Ohhhh, I'm already counting the days until the next book. This book was so engrossing and so good, I was very captivated. I was eager to know what would happen next and could not put the book down. You just have to love AJ, she is so normal and real. A very good debut book, and a good start to a series!

I received an ARC of this book.

Kept My Interest ... Want To See What Happens Next 15 juillet 2011

I've always like dark, thunderous skies, so I was drawn to this cover by that alone. The lady on the cover could be a representation of AJ, the main character, or the author herself ... it's up to you to interpret it. =)

Plot/Main Characters

AJ is a single mother who has had to learn the hard way how to take care of her son. She doesn't even have the help of her family ... whether it's emotional, financial, physical, etc. She is a woman on her own. Her son's father, Cole, hasn't been around since David's birth. Is this by choice? By circumstance?

Speaking of circumstances, they lead AJ back to her hometown, a place she hasn't visited in ten years. She's determined that David become united with his father and she, AJ, is determined to change things between her parents and herself. However, her parents seem to be as unresponsive and dismissive as ever. Will they ever come around? What caused them to be this way? How could parents ignore their very own daughter like she's not of their own flesh and blood?

While deciding whether or not to stay in Scotia permanently, AJ lands a job that puts her, her son and her long lost love in danger. With a renewed determination to set things right for her son's sake, AJ takes on the biggest, baddest man in town ... with the help of her new boss.

Full of twists, turns, discoveries, disappointments, regrets, hope, friendship and more, this book is a powerful story of one woman's fight to create a safer world for, not only her son, but for everybody in her hometown.

Despite the ending, which I understood but did not like (it disappointed me as a person, not a reader), this is a pretty great book. Well-written, engaging and fast-paced, I would be willing to read this book again. I'm also interested in what's going to happen next for AJ and David.

This book would be a great recommendation for those who enjoy stories where good triumphs evil, mysteries and stories with not-so-happy, but realistic, endings. =)

When Angela Joy Palladino and her nine-year-old son return to her hometown of Scotia, West Virginia, she has very mixed feelings. Memories of her flight from this same town ten years before are almost enough to keep her from going there.

But she is desperate. Her past success as an environmental activist has been clouded by a recent media disaster.

What will Angela (A.J.) find when she shows up on her parents' doorstep? And what recent events will torpedo the job she hoped to begin here? And what lies and secrets will she uncover?

From the very opening pages of this story full of mystery, suspense, and possible danger, the reader is treated to the tough feistiness of A. J., and the awesome strength, intelligence, and openness to life's possibilities of her disabled son David.

Erin Brockovich's environmental activism shines throughout the pages, and the fictional elements were captivating and true-to-life. I liked how the story unfolded from the alternate perspectives of the characters, like A. J.; Elizabeth (an attorney); and David. The story revealed itself almost in slow motion at times, creating more suspense, especially toward the end as the danger escalated.

On the other hand, some of the language felt awkward, or like an attempt at down-home humor. For example: "The tug-of-war in my stomach was a tractor pull pitting an eighteen wheeler against a Panzer tank."

These similes peppered the pages of [ROCK BOTTOM] BY Brockovich, Erin (Author) Vanguard Press (publisher) Hardcover, distracting me at times. Otherwise, this book was incredible, and as the first in a series, it offers an ongoing journey with these characters. Four stars.

Rock Bottom 9 février 2012

The Review: Let's begin with this: Rock Bottom is every bit the environmental soap box that I expected it to be. It's not that I object to an overall theme or a novel that attempts to teach - there are plenty of books that do a very good job of that sort of thing. This one however, attempted to accomplish its end by embracing a nauseating number of clichés. Most of those clichés came in the form of the supporting cast of characters and their respective deeds. Everyone, it seemed, in this book was selfishly spraying toxins, stripping mountains, polluting water, causing lung disease, poisoning children. The smart ones were evil, greedy moguls. The "common people" opposed to environmental activism were gun-wielding, mono-syllabic rednecks acting solely out of uninformed, unintelligent fear. The only woman opposed to environmental goodness was cold, calculating, hard, overly ambitious... and sterile. Of course. AJ, however, is an admirable character - tough, smart, no-nonsense - and undyingly devoted to her special-needs son. I actually really liked AJ and think that she makes an interesting protagonist, even if her hard-as-nails self was reduced to righteous tears at every sight and report of environmental abuse. She is well-rounded and well-developed enough to make a respectable central character for an entire series... and there are apparently more AJ Palladino books to come.

So that's what I didn't like about Rock Bottom. If, however, we tease out the portions that undoubtedly originated with Ms. Brockovich and examine the story's bones - which I imagine are probably the work of Ms. Lyons - we do have a pretty decent whodunit here. The book begins with a suspicious death, later confirmed to be murder, and there is an abundance of shady, greedy, probable suspects in the mix. The action moves fast and there are plenty of attempts on our heroine's life and the lives of those who fight with her, which serve to keep the story moving at break-neck speed. Bigotry and hostility abound in the town of AJ's youth, it seems. Without risking spoilers, there is more than one bad guy in their midst and the mystery takes a twisting turn or two before its climax. The coal-mining mountain community in the hills of West Virginia is well described and the natural beauty there is a well drawn backdrop for the characters' struggles.

The Bottom Line: Overall, fans of fast-paced suspense novels will probably enjoy Rock Bottom, assuming that they don't mind being lectured to along the way.

Gripping and realistic...Brilliantly written 29 novembre 2011

Ten years ago, Erin Brockovich's story hit the silver screen, touching hearts and bringing environmental causes front and center in most households. Erin's strength and passion for doing the right thing only added to my need to read this amazing debut thriller. My main concern was, "Will this book be as powerful as her life story was in theaters?" The answer is, YES!

Angela Joy Palladino, environmental activist, comes home to Scotia, West Virginia, with her tail between her legs, hoping for a fresh start and a good life for her beloved son, David. What awaits her is an environmental catastrophe that is closer to home than any case she's handled before. With a job lined up, A.J. a.k.a. "The People's Champion," is ready to dive back into the legal world with the town's local attorney. Before she knows it, her boss is dead. David's dad is still in Scotia, and trouble is brewing on the mountaintops. Will "The People's Champion" settle the score in Scotia or will Scotia send her packing?

Brockovich's debut novel was absolutely astonishing. It was more than I could have ever imagined possible. The characters and plot were larger than life and insanely realistic. The level of detail and care put into not only the characters but the environmental issues made Rock Bottom a thrilling read. A.J.'s character does seem a bit familiar. Erin Brockovich emanates from the main character as if they are one person. This made A.J. more realistic and easier to connect with.

Overall, this is a powerful story that blends family, the environmental and the legal world together. In the beginning, I was sure I knew who the guilty party was, but I was dead wrong. The pace of the novel was great, keeping me engaged in the plot and characters to the very last page. I highly recommend this amazingly passionate debut novel to all readers.
