What's in store for you? How about no RSTP coverage. None. Nada. Zip. It gets a passing mention and "leaves that to other certification exams". I've taken the test 3 times now and I can tell you it is VERY MUCH COVERED. Did you want to know how and where a DR/BDR elections takes place in OSPF? You won't find it in this book! Have fun guessing on the test!
As if that were not enough, there are glaring problems with many of the examples. The sections on HSRP and GLBP are hard to understand unless you understand the Virtual MACs for each protocol have a format that are followed so that you can always tell which one is the Virtual Mac. This text fails to mention that at all, while at the same time completely glossing over VRRP completely which is, again, covered by the exam.
The Pearson Test Software included in the book is fine, but in no way prepares you for what is actually on the test. You'll find yourself getting a migraine from elaborate, glorified True or False questions, questions about the effects of Split Horizon on a Frame Relay network which is not mentioned in the text at all. I can say that the database is updated frequently and my feedback questions have been responded to. By golly, yesterday they added an RSTP question to it!
If I sound like a broken record, it's because I've taken this exam 3 times. I've read the book cover to cover twice and I've found more from Cisco's website and Youtube when this book should have been it for me. I *BREEZED* through my ICND1 with the first text, but someone must have been asleep at their desk while this thing was being published. Missing topics, contradictions in the same sections, failure to elucidate on details that are crucial for understanding the output of commands has all left a terrible taste in my mouth. I can recommend this book as a good leg up on the required material, but please, please please, learn from my mistakes and buy a back-up text with tons of additional detail. Unless this book sees a second revision, I'm pretty much done with it.
Wast of time and money!!!
The additional material is important. I had the 1st edition of the book, but was frustrated by RSTP questions on Boson & Pearson practice exams. The exams on the CD receive updates, so RSTP questions were coming up even though the book didn't cover the topic. The exam linked to the website where the appendix on RSTP could be found.
I was particularly pleased to get a personal response from the author when I submitted feedback regarding a poorly written question on a practice exam. As someone who is learning networking completely outside a classroom environment, this book has been immensely useful, and Wendell Odom seems to genuinely want people to understand the material he covers.
