Présentation de l'éditeur

Sometimes, you need a demon to fight demons.

Lincoln Marshall is a small-town deputy with a very big problem. Six members of his church have been found dead, killed by a rogue werewolf. He'll have to make a deal with the Devil to save victims that have gone missing -- maybe literally.

Elise Kavanagh, preternatural investigator and exorcist, is the expert when it comes to violent deaths at the jaws of evil. She's also the demon known as the Godslayer. Elise jumps at Lincoln's case, and it's not just because of his down-home charm. Someone's laid a trap for her in Northgate, and she wants to find out who.

She'll have to team up with Rylie Gresham, Alpha of the last surviving werewolf pack, to figure out who's trying to blame the murders on werewolves. Only together can they stop the killings -- and uncover the secrets buried in Northgate.

En savoir plus sur l'auteur

Hi everyone! My name is Sara, and I write urban fantasy novels as SM Reine. I collect swords, cat hair, and typewriters (which I do use for writing!). It's a good day when those three things have nothing to do with each other.

If you would like to know the instant I have a new book available, you should enlist in my Army of Evil! We have a WICKED cool secret handshake, but you'll have to sign up to learn it. ;) Check it out -- http://smarturl.it/armyofevil

Deputy Lincoln Marshall is a God-fearing man who wants to save his small town from a series of horrific murders. Given the apparent supernatural origin of these crimes, he needs some special help, so he turns to Elise Kavanagh, who is uniquely qualified for this assignment. Investigator of supernatural crimes, former exorcist and demon hunter, and gun for hire, Elise also happens to be a powerful demon. When it appears that the murders may have been committed by werewolves, Elise goes on the hunt, but what she finds isn’t quite what she bargained for. Old wounds from her past are re-opened as Elise has to decide whose side she is on and who she can trust.

This is the first in a series. The basic story line was promising, but I think the author tried to jam pack too much into this one book, and even too much into just one character. While it’s clear that Elise was once human and is now a demon, there’s a lot of other stuff going on with her character. Apparently she’s also Eve (as in Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden), and, oh, yeah, she killed God. After a certain point I just stopped trying to figure it all out. There are witches, demons, werewolves, angels, etc., which is great because I understand that an author has to build an entire world to populate the novels, but it was a little forced, almost as if the author was trying to capitalize on every aspect of urban fantasy that’s popular right now. There are even zombies in this world. I could see definite influences from Kim Harrison, for example, and her Hollows series, as well as book like Angelology. And did anyone else laugh at the priest’s name—Mikhail Night? (You have to be a child of the 80s and love Knight Rider to get it.)

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Kind of frustrated... 19 juillet 2013

I really loved the Descent series, so of course, I was excited to get Sacrificed in Shadow. However, while it's a really good book, something about it did not sit right with me. I'm going to make a quick list of things that I liked and didn't like because my review will be too wordy otherwise.

Things I liked:
-Pace was fast
-Plot was interesting, complex, and kept me intrigued
-The series crossover was handled well without "trying too hard"
-It was difficult to put down. I read it in one night.
-The writing was great

Things I didn't like:
-The fact that James didn't show up until over halfway through the book
-The characters were off:

* Elise was too emotional, not because she has Eve's empathy, but because she just didn't react to things with her usual toughness. She also lost what should have been fairly easy fights for her and freaked out during some fights rather than thinking before she acted. She also (POSSIBLE SPOILERS) slept with an ex-football player/cop that honestly grossed me out. He was creepy, in my opinion, and didn't seem like Elise's type. (POSSIBLE SPOILERS OVER)

* James, on the other hand, would say one thing, then do another. I don't see why he insists that he will make her forgive him, then does stuff behind her back again.

-Elise and James' relationship. It's just bleak. I guess they will get their happy ending together, but I wish the author would show some progress in their relationship. It seems to be getting worse, instead.
-Some inconsistency. Elise is supposed to be able to tell what people are feeling because she can sense their bodies' reactions due to her demon powers. But there were times she could, and times she couldn't. For instance, she could tell what James felt, to an extent, when he was in Hell tattooing her in a past book, but she couldn't read him at all when they finally saw each other again. It was inconsistent.

I guess my main problem was with the characters. To me, they were off in this book, but the story was great, the action interesting, the plot well done, and so on. It deserves four stars.

I'm somewhat undecided on this one. I never read the werewolf series but, being that I'm a man in my late thirties, they weren't really written with someone like me in mind. On the other hand, I LOVED the Descent series. It kept getting better with each new book. My love for the character that is Elise ensured I'd be buying this book as soon as possible. While I did enjoy it for the most part, there was too much left to the unknown. The whole time I was reading this book the one thing that kept popping into my head was that I wanted to know more about what had happened during the previous three years. I don't mean a detailed analysis of the whole time, but at least something more than what we got. My one main issue is that too much about what was happening with James was completely unknown. After all that has happened between James and Elise, I find it hard to believe that nobody was keeping track of him or his activities. That being said, I enjoyed the book overall and just bought the second book in the series. The werewolves seem like interesting group and I look forward to learning more about them. I've checked out many new independent authors who offer their work through the Kindle store, but Ms. Reine is one of a select few that keep me coming back for more. In other words, money well spent.

I know it's a bad title for a review but it's true. He's vastly different than he was back in the beginning of the descent series. Which shows just what a manipulative bastard he is. I'd really like it if he was immediately killed off but that won't happen.

Okay enough ranting. This book was pretty damn good. It gave some insight into what's been happening with Elise and Rylie. The story moved well and the focus was thankfully on Elise. I was afraid the focus would jump around which for the most part it doesn't.

I almost gave this book a 5 but the ending didn't sit that we'll with me. The action was good and was a solid ending for this book but I'm afraid of the predictability of future books. Elise is the godslayer but James seems way overpowered. More so than warrior angels. When it came down to it, Elise seems to be rather weak. In this book she gets her ads kicked way more than she should. Back to the predictability of the series. Once you get to the end you will understand exactly what I mean. I'm sure the action will be entertaining but when you have a really good idea how the end of the series will go, all you can do is hope your wrong.

I recommend reading the descent series before this one and the first 3 Riley books.

After finishing the book I'm still not sure what Elise was? Used to be human. Is a demon God. Male and a female. Has part of Eve in her...seriously, wtf? Too much of everything. A werewolf that was God touched. What does that even mean? Magic. It just has way too much of everything leaving me feeling like none of it makes any sense. I won't be buying that next book.
