Emilio Salgari was one of the best adventure writers of the early 20th century, although he wrote only in Italian and never left Verona, the city of his birth. I (and most Italian children) grew up reading these swashbuckling adventure novels; most were about pirates as noble social rebels with their own code of honor, fighting the bad guys by land and by sea in the Caribbean, Malaysia and other exotic locales. Sandokan is no exception. He's the ultimate romantic hero: the son of a Raja deposed by the British, he has his own island, Mompracem, from which he struggles against evil colonizers for the cause of good. When I was a kid these books made me want to be a pirate! (Unfortunately the career possibilities were poor, so I became an anthropologist instead.) Salgari's books took countless Italian kids to the far corners of the earth with their exciting, action-filled drama; it's great to finally see one of them in English. More, please!

I grew up in Mexico City reading Salgari's books and although I still keep my original books (translated to Spanish) I have always regretted that my children (raised in the US) can not read the stories in English. But now it's finally possible! I think that if an American audience had a chance to read Salgari's rich adventures, it would be hooked on it. Thank you for bringing Sandokan back to my life!

It is funny how small events can make people do something weird!

I first heard the name Sandokan when I was less than ten years old. That time I had no idea what it was all about. Only years later I found the book Tigers of Mompracem translated in English. I bought it, I read it and I fell in love with it!

It is one of the best books I have ever read!
