After reading the book description, I was really looking forward to this one. I have to say that I was a little disappointed. The plot was interesting and original. However, the execution just wasn't what it could have been. The characters were not all that believable, and the hero / main character was not very likeable. The ending seemed like it was pasted on as an afterthought and really didn't fit with the rest of the story. It was just plain hokey.
Not bad enough to make me avoid this author in the future.....just disappointed that the book didn't live up to it's potential.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Very unlikeable viewpoint character, poor editing 16 juillet 2013

Basic story is a group of friends go on a hiking and camping trip, and encounter a threat that ends up being space robots hunting animals for science.

There is a lot of hiking, and battles to survive.

The author put a lot of effort into thinking out the area, the tech, and the weapons and tactics. Good writing style and descriptions.

1. Very poor editing, which was distracting.

2. The viewpoint character drives the plot, 80% of the time, by screwing something up. He seems like he may improve towards the end, only to turn about and screw up the rest of his life. Very poor storytelling.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A grand adventure with a down-to-earth main character 17 août 2012

Harbinger starts off as a normal group of friends are enjoying a trip in the wilderness. Things quickly change for the worse and you are carried along as this group is faced with new challenges as they struggle to survive. The main character, whose name is still unknown, is not your typical hero and has his own internal and external struggles to deal with while facing the risk of death to friends and family. This book left me ready to read the next in the series, SODIUM:2 Apocalypse, to see what happens next.

This was not the worst indie sci-fi I've ever read, by any means, but it did seem rather soulless, and it took me a while to figure out why.

The plot was reasonably sound: several friends go on a camping trip in the wilds of northern California, and while there they discover that aliens have invaded the beautiful landscape.

Were there spelling issues? A few, but nowhere near the frequency that I have been witness to before.

The sentence structure was a little amateurish in places, but overall not that bad.

Yet the book seems to go on and on endlessly until the final resolution, and after reading about a quarter of the way, it dawned on me: there is not a word of dialogue. The entire book is a first person narrative, almost a diary, of the protagonist's experiences.

Does that make it bad? Not necessarily, but it does seem tedious. Some spoken dialogue between the characters would go a long way to relieving that.

Interestingly, despite all that, the most interesting part of the book, to me, was the preview of the sequel, enough so that I bought it and am starting it now. So whatever the author's strategy, I guess it worked.

Does every new "author" just slop something together and not even have someone who speaks English look at it? "...her and Allie talked..." (Would you say 'her talked'? Then why change it if someone else is involved?) "...to sit out the rains out..." (Is that repetitively redundant?) "...hunting and site seeing..." (Too much internet. That would be sightseeing - one word.) "...how significant a roll..." (Pastries? Really? It played a ROLE.) I could go on and on, but the point is that every mistake like those listed above stops the reader in his tracks and ruins the whole experience of reading. Please! If you plan to publish a book, find a professional to edit it, first. Otherwise, you're just wasting each reader's time.
