Description du produit

Angela Hewitt's recordings of Schumanns solo piano works for Hyperion have been described as revelatory something to cherish (Gramophone) and unreservedly superb (The Guardian). Now she turns her attention to the works for piano and orchestra in a stunning release which includes the beloved Piano Concerto in A minorone of the most treasured concertos in the repertoireand two other works also written for Clara Schumann. Hewitts trademark clarity of line, and her technical control which never limits the expression of passion, are clearly in evidence. She is supported by the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin and the brilliant Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu. A fascinating commentary by Hewitt herself completes this album which is sure to delight her ever-increasing legion of fans.

The sense of joy that infallibly emanates from Angela Hewitt's piano playing is fully evident here in three works by Schumann the A minor Concerto, the Introduction and Allegro appassionato Op92 and the Introduction and Concert Allegro Op 134. Hewitt understands the character and perspective of this music. There is no element of grandstanding in the Concerto. Nothing in the interpretation is gratuitously flamboyant. Rather, the piano enjoys intimate exchanges with the orchestra, the conductor Hannu Lintu bringing out the score s essential instrumental timbres with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester and phrasing them in such a way as to forge a complementary foil to the piano s discreet world of expression. That is not to say that the performance lacks drama. The finale has an unusual depth and swinging impetus by dint of being taken fractionally slower than the norm, for which Hewitt proffers convincing reasoning in her liner note, and the teasing rhythmic pulls against the movement s triple metre are woven delicately into the scheme of things. The overall impression is of a performance in which all three movements are conceived with a well-judged balance between one another, the music s poetry to the fore and its subtle emotions conveyed with a refined animation of discourse. --Telegraph,06/07/12

The most striking thing about this recording on first encounter is not the elegant, fluent playing of Angela Hewitt (that's a given in all her performances) but the tempo of the closing allegro vivace of the Piano Concerto. Normally it's a helter-skelter race to the finish, but here Hewitt and Hannu Lintu choose a surprisingly stately pace, reflecting Schumann's actual metronome marking and bringing out the movement's swinging, waltz-like character. It's an example of Hewitt's meticulous attention to detail that is always so evident, whether she's playing Bach or Messiaen. Her perfect handling of the breathtakingly lovely opening of the Introduction and Allegro appassionato would melt the hardest of hearts. --Sunday Telegraph,01/06/12

…this recording should be applauded for its passion, detail, courage and commitment. Performance **** Recording ***** --BBC Music Magazine,Aug'12

The performance is...fine and the recording does full justice to Hewitt's immaculate legato and the sheer refinement of her sparsely pedalled playing. --IRR, July/Aug'12

Good but not Great 17 août 2012

First of all i am a fan of Angela Hewitt. I have all her recordings but i have to say i am disappointed with her performance of the Schumann piano concerto. First of all the conducting Lintu and the playing of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin is wonderful. The playing is crisp and vital and the movement speeds Allegro Moderato etc are right. Hewitt does a little better on the other two Introduction pieces but it is in the Concerto that her playing is not up to par. She takes the movements from the allegro moderato 1st and 3rd movements way too slow. Her playing is often too soft, you will hear the piano disappear because the orchestra drowns it out completely in some parts. At almost 20.00 for this disc i don't recommend it. This is a good pick only if you want the 2 introductions as well. Perahia and Ashkenazy both play all the pieces better and they are both available on disc. If you want just the Schumann concerto Kovacevich is my number one pick and he performs it with an incredible version of the Grieg piano concerto. If you want to go old school Fleisher on the Schumann and Grieg with Szell conducting.

Perfest Coordination 15 juillet 2013

This beautiful recording shows what perfect coordination between soloist and orchestra can be like. Hewitt and Lintu have worked together for many years. They know how to balance the solo and tutti in a way that provides an intimacy rare in the concerto discography. Instead of the usual contest for dominance between soloist and conductor, we have a perfect union of musical resources. The result is a delicate and moving interpretation of Schumann's fine composition.
