Présentation de l'éditeur

What is Romanticism? In this Very Short Introduction Michael Ferber answers this by considering who the romantics were and looks at what they had in common -- their ideas, beliefs, commitments, and tastes. He looks at the birth and growth of Romanticism throughout Europe and the Americas, and examines various types of Romantic literature, music, painting, religion, and philosophy. Focusing on topics, Ferber looks at the 'Sensibility' movement, which preceded Romanticism; the rising prestige of the poet; Romanticism as a religious trend; Romantic philosophy and science; Romantic responses to the French Revolution; and the condition of women. Using examples and quotations he presents a clear insight into this very diverse movement, and offers a definition as well as a discussion of the word 'Romantic' and where it came from. Informative Introduction to Romanticism 14 novembre 2010
Par Dr. Bojan Tunguz - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
Romanticism refers to the variety of primarily artistic movements that spanned the end of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century. It is a very broad development, and many have argued if it refers to just a single trend or a variety of different ones that had only in retrospect been conflated by later critics. Nonetheless, a single classification of various works in many artistic mediums as romantic has withstood the test of time. Even so, it can be dauntingly hard to have a single definition of romanticism that can be applied across the board.

This short introduction aims to introduce the reader to some of the most prominent romantic poets, writers, musicians and painters. It emphasizes certain themes that occur in many romantic works or amongst the romantics as a perception of themselves. Nonetheless, there is no single work that encompasses all of these different disparate themes.

The book is aimed at general readership, but it in no ways compromises the solid scholarly work that lays behind it. The reader will get a better sense of the time period and the cultural, philosophical, and historic forces that have shaped the romantic period. There are also numerous excerpt from the romantic poetry, which for the book of this size would need to suffice to give a flavor of this movement. The book contains several illustrations that show some of the more characteristic romantic paintings, but unfortunately due to the fact that all of them are reproduced in black and white in a very small format it is not possible to get a very good idea of the quality of these works.

Overall this is a very readable and informative short introduction to romanticism.

Useful overview of European romanticism 16 avril 2014
Par Jeanne Holland - Publié sur Amazon.com

It's too easy in an English course to limit one's understanding of romanticism to the Anglo-American versions of it. This informative, interesting book provides essential background information as to the roots of romanticism which developed in Europe.

The series is not very useful these days. I can get similar information at no cost from Wicki and other online sources.
