Excellent! 4 mai 2006

I have both this Stuttgart version, and the French Les Musiciens (Pennetier, Pasquier & Pidoux), and Stern trio - amazon-search: B00000279G - on these Schubert trios. Nice things can be said of all of them. I got the Stuttgart trio for ten years and am naturally getting a little bored of it, ready for other views on the trios. But it has been completely satisfying for many years. Telling that one of these readings/performances is better than another, in terms of stars, is like giving a wild cowslip primrose four stars and a lily of the walley five stars - it doesn't make sense.
When it comes to inspiration, perhaps I prefer the Stern trio. It is also very touching. The tempos are correct. It is perhaps not so satisfying when it comes to production values, but is very exciting.
When it comes to delicacy of sound and playing, Les Musiciens are recommendable. The problem is the andante; they play it too prudently; it feels too slow. I don't find the playing much more exciting than the Stuttgart trio, either.
I don't agree that the Stuttgart trio sounds coarse and direct, but this is certainly a matter of taste, if not a matter of what you are used to and expect of the music. The Stuttgart trios doesn't make the slow movements too slow, the andante is really played andante. It is perhaps not so delicate as Les Musiciens, but the proceedings feel more firm, more determined. The same goes for the Stern trio.
So I still find this excellent! For Stuttgart trio's version of the trio D 898, search on amazon: B0000013KO.

A True Sleeper 14 août 2001

This is the best modern recording of the Eb Trio that I know at any price. The only performances I know which are in the same league are the out-of-print Serkin/Busch/Busch EMI recording from the 1930's, and the Heifetz/Piatigorsky/Laetiner recording from the mid-1960's which was released with the Heifetz boxed set. At Naxos prices, this should be an automatic purchase for anyone who anyone who loves Schubert's chamber music.

Worthy performances of Schubert's E-flat Trio and Notturno by the Stuttgart Trio 19 novembre 2011

Schubert: Piano Trio in E-flat (D 929) and Notturno (D897), Stuttgart Piano Trio.

Schubert wrote his E-flat trio in late 1827 and participated in its performance in a March 1828 concert of Schubert music in Vienna (almost the only concert where any of Schubert's larger-scale works were performed).

The opening allegro is one of Schubert's best, with a lovely, lyrical second theme and a restless, dramatic development section. The andante con moto that follows adapts a haunting theme based on a Swedish song that Schubert heard in Vienna. After the sprightly Scherzando with its energetic trio, the long last movement, a kind of sonata-rondo, brings back the principal theme from the andante and ends on a bright, declamatory note.

The Notturno, also for piano trio, is believed to have been an alternative slow movement for the B-flat Trio (D 898). The peaceful, lullaby-like opening section is succeeded by a more emphatic middle section.

The Stuttgart Trio is well known for its performances of the classical and romantic trio literature. This CD features an energetic performance of the E-flat trio, strong on emphasis but sometimes lacking a bit in lyricism. There are some disconcerting tempo changes in the andante which are not in the score. Overall, though, these are good performances of both the E-flat Trio and the Notturno. They were recorded in 1988, and the sound quality is excellent.

As usual, this Naxos CD is a good buy for the money, though there are only 58 minutes of music. Another Schubert selection of up to 20 minutes could have been added.

Superb Interpretations 29 décembre 2010

I usually have short lapses where my mind wanders when I listen to chamber music. Last night, rather late, I played this CD. What a revelation to hear such beautiful music. My mind did not wander but went from one beautiful movement to another! I listened to the complete trio and noted that the second movement was music that I had heard and enjoyed from the movie soundtrack, Barry Lyndon. The musicians who make up this trio are excellent. Well integrated sound. The CD has a middle of the hall perspective with well balanced instruments. This group has another Schubert Trio and some Beethoven Trios CD's which I ordered the morning after. strongly Recommended!

This is the best performance available today. The sound is outstanding. The price is right. What else is there to say? One of Stereophile's "Records To Die For".
