Dommage.

(The book idea was enticing: the bachelor à la rose & a heroine who had not planned on participating. But the lack of editing shows: spelling mistakes as well as glaring grammar ones, sentences with either missing or two many words, and the ending seemed more than contrived. The fact that the two protagonists would suddenly burst into anger to move along the story didn't help + good try of using french words, but not good enough: it's salade aux lardons, but it's quite rare to find that on a menu).

Ever wonder what it is like behind the scenes of "The Bachelor"? What happens when he decides which woman he wants on day one and has to keep with up the show for three months? Come inside this book and get ready to smell the roses...

The last thing Zoe thought she was getting into when she agreed to go on by blind date was ending up on a documentary about dating. After meeting the man, he infuriates her and she can't wait to walk away. But a forged agreement from her friend forces her to stay on and the longer she is there, the more she tries to force herself to feel for anyone but him.

As soon as Dante walks into the room, he spots Zoe. She is so different from all the other women there, how could she not. And when she throws attitude at him whenever possible, Dante knows he has met his match and can't wait to see how their relationship develops.

As production continues both Zoe and Dante are forced to hide their growing affections from others and each other for the sake of the show. As things ramp up with the show, emotions come to a head. Will they be able to admit how they feel for each other and let everything else go or will it all be just too much?

I really liked this book. I am not a huge fan of the bachelor series but this was a really cute behind the scenes take on it. It is a slow build to a sweet love story done in a way that you are sucked in and immediately rooting for the characters to stop fighting each other and just get together already.

My thoughts:

Quick hook or slow starter? 5 (I was hooked from the first chapter)
Character development: 4
Level of Romance between characters: 4.5
Passion/Heat level: 4 (chemistry between these two is pretty instant but they spend most of the story fight it and each other.)
Angst/Heartbreak: 4 (did I mention they fight their feelings for most of the book?)
Cliffhanger?: Nope, this is a nice refreshing stand alone.

Overall, I loved it. My only complaint is I would have liked a little more heat to the love scenes...that would have made this a 5 star read for me but other than that, I thought it was great.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good Initial Try 31 mars 2014

I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the premise of this story and really enjoyed how it immitated a popular television show only with behind the scenes points of view. The pace of the book felt a little slow to me and the scene in which the main characters finally get together felt a little rushed together. All of the chemistry that was between them throughout the rest of the story was lacking when they finally made love. There were parts of the story that felt like filler because they added nothing to the story and the editing leaves a lot to be desired. It was a very entertaining, quick read and I would hope that Clarissa keeps writing similar stories, improving with each attempt.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Romance is the word! 8 mars 2014

Clarissa Cartarn never fails to excite with her books! Her next romance novel, Scent of Roses will take you on an unexpected journey into the world of reality television. I have to however warn you that if you think it is going to be predictable and boring, you will be in for a surprise!
I found the two main characters interesting and diverse. The author developed the plot of the book beautifully, she pulls you into the whole drama of Dante and Zoe! You will definately not be able to pull yourself away from this one.
The only critisism I have is that it was all over too soon, I want more... So maybe, my advise would be to not read it in one sitting, but rather stretch the pleasure out! So in other words, delay your romance gratification!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Cartharn does it again with a lovely romance 7 mars 2014

Cartharn does it again with a lovely romance.

I’ve read this author’s work before and like her style of romance writing. 'Scent of Roses' is well rounded with loveable characters, great descriptions of places, and emotions, and an entertaining, satisfying conclusion.
I enjoyed the character Dante very much. He’s just so sweet and yet endearingly needs a shake when it comes to ‘getting his girl’. The story is so believable. We see the type of TV show where this story is set, all the time, and here’s a 'behind the scenes' of just such a show story, that could happen. It’s a teasing, chase romance with steamy kisses when the two main characters do get together at intervals. A page-turner, because you so want the two to end up together too. I loved this story, and can recommend it for a nice read over a few lazy afternoons, five stars.

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Okay. The author provided me a copy of this book to review. I am no longer book blogging, but true to my word, I'm posting this review! Now, on to the review!

Main Girl Character (whose name I can't even remember). She's an upper thirties girl with low self-esteem, fast changing emotions and no experience with men. She's the girl that's beautiful...but doesn't know it. Is is alluring, but thinks she's awkward. Think Bella Swan. I do feel the author did a good job putting across who she is as a person...in the beginning, but as the book unraveled I found myself wondering who this person was. If this is the woman that was career driven, no-nonsense then why would she let some pompous rich guy boss her around?! It just seemed out of character! Not to mention she was soooooo clueless it was infuriating! I'm serious, she literally has no sense of self-love or self-awareness. To avoid spoiling the book I'll leave it at that.

Dante. In the beginning I felt he would be the swoon-worthy love interest that sweeps the girl off her feet. In this book he's a controlling, arrogant and mean man who sees the main character as a distraction, an amusement. I get that he's rich and he's supposed to be used to getting what he wants, but shouldn't the love interest have redeeming qualities? Dante sooooo does not have any. He grabs the main character, orders her around like a servant and demands her sole attention. All of this while dangling his "leverage" over her head to keep her in line. I'm sorry, but isn't this an abusive relationship?

The paper cut out *whoops* I mean other characters in the book. So...the main character has a best friend that she just forgets about after going to France? No more phone calls, late night chats or texts? Hmm...okay. Not to mention the girl in the group that she gave her room to. She doesn't talk to her that much any more after the beginning of the book. So....what happened there? And Kyle? Sigh. He's so cardboard cut out it's unbelievable.

The plot is obvious in that the book's working towards the finale of the main character and Dante being together. The book is well paced, without out too much lag, but it all ends there. The story does not have enough substance to make the reader want to know what's going on. This book's content has been covered NUMEROUS times.

The setting of the book is very nice. I get the feeling the author isn't American, because she has a very keen eye on things that Americans most likely wouldn't know (when it comes to France, that is). The descriptions are nice, as well as the ambiance of the book. This alone was not enough to save it, though.

The book is paced very well. There's no way around that, the author did a good job with this part, but it did not save this book for me!

This is the part where a lot of Indie writers get dinged (with me at least). There are ENTIRE paragraphs and pages that are either: 1) not edited, 2) repeated, but in a different way and 3) have words missing. This was completely infuriating because I'd hit my stride with this book, and then I'd have to re-read certain lines over and over again just to figure out what's going on. This book could have benefited greatly from some more editing (meaning micro, marco and developmental).

This book has a good enough story that would've gotten 3 stars, but the editing was so bad that I just couldn't do it. The pacing and plot are good enough, but the characters are weak. I really feel this was a good enough try by the author, but it just did not sit well with me.

This is a hard one. I don't hate it, but I don't like it. If the author were to go through another round with an editor, add depth to her characters I would recommend. As is? I do not recommend.
