Superbe album de Pokey Lafarge, qui est le seul à faire ce style de musique mêlant le blue grass, le blues, le jazz avec un zeste de modernité.
Le Top.

New music for an old soul 10 avril 2010

I had the good fortune to be walking around Pike Place Market in Seattle last year, and as I approached the park at the far end, I heard strains of music that beckoned and pulled me in. I hung out in the park for quite a while and listened to Pokey LaFarge and the South CIty Three. I'm delighted that they've put out a new album. Pokey is a young man with an old soul. These guys are skilled, versatile musicians and Pokey is a charismatic entertainer. They hail from St Louis but spend most of the year criss-crossing the US bringing their brand of Riverboat Soul to those of us unfortunate enough not to have been born by the banks of the Mississippi. Their music harkens back to an older time but with a new sensibility--- more like alt-roots folk/blues than just trying to re-create a bygone era. Hard to describe, really, but no one is making music now like Pokey and the boys. Give them a listen. Also check out Pokey's excellent Beat, Move, and Shake. And if they play a small venue in your area, go see them live. You'll be glad you did.

A music CD tribute to the ragtime and jug bands of the Mississippi River and Missouri culture 16 avril 2010
Par Midwest Book Review - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Riverboat Soul is a music CD tribute to the ragtime and jug bands of the Mississippi River and Missouri culture. Performed on instruments ranging from the guitar, gitjo, kazoo and harmonica to upright bass, slide guitar, fiddle, and more, Riverboat Souls' performers capture the plucky spirit of bands in the days of yore and is sure to delight anyone who enjoys catchy brewed-from-scratch songs. A pure treat for fans of the genre, Riverboat Soul is highly recommended. The tracks are "La La Blues", "Claude Jones", "Won't Make Love at All", "Hard Times Come and Go", "Two-Faced Tom", "You Don't Want Me", "Sweet Potato Blues", "Bag of Bones", "In the Graveyard Now", "Migraines and Heartpains", "Old Black Dog", and "Daffodil Blues".

Riverboat Soul is a fun, energetic CD that will have you up and dancing in no time! I just returned from a trip to Rhode Island where I caught Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three live at the Newport Folk Festival...they travel all over the US and Europe. If you get a chance to see them live you should definitely do so...if not, you will find yourself playing their CDs over and over, wishing you could see them live!

Great music, great musicians 13 septembre 2013

Hard to pigeon hole this band because they are both original and also reminiscent of genres we love. It occurred to me tonight that they remind a bit of Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappeli and that great hot swing but they also remind of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys and then again of some really great old blues performers and then again..... well, they're just a great band! They're not copying and mimicking; they're original and yet their music is a "nod" to other music (some of which as mentioned) we've long loved. We purchased this CD and some others and like every single one of them, not a bad word to say about any of the choices, and highly recommend them to others.

We saw Pokey LaFarge and his band perform last night at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston and wow, they were outstanding! The band has two new members, a woman who plays wind and brass instruments - plays fabulous clarinet! - and a man who plays horns (trumpet, trombone) just marvelously! They had just come back from a European tour, appeared recently on David Letterman's show and were making their first U.S. tour stop in Charleston, Illinois and the full house at EIU loved them! We recently bought several of their CDs here at Amazon in advance of the concert and really like their music a lot. It is only enhanced by seeing them live because each individual band member and the band as a unit has great stage presence. Go see them if you have the chance and buy their CDs, no matter what. Great band, great music. REALLY talented musicians and a lot of fun to see in person but also much pleasure in the listening to their CDs. At the concert, there were also vinyl records of various sizes, including 78 rpm, as well as CDs. They played many of the selections from their new CD and this one, as well as other of their familiar and delightful songs, almost all of which were written by Pokey Lafarge alone or with others. The band is just terrific, all of them superb musicians and each a lot of fun on the stage, too.

Raw Americana 10 février 2013

Pokey and the Lads steal old melodies, overlay old-time lyrics with a modern vibe and somehow produce a raw but top-notch production. Not an easy task. I love the whole feeling of this album. Like they just fell into the studio, unpacked, tuned and did 1 take of each song. Immediate and vital music with direct links to old-time music. It's no coincidence that you'll be tapping your foot thinking, "I know that melody!". Pokey--like Woody, Bob, and all the real American Folkies--has no problem shop-lifting old tunes. Like the oral poets, he even lifts a few well-known phrases, but crafts them into something new and very entertaining. Highly recommended.
