Useless Garbage 18 août 2013
Par A. Primavera - Publié sur
Format: Broché
This piece of garbage is a waste of your time and money. The author is no scholar or even someone remotely involved with the cult of Santa Muerte. He cannot speak Spanish, and he mistranslates and misspells word after word, concept after concept. Even in English, the book is filled with errors that MS Word would have caught. Presumably, the author acted as his own "editor." The whole book is double-spaced, like a high school student who thinks he can make it seem that he wrote twice as much with this clever little trick. How stupid do you think we are? The book is about 200 pages. Take away the many images (many of which are irrelevant to the supposed topic) and the double-spacing, and this book is a 30 page pamphlet of largely erroneous misinformation. No wonder that this "book" is self-published; no legitimate publisher would touch this. The really troubling part is that there is the odd, interesting piece of information. But considering the MANY factual errors, I cannot trust ANY of the information presented here. How irresponsible!

I am writing a doctoral dissertation on Santa Muerte, and I am also a devotee. I have read everything printed on the subject in both English and Spanish. This garbage will not be in my reference list, unless I create a "negative reference list."

There are too many errors (factual, going off-topic, translation, spelling, diction, subject-verb agreement, citation, etc.) to list here. It is a waste of my time, and I am angry for having purchased this crap. I hate to write a negative review, but others should be warned and spared the time and expense that this "book" has caused me.

If you do not speak Spanish, but are interested in an introduction to the phenomenon of Santa Muerte, read R. Andrew Chestnut's Devoted to Death: Santa Muerte, the Skeleton Saint published by Oxford University Press. Even if this book is written by a gringo outsider who does not speak Spanish, at least it is an edited, scholarly text with accurate information.

A nice primer on Santisima Muerte 2 septembre 2010
Par A.M.B. - Publié sur
Format: Broché
I bought this book without having read anything about it. It is a fairly basic primer on Santa Muerte as well as other Folk Saints. The author relates mostly surface information and does not dig too deeply into any one topic, but for those who have just begun to encounter Santa Muerte, I can definitely see where this book would prove helpful.

The book features several black and white photographs detailing altars, shrines, devotees, rituals, and sacramentals for Santa Muerte. You will also get to see several depictions of popular Folk Saints like Jesus Malverde, whom the author has also touched on in this book.

In addition to this, the author gives the basic meanings for each of Santa Muerte's colors and other information on the development and evolution of this miracle working Lady.

The drawbacks of this book are mainly that the entire thing is double spaced, so in actuality the number of pages written could have been cut in half. Aside from that, it is a pretty descent little book.

For those who want to read more about Santisima Muerte, and do not speak or read in Spanish, I can recommend Bryant Holman's book. I would also recommend learning to read in Spanish as there are a wide variety of books available on Santa Muerte published in Mexico.

Tony's book is a good overview of Santa Muerte. He's done his homework. Take the other 1 Star Critics with a grain of salt!

I'm a very dedicated devotee to santa muerte. I pick up any book in English I can on her. I also know like in all things she's got a light and dark side. but this guy was a joke and I wasted 10.00 on this piece of crap. he was no devotee he was no scholar he was just in it to make a buck. he drew heavily on the dark aspects of her faith, the drugs the crime and the killings but trust me people for as many of her dark followers out there there are twice if not 3x's the regular everyday faithful followers that follow the letter of the law like myself. he seemed not to have any real interest in the subject matter and had no passion. HE WAS A JOKE!!!AND INSULTING TO ANY PERSON WHO IS A DEVOTEE TO SANTA MUERTE OR THOSE INTESTED IN HER!!!! IF YOU WANT A REAL BOOK ON SANTA MUERTE IF YOU'RE LEARNING READ 'Devoted to Death': Santa Muerte, the Skeleton Saint by R. Andrew Chesnut this author took the time to study really get indebt with the religion went to santa muerte masses and talked to many many real devotees. balanced the good info with the dark aspects of her faith, even collected some items along the way for himself. if I could've given half a star or 1/4th I would've this book and author was a terrible disrespectful joke.

An excellent 5 star book for info on the cult of Santisma Muerte from a outside point of view. There is nothing in this book about the occult and actual practices of the cult. if you not working in LE or psychology fields or social work then this book of NO VALUE to you. NONE!

I studied religion, spirituality and the occult for 30 years and found this book to be a waste of money. that is why I gave it one star Unless you can read Spanish go to a botanica and read those little pamphlet type books on the saint. also it should not be double spaced it is a 5 to 8 book.
