Présentation de l'éditeur

In Detail

SDL Trados Studio has a huge range of features that can be bewildering to the new user. Once properly understood, though, it can quickly become an indispensible part of the translator's toolkit, helping to make the process of translating, reviewing, and managing documents a great deal more efficient.

SDL Trados Studio: A Practical Guide aims to help you to get to grips with the power of SDL Trados Studio 2014 quickly and painlessly. This book addresses the practical issues that you encounter in your day to day work in the world of translation. It will help you with everything right from installation, creating translation memories to the final translations and managing translation memories.

The book is based on the latest, 2014 version of SDL Trados Studio. You will learn how to make the best use of SDL Trados Studio during each phase of the translation process, from creating translation memories, through translation, review, and billing for work. The book also covers a number of other features to help make your work more efficient, such as managing terminology, using projects to store translation settings and translate groups of files together, and managing and maintaining the material in translation memories.

Approach

This book breaks down the fundamental topics of SDL Trados Studio into clear, task-oriented steps that will help you apply them to your translation work speedily and efficiently.

Who this book is for

This book is designed both for new users and those who already have some knowledge of SDL Trados Studio. Its aim is to acquaint you with the key features of the program quickly and to help you enhance your knowledge through more in-depth exploration. No previous experience of translation memory programs is required, although it is assumed that readers will be comfortable working with standard MS Windows applications.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Concise and very user-friendly 20 juin 2014

This guide has been very well written and laid out in an orderly format. The screenshots are contextually suitable and inserted at sensible positions to further clarify the instructions. The Notes sections and text with the light bulb image draw the reader’s attention to additional information and handy tips. The downloadable sample files serve to enhance the reader’s experience by enabling the him/her to put into practice what s/he has just read about, before then trying it out on an actual translation assignment. This guide is ideal for translators and project managers alike to be referred to time and again, as necessary.

This book has helped me through the process of understanding different aspects that are used by trados and how to better my skill-sets as a translator. I specially loved diving into the chapters of Chpt 2:Creating and Using Translation Memories and Chpt 3: Translating a File. These chapters have helped me better understand the Trados tool and how it can be incorporated into aspects such as finding Translation results, organizing the translation memory and previewing my translation history. As an overview I'd say I was happy to read this book and it was time well spent in learning new skill-sets that will help me with my day to day work environment.
2.0 étoiles sur 5 Not Adding Much to the Free Help File 12 juin 2014
Par Pavel Tsvetkov - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
PROS:
1. The book looks nice: its professional design leaves a positive expression.
2. The information presented is well structured.
3. Explanations are clear.
4. Screen capture cut-outs have been used to illustrate points.

CONS:
1. If you are a Trados user, you know that the software comes with a free help file that discusses at length all practical issues, related to its usage. In my opinion Andy Walker's book adds little, if anything, to the information presented in said help file.
2. Considering 1 above I am not sure who would want to pay extra for the information he/she has already received for free.
3. No in-depth comments, insights, advanced knowledge is actually offered. Seasoned Trados users will be left wanting.

CONCLUSION:
1. The books is professionally designed and published, but the information contained inside is not helpful enough to warrant the price.
2. The author simply lists the features and does not comment on them or add useful advanced tips, which unfortunately turns the 'Practical Guide' into a repetition of the help file, supplied for free with every purchase of Trados software.

I find this guide very useful. It covers all Studio features that each translator needs to know to organize his or her translation process in the most efficient way.
The content is logically-organized and the explanation is given in a simple way.
I would definitely recommend this book to all Studio beginners and for existing Studio users willing to put in good order their knowledge, as well.
