Présentation de l'éditeur

Restoration Agriculture reveals how to sustainably grow perennial food crops that can feed us in our resource-compromised future.
How our food is produced is too often overlooked in the quest to get it into our mouths. Around the globe most people get their calories from “annual” agriculture. The majority of the carbohydrates, proteins and oils that feed humanity are from annual plants; those that grow fast for one season, produce lots of seeds, then die. Rice, wheat and corn are all seeds from annual plants. But human cultures have only relied upon annual plant seeds as staple food crops for 10,000 years. In addition to requiring ceaseless labor, annual plants have carried with them another curse. Every single human society that has relied on annual crops as staple foods in their diet has collapsed.
The restoration agriculture system described in this award-winning book works! It is possible for humans to produce staple foods using perennial agricultural ecosystems that actually improve the quality of the environment. This can be done on a backyard, farm or ranch scale and is needed right now — on a global scale.
Restoration Agriculture explains how we can have all of the benefits of natural, perennial ecosystems and create agricultural systems that imitate nature in form and function while still providing for our food, building, fuel and many other needs. Using the restoration agriculture system, an oak savanna mimic will produce more than twice the number of edible human calories per acre as an average acre of corn, never needs to be planted again, prevents erosion, creates oil, and can be managed with no fossil fuel inputs. This book, based on real-world practices, presents an alternative to the agriculture system of eradication and offers exciting hope for our future.

Mark Shepard's book is entertaining and readable. It provides clear examples of real-life practices for cold-climate permaculturists, whether a professional farmer or not. Yes, Shepard comes at the topic of permaculture from the standpoint of a farmer looking to transition from "Big Ag" methods to a sustainable alternative, and makes a great case for making the switch. But a clear picture with ideas to try are included that any gardener, homesteader or permaculture designer will find useful. Shepard presents ideas for producing food and other products sustainably, beyond organic, that can take place on any size agricultural acreage.

It's a fun read. For instance, did you know there is a movement to reintroduce very large mammals into the North American ecosystems, like elephants? There are lots of interesting tidbits and anecdotes, told in a witty, conversational voice.

At the same, time, Shepard successfully portrays the extremely serious, accelerating death spiral of current agricultural practices. It was the first time I was really struck with the full truth of what is happening and where we are heading if we don't change how we farm.

As a student in Geoff Lawton's online Permaculture Design Course, I am finding in retrospect that Shepard worked the principles of permaculture into the text in a very digestible form. Now as I learn about the foundations of permaculture, I think of this book and think, oh, that's why he did that!

I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in sustainably farming or gardening in a cold climate, and believe it is essential to any permaculture designer.

Excellent look at making permaculture on the commercial level. I only wish there was more how to and less rehashing of why we need to convert to a more sustainable process of food production.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. This book should be a prime source for ecology/ science teachers. There is a lot of good science inside. As a hobby gardener, this book makes so much sense! Wow!

Mark has laid out some basics for doing polycultural food production that is also ecological restoration. Overall great book. My main frustration was regarding food staples discussed, though. From the standpoint of human biology, it is not a good idea to be eating very many nuts, acorns, and so forth. They are not good means to get protein, fat or nutrition. Using techniques found in this book to grow fruits and animal foods is generally a great idea though.

Terrific book! Mark Shepard has much to teach on the nuts and bolts of how to make permaculture woke in a real world setting. Not only how to make your garden thrive, but how to produce multiple crops per acre on a commercial footing. With less work and expense and no fertilizer or pesticides! Please read this book! The whole world needs to get a hold of this picture of agriculture.
