Ben Hatch makes me laugh more and more (John Cleese)

Magnifique! (Terry Wogan)

Ben Hatch is a very funny writer. His work is fresh and heartfelt (David Jason)

A French odyssey to rival the greatest adventures in history - if you like jokes, and a car full of cheese. Funny and touching (Danny Wallace)

Highly recommended to anyone holidaying in France this year. Or to anyone holidaying anywhere. Or to anyone holidaying with kids. Or to anyone with kids but no holiday plans. Basically to anyone with a sense of humour (Sunday Express)

Although Hatch's writing strength is in absurd comedy, there's a heart-warming spirit underpinning the book, that of the sheer joy of tackling what life throws at you as a united team and spending time together as a family. (Daily Mail)

I am going to shout this very loudly. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK. The funniest travel memoir you will read this year. Ben Hatch is a genius. The funny bits were so funny. The sad bits were so sad (Lisa Jewell)

Parents will either roar with laughter or roll their eyes with recognition at this family road-trip memoir (Metro)

Goes from one hilarious situation to another. Very entertaining. The author is naturally funny (The Sun)

Fantastically funny and touching. I laughed and winced and will never look at baguettes in the same way again (Sophie Kinsella)

I loved Ben Hatch's funny, honest, touching memoir (Jenny Colgan)

A lovely, funny, scary adventure (Tim Brooke-Taylor)

Haven't laughed as much in ages (Mike Gayle)

A funny, poignant tale of life and surviving it (Guardian)

Présentation de l'éditeur

Ben Hatch is on the road again. Commissioned to write a guidebook about France (despite not speaking any French) he sets off with visions of relaxing chateaux and refined dining. Ten thousand miles later his family's been attacked by a donkey, had a run-in with a death-cult and, after a near drowning and a calamitous wedding experience involving a British spy, his own marriage is in jeopardy. A combination of obsessions about mosquitoes, French gravel and vegetable theme parks mean it's a bumpy ride as Ben takes a stand against tyrannical French pool attendants, finds himself running with the bulls in Pamplona and almost starring in a snuff movie after a near fatal decision to climb into a millionaire's Chevrolet Blazer.
Funny and poignant, Road to Rouen asks important questions about life, marriage and whether it's ever acceptable to tape baguette to your children's legs to smuggle lunch into Disneyland Paris.

This turned out to be a dissection of his hapless relationship by one of the most ill-prepared and apparently gormless British tourist I have had the sorry fortune to come across. More information about your trip, fewer dull maunderings about your personal circumstances wouold have been welcome.

Thank goodness this was cheap, as suggested, self indulgent rubbish from a product of the socialist BBC state. No doubt some form of highly paid employment will be found for him at the BBC when he has finished having fun. The shame is that his kids will grow up brainwashed into the entitled state of grace the well off left exist in.

Thanks for the trip Ben 17 janvier 2014
Par Paul J Adderley - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
Ben Hatch's 'Road to Rouen' had me giggling from the first chapter as we join his family on another balmy road trip. Ben and his family embark on a three month trip around France and anyone who has ever completed a road trip with young children would know that there is an extreme level of insanity in even contemplating a trip like this. Throw in turtles, buggy smuggler, MI5, a midlife crisis and you have a recipe for a disaster.
While 'Road to Rouen' provides you with a lot of laughs Ben allows us real access to himself and his family. Their ups and downs, the laughs the tears, the arguments and reconciliations. Ben paints a brutally honest, warts and all, picture of himself and, honestly' his behaviour sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. He shares his real love for his family through snippets into his past, his mother, father, brother and the early years with Dinah.
As we travel around France with Ben, wife Dinah and children Phoebe and Charlie you find so much about them but it also draws out your own travel memories, good and bad. Phoebe and Charlie are too young at the moment to understand the value of the experiences they are gaining but they are cementing memories that they will cherish for the rest of their lives.
I didn't want to read the last page as I really didn't want the trip to be over. I really hope that Ben did not put in the application he received and that we get the opportunity to join the family on another road trip.
Thanks for the trip Ben

Laugh out loud funny with a few tears thrown in 3 novembre 2013

It is rare that you find a book that can draw comparisons to both your childhood and your adulthood. This book does that. There were moments that it reminded me in the best way of the halcyon days of my youth and those month long vacations we took as a children. My sister & I in the back of the wagoneer. My dad playing the same tape over and over for thousands of miles and all we had was a deck of cards and a few books to amuse us. Then I turned the page and I was certain that Ben had ridden shotgun on my most recent family vacation

Ben does an excellent job of capturing those moments when we are all a little less than proud of ourselves and yet somehow turn those into heartwarming lessons that let you know you are definitely not alone in those more manic moments of your life. Anyone who has ever had that thought that maybe they don't have it all figured out will appreciate this journey. For those of you actually have it all figured out, read it anyway so you can see how the rest of us live.

What annoying people 5 juillet 2013

The book is touted as amusing. It isn't. Two adults and two kids--and the adults are not the ones you'd expect--set off on a road trip through France with the purpose of producing a guidebook for those traveling with children. The wife can't read maps or drive, and the husband seems to be on the verge of a breakdown. You just want to smack them both. The only mature ones in the car are the two children. I couldn't wait for the trip to end.

A great read! 12 janvier 2014

As someone who has experienced many a family holiday in France, I gave in to all the chatter on twitter about this book, and was so glad I did. I loved it - it's witty, poignant and downright hilarious in equal measure. Anyone who's travelled in France with kids, especially watching the pennies, will understand. It's also an honest account of a couple's relationship and the ups and downs they have experienced in life as a family. Reading about Dinah at the wheel negotiating the Arc de Triomph had me giggling uncontrollably - feeling just a little uncomfortable at the same time (having been there myself). A great read. Well done Mr Hatch.
