Stats & Stories - Serious Scintillation for San Francisco Fans 10 juillet 2011
Par Jill Clardy - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I received my copy in the mail today from Amazon and couldn't put it down! Baseball fans love statistics and this book is full of them. However, the format is far from boring. The book is loosely organized into chapters such as "The Legends", "The Rookies" and "The Rivalry". A short 1 - 1 ½ page intro into the title subject in each chapter is followed by short "stories" to illustrate the stats - 1,000 of them to be precise! For instance:

"232 - Barry Bonds walked (232) times in 2004. Bonds walked more times than anyone in baseball history. He led the league in walks 12 times, but his 2004 total is almost incomprehensible. He broke the major league record for walks for the third time in four seasons -and 120 of them were intentional."

"123 - Willie Mays scored (123) runs in 1955 - second best in the league. Duke Snider lead the league with 126 runs for Brooklyn. Mays led the league in slugging, OPS, home runs, and total bases, and was among the top five leaders for average, OBP, runs, hits, triples, RBI, steals, extra-base hits, and times on base. He was fourth in MVP balloting."
The writing is conversational and concise. You don't need to read the book from front to back, but can pick it up and peruse any chapter in any order.

The long-awaited World Series title and exciting pennant and series games that preceded it has rekindled the fanaticism of Giant's lovers throughout the Bay Area and beyond, and this book would make the perfect gift for a Giant's fan.

Perhaps the previous reviewer read a different version of the book than I did. There are no photos included - just the cover photo of the ballpark - which is probably one of the most scenic and fan-friendly in the country.

San Francisco Giants fans still celebrating victory in the 2010 World Series should pick up a copy of this book. It's 1,000 of the greatest stories from franchise history with an extra chapter written after last season's playoffs that details the Giants remarkable postseason run. The chapters include photos from the Hall of Fame and essays / intros on some of the greatest moments and players from franchise history -- and then of course the numbers tell all the crazy stats and remarkable feats achieved by all of your favorite players. In my opinion it's the perfect baseball book -- lots of numbers and lots of trivia to discuss.
