Présentation de l'éditeur

Come home to Hickory Hollow, Pennsylvania--the beloved setting where Beverly Lewis's celebrated Amish novels began--with new characters and new stories of drama, romance, and the ties that draw people together.

Jennifer Burns shocks her family and friends when she bids farewell to her modern life in favor of the Old Order Amish world, settling in with Samuel and Rebecca Lapp.

The people of Hickory Hollow are curious about the beautiful young seeker among them--one handsome Amishman in particular--and Jenny faces many challenges in the Proving time the brethren set for her...challenges of the heart, as well as the spirit.

"Much of the credit [for the growth of Amish fiction] goes to Beverly Lewis, a Colorado author who gave birth to the genre in 1997 with The Shunning..."

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Can't get enough of Beverly Lewis' books! 3 septembre 2013

I was given a copy of this book to read in return for an unbiased review. I did enjoy the book very much and while it is part of a series, it can be read independently of the previous books. I enjoyed the book and read it rather quickly. The main character was very likeable to me. At times, I found some parts of the book to be a bit slow-moving (maybe because I have read so much Amish fiction that some of the material about the Amish lifestyle was already "known" by me), but...overall....I am very happy I read the book and I think anyone who likes Amish fiction and Beverly Lewis' other books will very much enjoy it also. I did give it 5 stars as it was a book I didn't want to see end...and that, to me, means it was a very satisfying read!

Jenny Burns believes she was born into the wrong life. Consumed with the simple life, she plans, saves, and connects until she's able to move herself into the Amish community of Hickory Hollow. Rebecca and Samuel Lapp graciously open their home, but still stand guarded with their hearts, waiting for Jenny to prove she's here to stay. Along her journey, Jenny stumbles upon some hospitable friends to love and help her, and some guarded skeptics who have no concerns about stumbling her up long the way. But as the days roll on, Jenny finds that not everything is as simple and ideal in the Amish community. And secrets mount, making her question if she's meant for this life. Will her character prove strong enough, or will her guarded secrets destroy her and those she's come to love?

I love the way Beverly Lewis intertwines her characters. Other characters we've met in previous Hickory Hollow books reappear and still stay true to their story. After having read the previous four books, it's nice to see these old friends reappear. As for this story, it held true to similar Amish fiction, but in regard to an Amish convert, I've never read a fictional book with that theme. So it was interesting to learn more of the ins and outs of what that would involve and what would make someone convert to an Amish lifestyle.

The Bishops shunning of a Mennonite convert and deteriorating relationship with his church also added depth to the story. For a good chunk of the second half of the story, I felt like I knew where the story was going, but couldn't figure out how Lewis was going to get us there. There were a few twists and turns at the end that seemed rushed. Tying up of loose ends seemed slightly unrealistic, but by that point, I was so invested in seeing these characters succeed, I was able to overlook some rushing.

All in all, it was a great book that brought up some new aspects of Amish life I hadn't considered and still kept the integrity of the characters. Hickory Hollow remains alive, vibrant, and full of great lessons and people. The Secret Keeper was a great journey with an talented author.

I recently received a complimentary copy of The Secret Keeper by Beverly Lewis from Bethany House. As always, with any Beverly Lewis book, I loved it. Beverly Lewis has such an insight with the Amish culture. I find the Amish lifestyle fascinating. Even though a lot of Beverly's books are about the Amish, they each have a new approach, so you don't feel like you're reading the same story, just with new characters. This is the fourth book in the Home to Hickory Hollow series. I've only read two of the books in this series so far, but I have enjoyed both. (The review for The Guardian can be found here.) These books, though part of a series, can be read independently and you won't feel as if you've missed anything.

The Secret Keeper is a story about Jennifer Burns, an Englisher (not part of the Amish community). Jennifer has never felt comfortable in the English world and has been looking for a place to fit in. After writing letters back and forth with an Amish girl, Jennifer decides to leave her modern life to join the Amish community as a seeker. Samuel and Rebecca Lapp open up their home to Jennifer and try to teach her the Amish way of life. The brethren (the leaders of the Amish community) set a Proving time (testing period to see if she will be invited to join the community) for Jennifer. She faces many challenges as she must learn how to live without the modern conveniences of life and learn many new talents, such as: cooking, sewing, tending to farm animals, etc.

Book four in the Home to Hickory Hollow is your typical Amish fiction by Beverly Lewis. You will be very happy that you picked up a copy to read on a cool evening wrapped in a blanket, and a hot cup of cocoa in hand. The characters are just like family and you will feel right at home in this book.
I am sure that you will not be able to put this book down.
You will not be disappointed with this book at all.
I gave it 5 stars and I recommend this great fall read.
I was given this book by the publisher for my honest review.

This is the fourth book in the Hickory Hollow series but the first one I read. Definitely can be read as a stand alone but now I do want to read the rest of the series. To be honest, all the characters were so well developed that I forgot it was part of a series because I didn't need any "background" from other books to read this one. I picked this book because I enjoy Amish Christian fiction and because I was curious about whether an Englisher could become Amish. Beverly Lewis did an excellent job of describing the daily life of the Amish womenfolk and the struggles of the teens as they prepare for baptism. I enjoyed reading about Jenny's struggle to be Amish and learn about herself. Great characters and storyline. I can't wait to read more of Beverly's books.
