In Run or Die, Kilian Jornet takes us on a scenic tour of his great passion: competitive running. A world champion ultra-runner, Jornet has challenged himself on some of the most precarious and beautiful terrains the world has to offer. However, he remains mindful of the deeper philosophical implications of his actions by exploring why one runs and its parallels to everyday life experiences. In fact, this book concerns running as a sport and also a form of communing with nature. At times Jornet gives a bit too many races details, but he never loses sight of the majestic mountains, waterways, and flora that create the tone and atmosphere of each run. As running is a solitary sport, Jornet uses each run as an opportunity to commune with nature. Jornet's passion for both running and nature electrifies this book, compensating for its sometimes lack-luster writing and flimsy storyline. Although the book has some parts that I found myself skimming, there are some wonderful parts, especially his descriptions of pushing one's body to the brink of its physical limits.

Here we have the account of an unwaveringly devoted athlete of extraordinary magnitude. Run or Die is a decent read for anyone interested in endurance training. While recommended for hard core runners, better related reads are Born to Run and The Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei (arc), which conveys the truly amazing spiritual and physical endurance of sect of ultra marathon Buddhist monks, who quite literally run or die (in their search for enlightenment, they spend one 100 day period running 52+ miles a day).

I did love parts of it. Kilian Jornet is a star--an ultra runner, a ski mountaineer, he was just born to run in the mountains. I have nothing but great amounts of admiration for him--just an amazing, amazing athlete. As far as this book goes, like I said, I loved parts of it. The skyrunner's manifesto (a sort of prologue) where he talks about running until your legs are screaming with pain and you're on the verge of vomiting was fantastic--this is music to an endurance athlete's ears! I intend to read it every time I go trail running or mountain biking. I also enjoyed his narrative on the Western States 100, where after 99 miles the race was decided by almost an all-out sprint.

He has a very nice way with words. He mentions his need to be creative and has tried his hand at writing. He's not bad at it, but he's much better at running stupid distances in jaw droppingly beautiful locations. I thought the book was great at the beginning and the end--the middle was kind of an unstructured soup, and I found myself skimming a little. I do think it's worth a read if you're a fan or an endurance runner. It's quite short--about 145 pages, beginning to end. A good distraction the night before your next race.

If you follow ultrarunning at all, you're familiar with Kilian Jornet. He's only 25, but he has already won the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc 3 times, won Western States, and set the record for the ascent/descent of Mt. Kilimanjaro. He's a phenomenal runner and an inspiration to those who see him run.

Unfortunately, the inspiration has a hard time coming through in his new book, Run or Die. Reading Run or Die is certainly an interesting experience, essentially a stream-of-consciousness race report on some of Kilian's big runs: his trans-Pyrennes run, UTMB, WS (his first race there, when he came in third), and his Mt. Kilimanjaro run. We read the blow-by-blow of the runs, as well as his reflections on life and running.

For me, Run or Die misses the most important element of a running book: inspiring me to get up and run. Rather than feeling like, "Wow! That's a lot of running! I want to go run now!" I felt like "Hmm. That guy runs a lot. I don't think I can run like that. What's for dinner?" I realize this is more a reflection on me than on Kilian, but I have read plenty of running memoirs that inspire me to lace them up and head out the door.

Kilian will be fun to watch as his career continues. It seems like he has what it takes to dominate the sport of trail running for many years to come. I will be interested to read his next book, maybe 5-10 years down the road, when, I think, he'll have more to share.

At the 2010 Western States 100, Spanish phenom Kilian Jornet ran with the leaders of the race until virtually collapsing in the last 20 to 30 miles, eventually finishing third. Unbreakable, a documentary about that race, showed Jornet struggling at an aid station about 20 miles from the finish and, hours later, crossing the finish line, but it left a gap in between. What happened to Jornet during those last long hours on the course? How was he able to pull himself together and ultimately push the pace to more than 10 miles per hour in the final stretch to hold onto third place?

In Run or Die, Jornet's autobiography, which has just been released in the U.S., Jornet provides a first-person account of the many races and adventures that have made him famous, including the 2010 Western States. Many of these have been documented in Unbreakable and the online video series Kilian's Quest, such as his FKT on the Tahoe Rim Trail, the eight-day crossing of the Pyrenees, and his run up and down Mount Kilimanjaro. But while fans of ultrarunning may already be familiar with these stories, they have not yet had a glimpse into his mind as he conquers competitor after competitor, peak after peak.

The book reads much like an extended race report or journal entry, as it weaves fast-paced running narratives with Jornet's reflections about life, family, the environment, and even love. When looking at his accomplishments, it can be easy to forget that Jornet is only 25 years old, but the tenderness of his writing provides a reminder. He writes, for example, of his first love. The relationship ended, at least in part, because of his girlfriend's sense that Jornet cared too much about competition and winning and not enough about running or hiking for joy. Jornet admits that while she was strong enough to do things simply because they were worth doing, he needed to be told how well he had done--to measure himself by victories and trophies. He is honest about his competitive drive, conceding that his motivations for racing might be a sign of weakness, not strength. But he can't help himself. Some of this self-doubt is visible in Kilian's Quest, but it is much more prominent in Run or Die.

Of course, if you're looking for adrenaline-packed running sequences, don't worry: the book is not all coming-of-age tenderness. There are many accounts of his around-the-clock adventures. Watching an athlete as talented as Kilian, it is easy to wonder if he is ever in pain. The book makes clear that he feels the pain but simply refuses to yield. It is likewise easy to wonder if he is happy every morning as he wakes up about the prospect of a run. Again the book reveals him to be more human than he appears. When the alarm rings on the third day of his Pyrenees adventure, for example, he thinks "What on earth am I doing here? Why didn't I got for a `normal' run rather than torturing my body like this?"

While the storyline is rough, and might even be hard to follow for those unfamiliar with Jornet's recent adventures, the book is surprisingly successful in eliciting an emotional reaction, perhaps because the storytelling is so raw. It is also refreshingly agenda-free. It is the kind of book that you will want to read quickly and then hand to a friend, so that you can talk about it together. And, let's be honest, whether you ultimately love it or hate it, if call yourself a trail runner or ultrarunner or adventurer of any kind, you will want to read it simply to peak into the mind of one of the greatest endurance athletes of our time. Breaking records is no easy task but doing so with humility is an amazing achievement. Unlike traditional western athletes who can't shut up about themselves, Endurance runner Kilian Jornet never opens his mouth. In his brief but beautiful book, he avoids the traps of typical stardom by darting around any boastful details of his endeavors. Instead he describes the arduous depth of the terrain and his love for each challenge as he had experienced it. From running the Lake Tahoe Rim to traversing the Pyrenees mountains, this agile young man talks of adventures so exhausting they make a marathon look like a 5k warm-up.

While many have written books about the sport of running in its many forms, none have done it quite like this. Each paragraph is a question to the reader, a philosophical bounding off the rocks. Why do we run? Why do we push so hard in life and love? What will be our legacy after we have fallen? Where does the trail lead? Kilian does not attempt to provide the answers but he does inspire the reader to aim for that next peak and once there, he reminds us to enjoy the view.
