Descriptions du produit

This well-known folk poem from the 17th century is a form of trick verse. Included in classic anthologies of children's poetry, the verse appears nonsensical at first sight, but given a break in the middle of each line, begins to make perfect sense. At the simplest level, it is a lesson on grammar and punctuation. Even the youngest of readers will delight in the overturning of logic that nonsense entails, and the 'trick' with which meaning can be made to return. But as with most folklore, this poem is not just for children, it is meant for all ages. Adults will marvel at the ways it teases out the paths of meaning. Is the difference between fantasy and reality largely grammatical? Or are these inversions the very essence of poetry - by turns meaningless and profound - which overturn our habitual ways of perception? In this pioneering visual exploration of I Saw a Peacock, Gond tribal artist Ramsingh Urveti and book designer Jonathan Yamakami add a further layer of imagery and play to the poem's enigmas, reflecting and complicating its meanings in delicious ways.

Incredibly Beautiful 26 mai 2012

Saw a few pictures of this posted somewhere and bought it from amazon later. It's very clever how the story changes from page to page. It's a bit like one of those images that keeps magnifying and magnifying, showing you more and more as you look at it. The illustrations are beautiful and understated. Well worth the price I paid for it.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or the poem. I am happy to be now.

On its own, the trick-poem is amusing but wouldn't have caught (or held) my attention otherwise. When paired with Urveti's artwork, the poem almost literally transforms into something more elegant.

I read many excited previews followed by rave reviews of this product before purchasing it. I can safely say it lived up to my expectations.

This is a book to be enjoyed rather than read. Beautiful artwork, intricate designes and clever layout give the text a whole new dimension.

Fiery Peacocks and Little Girls 26 septembre 2013

I bought this book in June for my oldest granddaughter's 6th birthday and it was an instant hit. Her 4 year-old sister was fascinated with it as well. The 6 year-old was intrigued by the various ways it could be read and, being quite artistic, values the detail of the illustrations. I'm told both girls continue to ask for it every evening before bed. The book is a beautiful read: the layout is unique and gorgeous to look at, and the poem/tale holds the girls' interest which leads to the most imaginative conversations! Kudos to the 17th century author and to both the 21st century illustrator and book designer.

Tara books are making such marvellous books!
The feel of the hand crafting, the unique imaginations, the sheer pleasure
of reading, looking at, touching..
Ram Singh Urveti was also one of the artists in their 'The Night Life of Trees',
which is truly stunning.
