Includes Over 100 Minutes of Audio Examples
150 Exercises in Standard Notation and Tab

The long awaited follow up to bestselling CAGED System and 100 Licks for Blues Guitar, Rock Guitar Un-CAGED expands the popular concept to cover rock guitar vocabulary and lines. Rock Guitar Un-CAGED includes 100 original rock guitar licks based around the 5 CAGED system shapes, 100 minutes of free audio downloads so you can hear what you’re learning, and full explanations of how to open up the whole guitar neck in any key, in any position, it is the Complete Rock Guitar Soloing Course.

Original and Usable Rock Guitar Vocabulary

There are 25 Licks based around the 4 most common rock guitar scales; The Blues Scale, The Aeolian Mode, The Lydian Mode and the Mixolydian Mode. With 5 licks based around each of the 5 fretboard positions you always have great lines to play wherever you are on the guitar neck. Each lick is demonstrated with a professionally recorded example track so you know what sound you’re aiming for.

Audio Samples

Check out the audio samples on

Learn the Guitar Fretboard in a Creative, Fun Way.

Each of the 5 scale patterns for each mode is taught around the CAGED system. This simple system helps you easily relate each scale pattern to an individual chord shape anchor. By relating your scales and licks to these anchors you can easily play any scale or lick, in any position and in any key by simply shifting the anchor. Each chapter includes extensive exercises to increase your vision of the guitar neck wherever you are, or whatever you’re playing. Of course, each exercise is also included as an audio track too.

Backing Tracks

Practice your licks and exercises with 14 Backing tracks. There are 8 backing tracks to correspond with the fretboard vision exercises, and 6 fun and groovy backing tracks by Guitar Techniques Magazine’s very own Quist. You will lose yourself for hours playing your new rock guitar licks with these excellent backing tracks.

After shelving my classic guitar obsession for 30 years to pursue an academic career, in the past year I have renewed my music interest big-time, bought an electric guitar (PRS) and shelled out hundreds of dollars on method books to explore rock, blues and jazz. This book is definitely one of the two or three best I've come across, and for me, it is becoming the route to serious progress and improvement. Very well written, logical, and comprehensive.

Joseph Alexander's Rock Guitar Un-CAGED method is a unique and absolutely ingenious way of breaking down the neck of the guitar to help his students understand the musical structure behind the scales that are common to playing rock guitar (although this concept can be applied to any type of music). I've struggled to learn and understand rock guitar licks but since purchasing this book I've learned more in a week than I had in the previous six months. This book is definitely worth 10 times the cost of admission.

This review applies to the Kindle version of the book. The topics, writing, and explanations given in the book are top notch. However, the execution of this book as a Kindle book is a failure.

The author's writing style is very enjoyable. There is a good balance between written material and exercises. The overall arc of the book from introduction, to basic fundamentals, to explorations in various modes is enjoyable. I especially like how scales over different parts of the neck are then covered on one position on the neck.

The electronic book is a mess and needs to be re-released. The audio examples are not integrated into the book. You must download them separately. One path for the text to get to your Kindle and a completely different path for the audio.

Whether you use Kindle reader on a Windows desktop PC or a Mac iPad, you cannot play the audio examples from the Kindle app. The examples are not linked, so you must juggle two apps (Kindle and your audio player) to follow a lesson. Other Kindle books that are better have audio players right in the middle of the text.

Good luck finding those audio examples. Many of the figures have 4 or 5 examples in one audio file, so if you want to play example 3D, it is embedded 80% of the way in a file "Audio Example 3A-3E".

The audio examples are extremely low volume. Please normalize them so they are the same volume as all my other music.

The fretboard diagrams are not crisp. This is especially noticeable when any diagram is magnified (double-tap) on the iPad. Some of the text in the diagrams is nearly unreadable. It seems like they were saved as fuzzy JPG rather than crisp PNG. JPGs are good for photos. PNGs are better for diagrams.

I give this review in a spirit of improving future editions of this book. I hope more attention is paid to the usability and publishing details of the author's work.

Very informative and well written; clearly lays out lays both overarching concepts and specific details. Has helped me greatly in reinforcing aspects I learned years ago as well as learn many new things. It does take some practice (not surprisingly) to truly grasp the material, but well worth it once you do. One of the clearest and most useful guitar instruction books I've ever seen. Will help you learn scales and incorporate them into your playing. Would absolutely recommend it to others. Well done, Mr. Alexander.
