Présentation de l'éditeur

To Bill Janovitz, all artists reveal themselves through their work and the Rolling Stones are no different. Each exposes a little more of their soul. Written by Stones fanatic, musician, and writer Bill Janovitz, this is a song-by-song chronicle that maps the landmarks of the band's career while expanding upon their recording and personal history through insightful and energetic prose. With its conversational tone - much like friends pouring over old records on a Saturday afternoon - the book presents the musical leaps taken by the band and a discussion of how the lyrical content both reflected and influenced popular culture. The song choices - fifty in all - are chronological and subjective. Most of them are the classic hits, however, the book digs deeper into beloved album tracks and songs with unique stories behind them. Rocks Off is the ultimate listening guide and thinking man's companion that will spur readers to dust off those old albums and listen in with a newfound perspective on one of the most famous and acclaimed rock'n'roll bands of all time.

I have purchased at least 100 books from Amazon.com over the years and this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review. I am a major collector of Rolling Stones memorabilia and have well over 100 books on the band. I have not read all of them, but this book stands out as one of the very best of them all. The author obviously knows a lot about the band's history and is a talented writer, but what makes it really interesting reading is his ability to analyze each song with such strong knowledge of other factors going on in the music world and the world at large at the time each song was written and released. If any of the Stones themselves happen to read this book, I think they would approve and agree with most all of it. Great job!!

Great execution of an interesting idea: tell the story of the Rolling Stones through 50 essays on 50 of their songs.

Die-hard Stones fan Janovitz deftly combines musical knowledge (Keith doesn't play on Sway?) with well-researched details on the band's personal lives to cover the band's entire history from their early single Tell Me through A Bigger Bang. As Janovitz writes, it would have been easy to stop in 1971 and focus on the biggest hits and their golden years. But some of the most interesting stuff in the book is the awkward years after that: their relationship to punk and disco, their efforts to stay culturally relevant, and the look at how a legendary band slides into their twilight years while trying to maintain the swagger of their youth.

Highly recommended if you are a fan of the Stones or a fan or good music writing.

With the amount of comprehensive scholarship already existing on the Stones catalog, it would seem a quixotic, if not utterly futile task to arrive at much in the way of new and revelatory insights into the best rock band to ever make the rounds. Solving this equation is the principle achievement of Bill Janovitz's terrific new history of the band, which intriguingly recasts their story through an expert and detailed account of fifty of their most vital recordings, providing both valuable details about the sessions themselves as well as their context within the groups different eras. As a highly accomplished singer/songwriter in the great Buffalo Tom, Janovitz is uniquely qualified to assess the unique digressions, risks and concessions that have comprised the Stones fascinating trajectory. The net result is a wonderful and novel history of these rock titans which serves both as a great introduction to newcomers and a welcome addendum to Stones completists. Highly recommended.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 I really enjoyed reading this 23 avril 2015

I really enjoyed reading this. It's a great bathroom book, Janovitz gives you a good idea of what the band may have been going through when they recorded some of their finest tracks. I can't argue with his selections either; with so many to choose from, he did a nice job picking songs. There is no continuous narrative, but you can still get a feel for the trajectory of the Stones, and of the fusion and friction of the Jagger/Richards partnership. It's mainly just a fun book to read a song at a time. If you want the history of the band, or just some juicy stories, there are better books, but if you want an idea of the atmosphere they recorded in, and how the songs came together, this is worth your time.

Very enjoyable read. Obviously one wishes there were certain songs Mr. Janovitz would have covered (more of the Mick Taylor years and less of the later stuff for me personally) but there's only so much a writer can do and in trying to give a representative look over the length of the band's career, this book does an admirable job. I like how Janovitz mixes in both musical and historical information in relatively equal measures. It's surprising to learn how often the actual Stones did not play on certain records! All in all, a nice refererence book.
