls review site.

Wow, this book was just… amazing. From the beginning I was intrigued by the tale Ms. Derr was weaving but as the story progressed, I became more and more engrossed in the dangerous world that harbors so many varied but deadly creatures.

I can’t even begin to describe just what that world is so I will leave you to find out. What I will say is that this book contains a lot of different elements: a wish granted, a night of debauchery, hidden strengths and developing friendships and love. Not to mention there’s an evil-being right in the Legion’s mix, chaos reigning everywhere and so many loyal, faithful beings dying to stop such evilness with sacrifices and an ultimate bond that just might not be enough to save everyone. Now, if all that doesn’t intrigue you… well, I don’t know what will!

One of the reasons I enjoy fantasy is because of the worlds that are created. Ms. Derr is one of my favorite fantasy writers because even with how many books she’s written, they all still seem to be different and unique. This one is no different and is so elaborate that there are layers upon layers of how this world became and how it operates. For someone like me, it’s extremely captivating and I loved reading every single detail about the war that ravaged the countries and ultimately made it into what it is now.

At the same time, the characters were just as fascinating. At first, Raffé is a bitter but self-loathing individual who only sacrifices himself so that he and his family won’t be killed. After his Blooding, he takes to his position as a Prince of the Blood remarkably well. He was like the ugly duckling that became a beautiful swan. He changes so much over the course of the book that by the end, he is barely like his old self but he’s better now: aggressive, sure of himself, a warrior.

Cambord (which isn’t his real name but I don’t want to give that away) is first attracted to Raffé when he’s an ugly duckling but grows more enamored with the Princeling as the story goes on to the point that his obsessive, possessive behavior becomes dangerous to everyone. Honestly, I loved this because even though Cambord was dangerous, he was only deadly to those who threatened his Prince. I couldn’t get enough of it and the soul-deep bond they created and if I could change anything, I would just ask for a little more time that Raffé and Cambord had together.

My only issue with the story (and the reason I can’t give it 5 stars) is that there were so many different creatures, so many secondary characters, so much power I couldn’t keep it all straight. Whenever someone was brought it, I would think I understood their role in the Legion but then they’d do something that would make me think they weren’t the creature I thought they were supposed to be. It was a little overwhelming. Also, I still was confused on how the villain was able to open so many seals when he was leagues away from the sacrificial sites. Beyond that, there were a few inconsistencies throughout the text. For example, the mention that someone ‘stood abruptly’ when they were already standing or during one sex scene – ‘reaching around Raffé’ when Raffé was initially on his back with no mention of him turning over. It happened enough times for me to notice but not enough to dim my enjoyment – just worth a mention.

In the end, when I finished the book, I couldn’t help but give a satisfied sigh. It was a great book that had me worried at times things wouldn’t work out but also giddy when certain events took place. I went through a wide range of emotions while reading Of Last Resort and honestly, that right there is what made this book so amazing. It’s not often that a story literally pulls so many emotions from me. If you’re a fantasy lover and you enjoy characters that evolve greatly with a lot of action and suspense, give this one a try because I doubt you’ll be disappointed with it.
