Présentation de l'éditeur

12 New Ways To Create New Scenes... Transitions... and much, much more!

Great screenplays are made of great scenes, memorable scenes. Who can forget Cary Grant being chased through the cornfield by that crop duster? Or Gene Kelly singing in the rain? Or Indiana Jones facing that huge swordsman in the marketplace... and shooting him? Director Howard Hawks (“The Big Sleep”, “Bringing Up Baby”, “Rio Bravo”) famously said, “A film needs three great scenes and no bad ones”. But how do you create those great scenes?

This Blue Book will help you tune up those tired scenes! We’ll look at what a scene is and how many you will need. The difference between scenes and sluglines. How long should your scenes be, and what is *too long*? We will put your scenes on trial for their lives! Using examples like “Jaws” we’ll look at beats within a scene. Scene DNA. What is driving your scene? Creating set pieces and high concept scenes. We will even talk to a famous director about creating memorable scenes.

But that’s not all! There are 12 ways to create new scenes. How to create unexpected scenes. Use dramatic tension to supercharge your scenes with excitement. Using plants and payoffs in scenes. Taking your scenes to the limit. Plus transitions and buttons and the all important “flow”... and more! Over 65,000 words!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 More Martell wisdom! 7 mai 2014
Par Karla McNeese - Publié sur Amazon.com

I own so many writing books I can't even count them. I can usually count on getting at least one nugget of advice from each one to help me as a writer and make the purchases worth it. With Martell's latest Scene Secrets, I got tons of good advice for less than $4. He dissects scenes from some of my favorite movies to demonstrate WHAT and WHY each scene is effective. He recommends his reader do the same when watching films in order to become well-versed on how a screenplay is put together, a "reverse engineering" of the writing process. I have been following films while reading their scripts simultaneously for some time and indeed, it does make a difference. There are too many words of wisdom in this book to sum up here but suffice it to say, if you have read his other screenwriting books, you understand what I mean. And if you haven't read them, get to it!

I'm running out of compliments to give William's books. Every time I get a new Blue Book, I am blown away AGAIN. It's like he's trying to come up with new ways to impress me. Which, by the way, isn't easy. I read "writing" books for a living. I go through at least two a week. And I have a hard time finding anything good to say about the vast majority of them. But William's books never cease to amaze me.

This book is no exception. It's full of great (and USEABLE) advice that WILL make a difference in your writing if you put it into practice. William Martell is bar none the greatest writing teacher I've ever come across. If you buy any books on writing, whether it be for film or novels, then buy Blue Books. They are a mine of information that you can come back to again and again and you'll just keep discovering new treasures.

These are the ONLY writing books that I actually read more than once. And, believe me, I've read them more than two or three times. William Martell will inspire you to a new level of greatness.

And I can't say that about any other author.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Unexpected salve for my writer's burnout 14 août 2014
Par Matthew E. Eaton - Publié sur Amazon.com

Honestly, I bought this on the downswing of yet ANOTHER burnout from writing, hitting yet ANOTHER wall on my journey to recover from this wicked game.

This captured my attention because I was always curious on scene work and breakdown in general. I started reading it with a little trepidation (again, writer burnout), and by the end I was thinking about some of my previous works and what I could have done differently to energize them.

If you are a screenwriter, a novelist, a short story writer - heck, even if you write blog posts - you should do yourself a favor and pick up this book. This will give you a few breakdowns from popular movies and give you reasons as to why they are, indeed, timeless because of their scenes.

I appreciate this book, and I know I'll be jumping into other blue books in the series ASAP!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 This is a must read! 30 novembre 2014

This is a must read! I HATED reading all the popular screenwriting books out there as they were vaguely structural. I needed something more with depth having developed story telling theories of my own. After watching William C Martell's interview by Film Courage, it hit me! I heard theories so so so similar to mine and decided to buy 4 of the blue books on kindle for android. This is the first time ever I read a screen writing related book that focused on tools for building your craft. This is a must read! Had to put my screen writing on pause to read these blue books. AND NO IT WAS PROCRASTINATION (mayby partly). But upon finishing, I revised crafted beautiful scripts. One of which was shot became popular and is being developed for TV and the other is going into feature production.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The stories the thing (well that and the characters) but ... 21 octobre 2014

The stories the thing (well that and the characters) but every story is made up of "parts" and if any of those parts fail it waekens the story. Martell's guides strengthen your story. Your parts. When I hit a wall with a particularly difficult script that I was writing for a particularly difficult producer I went back to Martell to get a fresh take. His stuff works for amateurs and pros.
