Présentation de l'éditeur

On the tail end of another heartache, Jessica decides she’s had enough. Enough parties, enough mistakes, and enough of this rut she’s thrown herself into. When college finally grinds to a halt after four hazy years, she makes a decision. She’ll take a job in Texas, move out of L.A. for the first time in her life, and wipe the slate clean.

If only growing up was that easy.

Not one night in Texas and she meets the most ruggedly handsome cowboy she’s ever seen. William Davies has it all: wealth, prestige, profitable business ventures and women throwing themselves at him. But while Jessica theoretically knows he’s way out of her league, old habits die hard.

As Jessica struggles to flesh out this new life, William struggles to keep her at arm’s length. But Fate, and an adventurous spirit, has Jessica continuously bumping into him, making a mark as only she can.

Bien qu'ayant quelques bémols par rapport a l'histoire, celle-ci reste tout de même très bien écrite et très agréable a lire. J'ai passé un bon moment et le recommde chaleureusement.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 clumsy and confusing 13 août 2013

Generally I don't leave negative reviews. This author put a lot of work into her writing and she deserves to be recognized for that. However, I'm writing this review in the hopes that the author might take some of my opinions to heart and make necessary changes to this book. So here goes.

The story is about Jessica Brodie, a ditzy Californian who lands a cushy office job in Texas right after college graduation. After leaving her three best friends behind, Jessica makes a slew of new friends in Texas, including her quirky old landlady, a few people from work, and a TON of Texas men. There were so many men in this book, and very few women among Jessica's friends. I sometimes had trouble keeping all the guys straight.

"Back in the Saddle" was extremely difficult for me to get through. The biggest problem was with spelling and grammar. The occasional mistake should be expected in self-published books, but there were times when I got really frustrated with the lack of editing. Things like "forth" instead of "fourth" and frequent missing words. The dialogue was questionable at times, particularly during the main love interest's long exposition at the end. There was a part where he asked Jessica, "Do you think me a brute?" No Texas-bred man would ever say that. I can't think of any man I know who would say that, except for maybe Hugh Grant in whatever latest period movie he's doing.

The opening scene of this book is the worst, with Jessica waking up in a stranger's bed. Turns out she got drunk and had a one-night stand with a guy whose sheets smell like mildew and BO, a guy who leaves skid-marked underwear lying around his apartment, and who has no issue walking out of his apartment stark naked in front of all the other residents. This, right off the bat, makes it difficult to like Jessica at all. A smarter choice would have been to make the guy dumb as a box of rocks instead of a disgusting pig. How am I supposed to respect a heroine who would have sex with a man that can't wipe his own butt properly?

The frenetic narration is distracting and confusing through the entire book. There is a scene where Jessica walks into a Piggly Wiggly to buy toothpaste. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, she is on the floor buried in dog food. The scene development was so unclear that initially I thought a bag of dog food might have fallen on top of her from a high shelf or something. I like ditzy characters and I even like clumsy characters, but Jessica was just a little too extreme. Every time she sees the main love interest, she's falling all over herself.

Later in the book, Jessica spends several chapters being drunk in a bar. Even though she trips and falls on a regular basis while sober and wearing flats, apparently she can dance seductively and repeatedly make her way up and down a flight of stairs in sky-high heels while heavily intoxicated.

There is a scene of attempted rape that I predicted several pages before it happened. The misogyny of the male characters in this book was mind-boggling. I found it hard to believe that everyone knew just how awful the attempted rapist was, and yet he'd never been arrested or barred from any social events, and everyone just kind of abandons his intended target so that the villain is free and clear to move in for rape. One character hits on Jessica repeatedly, which she doesn't like, but a few pages later, she asks him to dance and he's suddenly a good guy. Another character physically abuses her in plain view of everyone watching at a rodeo. It seemed very contrived.

This was a free book, and I try not to be too hard on free books, but this book was particularly frustrating for me because you can tell that the writer has talent, but is in desperate need of beta readers and an editor. Get a handful of beta readers together who can help you make Jessica more likable, and get an editor to fix all the grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes.

I have read other books by the author - the "Overcoming Fear" series is really good but this book is horrendous!!! I will not be bothering with the subsequent books in the series. The heroine, Jessica, is a mess!!! Some reviewers have commented that the first 2 chapters are to show us her life in LA and contrast it with her life in Texas so we shouldn't judge the heroine by her actions at the beginning of the book - I beg to differ. She did not change. Her life in Texas is no different than her life in LA. She drinks irresponsibly, makes stupid decisions while drunk, is willing to go home with William the first time she interacts with him for more than a few minutes (the only reason she didn't is because he rejected her). The book has only 4 "scenes" - 1. her life in LA (drunk student), 2. the rodeo and subsequent after party (drunk, makes a stupid decision that leads to her almost being raped, being horny for William on the same night, and after, she is almost raped - I kid you not!), 3. the night at Froggy's (drunk and unable to walk on her own) and 4. the night at McCLarin's (well on her way to getting drunk but doesn't because she "breaks down" when she sees William and decides to leave). Nothing happens in between these 4 scenarios that build the story or the characters.

I was horrified that a 25 year old who realised that she had to leave LA in order to stop making bad decisions and change her life for the better would then continue to live, and make decisions, exactly like she had in LA. I alternated between being embarrassed for Jessica and being angry at her. At no time did I like her, understand her or root for her. William's character was not fleshed out by the author and he came across as shallow and two dimensional.

I got the book for free but even so it was over valued!!!

I was on the fence starting this book with all the reviews stating they couldn't make it past the first few pages. I read the whole book and was LOL'ing at parts. I did enjoy it, although I am originally from Texas so didn't really care for all the 'accented' dialogue. I do plan on finishing the series at some point.

Oh boy was this bad! The low-life high drama of red necks and trailer park trash . Totally ridiculous and cheesy not to mention there is no sexual situations between the two main characters and it's a cliffhanger to boot.

I think i'm too old now to keep reading stuff which doesn't interest me. Got a bit further than a few pages but half way through gave up. Life's too short to read something I dislike. Main charater not 'loveable' and is just a drunken, one-night-stander. If this is modern life for young women I'm pleased I'm middle aged as it seems a sad lonely lifestyle.
