5.0 étoiles sur 5 Beautiful color plates and a thorough biography of this artist 10 octobre 2012
Par E. A. Lovitt - Publié sur
Rogier van der Weyden (1399/1400 - 1464) is one of the central figures of early Northern European painting, along with Jan van Eyck (ca. 1390/1400 - 1441). According to this author, "Rogier's figures and compositions left such a mark on the work of artists over the next three generations that he can be justly be described as the most influential painter of the 15th century."

This large (10.5"x12.5") book with its dense text and multiple full-color plates is a thorough introduction by an author who specializes in medieval art, particularly the panel painting and illumination of the 14th and 15th centuries north of the Alps. However, nothing can substitute for the actual experience of coming across one of van der Weyden's paintings in person, which happened to me for the first time in the Groeninge Museum in Bruges. Although I'm not particularly interested in religious art, the colors and groups of solemn figures caught me up like no other painting in the museum. It was like seeing Bach's St. Matthew's Passion crystallized in paint. The gentle virgins and chubby little babies of the Italian Renaissance are beautiful, but the Northern European paintings by artists such as van der Weyden exemplify Christianity, most especially Protestantism.

On a later trip to the Musée Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune, France I saw van der Weyden's Last Judgement alterpiece, and was completely enthralled by this artist.

In a book this size (140 pages) the author was also able to include paintings attributed to the 'workshop of Rogier van der Weyden,' 'painter of the circle of Rogier van der Weyden,' and 'successor of Rogier van der Weyden.' There are also full-color plates of tapestries, illuminated manuscripts, and paintings by van der Weyden's contemporaries such as Stephan Lochner and Jan van Eyck.

It is easy to lose oneself amongst the color plates in this book, but do not neglect the text which includes detailed discussions of the individual paintings, and a thorough overview of early Netherlandish art. We also own the Time-Life Library of Art, and this book fills in a gap in the Time-Life series, which doesn't really delve into the Northern European artists until it enters "The World of Durer."
