Au cours de Secret Invasion, Nick Fury sort de la clandestinité pour se battre aux cotés des autres héros contre les skrulls. Pour savoir ce qu'il a fait pendant ce temps là, il faut se replonger dans Secret War (première apparition de Daisy Johnson) et dans The Mighty Avengers 3: Secret Invasion Book 1 (recrutement des Secret Warriors) & Mighty Avengers vol.4: Secret Invasion Book 2 (première mission des Secret Warriors).
L'action de ce tome se situe pendant le Dark Reign (Norman Osborn a pris le pouvoir des organisations paramilitaires dans le Marvel Universe et en particulier il a démantelé le SHIELD pour le remplacer par une nouvelle organisation baptisée HAMMER. Nick Fury se retrouve seul et isolé, il est un agent de rien du tout (d'où le titre "Nick Fury : agent of nothing"). Néanmoins, il a commencé à préparer son retour en faisant appel à des superhéros potentiels repérés quand il était encore directeur du SHIELD et dont il a gardé l'existence cachée à tout le monde. Cette équipe se compose de Daisy Johnson (Quake), Phobos (le fils d'Ares), Sebastian Druid (le fils de Doctor Druid), Yo-yo Rodriguez (Slingshot, fille du Griffin), J.T. James (Hellfire, petit fils du premier Ghost Rider) et Jerry Sledge (Stonewall). Et en cours de route, ils recrutent un dernier membre qui n'est autre qu'un protégé de Gateway (aborigène bien connu des aventures des X-Men dans les années 1990).
Nick Fury a confié cette équipe aux bons soins de Daisy Johnson qui est chargée de les entraîner et de les commander au combat. Leurs missions sont en rapport avec la recrudescence d'activité d'HYDRA. Nick Fury profite de ce temps libre pour enquêter sur HYDRA et pour mettre sur pied une deuxième équipe d'intervention composée d'anciens agents du SHIELD (par exemple Dum Dum Dugan, Jasper Sitwell, Gabriel Jones et l'incomparable Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine). De son coté, HYDRA est sous la domination du Baron Wolfgang von Strucker qui s'est également entouré de beau monde : Madame Hydra, Viper, Gorgon (un rescapé de Wolverine: Enemy of the State : Ultimate Collection), Kraken et The Hive (un petit nouveau très réussi).
Les illustrations sont assurées par Stefano Caselli, un italien ayant déjà travaillé sur divers projets Marvel (par exemple Avengers The Initiative 1: Basic Training). Il a une manière de rendre les hommes sous un aspect très viril et coriace qui convient très bien à Nick Fury. Ses scènes d'action sont parfois un peu brouillonne ce qui se traduit par des dessins difficiles à déchiffrer. Il réussit à rendre assez vivantes les nombreuses scènes de dialogue. Sa comtesse de la Fontaine présente des proportions qui la rendent moins sexy que d'habitude (une véritable honte). Les effets spéciaux décrivant les pouvoirs de The Hive réussissent à faire ressortir leur caractère grotesque, à la fois dans le sens ridicule et à la fois dans le sens horrifique. Les décors sont d'un niveau correct et très bien mis en valeur (voire complétés) par la mise en couleur de Daniele Rudoni.
Ce tome regroupe les épisodes 1 à 6 de la série mensuelle, ainsi que 8 pages de l'épisode spécial "Dark reign : new nation". Les scénarios ont été écrits par Brian Michael Bendis et Jonathan Hickman. Pour être franc, j'ai plusieurs problèmes avec cette série. Bendis et Hickman ont choisi de modifier le positionnement d'HYDRA sur l'échiquier du pouvoir dans un grand mouvement de rétro-continuité difficile à avaler (même la comtesse fait observer que ce retournement de situation n'est pas crédible). Ce coup de théâtre ressemble à du Bendis en roue libre voulant absolument choquer au prix de toute crédibilité. Deuxième souci, les scénaristes privilégient les affrontements et une pléthore de personnages, ce qui laisse peu de place pour développer qui que ce soit. En fait, l'histoire aligne les apparitions des uns et des autres, sans vraiment approfondir qui que ce soit. Et du coup, en tant que lecteur, j'ai beaucoup de mal à m'attacher aux péripéties qui alignent de longues scènes de dialogues exposant la situation complexe, aux batailles rapides et confuses (et peu crédibles pour ce qui est de la récupération des helicarriers).
Ce titre d'espionnage m'avait mis l'eau à la bouche, mais à vouloir trop mettre de choses dedans (superhéros + espionnage + retour de nombreux personnages) les scénaristes ne réussissent pas à développer quoi que ce soit (qui trop embrasse, mal étreint).

Secret Warriors Vol.1 by Bendis, Hickman and Caselli

Political espionage, like it or hate it, there's no middle ground.
Either way it's in almost every `universe-bending' story Marvel puts out on the direct market. Civil War, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign and even the latest, Siege, have that inherent side to them. It's unavoidable. In a world of Captain Americas and Nick Furies, there is no escaping that side of the universe. Especially in huge crossover events.
And when you are talking about events like that, you have to include Brian Michael Bendis into the conversation. Author on probably all Avengers books known to men, with a hand on almost every universe-spanning Marvel event that comes along, it's no surprise he had a hand too in this new team book. But he's got a co-writer on this, or rather, the sole scripter for the series, Jonathan Hickman. Bendis' only here for the plot, but it's only right Hickman takes charge of the book from this trade on.
Because he can sure flat-out write. Fans, who read Hickman's own creator-owned series The Nightly News, need no introduction to Hickman's intelligence and knowledge, shown forth through his commentaries and narratives. They only need to delve into the first chapter of this lavishly bond hardcover collection to know what to expect. It takes only two scenes and captions like "We work for Nick Fury. A man who understands the difference between how the world is and how it should be" to get your mental cogs going into espionage overdrive. And then you realize what you have been missing all along.
A swift introduction of the team and the subsequent conflict against Sentry and the H.A.M.M.E.R battalion under his charge leads into a relatively quiet exchange between the Warriors and Nick Fury, their faithful leader. Never batting his sole eye, he takes control in his own ruthless and yet comprehensive way. J.T James put it best when confronted by an unimpressed Fury, "How about a 'good job, team' on not getting crushed by the two armies we were caught in between?" Fury replies with indifference, "And what lesson is that, J.T?" It sums up how the leader of the Secret Warriors deals back the cards he is dealt: with military professionalism.
Then it leads into a tense meeting between Nick and Norman Osborn himself. In many ways this book can be described as the book where Nick Fury shines. His intellect and his knowledge of the political entities in the structured underpinnings of the book come into play. The Hydra Corporation being the all-encompassing `glue' which binds and has been binding S.H.I.E.L.D all this while, with the rest of its corporate bodies, comes as a pleasant surprise to hardened readers. But to conceive of such ingenious plot ideas deserves mention and serves as a reminder of Bendis and Hickman's skill at creating involving plots with multi-layers.
Packing the Leviathan and the Howling Commandos into the picture only seems right, as Hickman outdoes even himself with the unusual amount of information cramped into every issue. But the thing here is that it never gets dull. That's where the book really stands out as an spy comic. Every struggle, whether physical or psychological, never feels done before. Every dialogue sequence feels tight, as is every action sequence. A shrewd choice on Hickman's part. Everything feels on edge, like a thriller pushed up to the tenth degree.
Hickman can flat out write. That is the fundamental truth when it comes to discussing this immensely entertaining work. Nary a flaw exists in this series and when you think of that in today's modern context, it is indeed a scary thought.

This volume reprints Marvel Comics' Secret Warriors issues #1-6, and pages from Dark Reign: New Nation. It starts with a flashback to D-Day, as Captain America gives a speech to the Howling Commandos on their landing craft as they head for the beach, intercut with Norman Osborne making a TV speech. This appears to be set in the aftermath of the Skrull Secret Invasion event and the `Secret War', and Nick Fury has recruited a team of unknown characters with super-powers and abilities to carry on his fight now that SHIELD has been disbanded. Hacking in to a decommissioned SHIELD databank, Fury discovers that Hydra was secretly running SHIELD - which mirrors the founding of the CIA, as some of the British agents who helped the Americans organise it were being run by the Russians, who allegedly thought it was just a front to feed them false information, as they had so easily broken in. Anyway, Fury gets intel on Hydra operations as well as SHIELD and HAMMER, who took over part of the SHIELD infrastructure. Fury and his various teams, including the Howling Commandos, who are now a private civilian security firm, employing the SHIELD agents who wouldn't join HAMMER, start to loot the various decommissioned bases, and there is a spectacular view of The Dock - the SHIELD base holding three helicarriers in mothballs, which Fury is intending to liberate. I found this to be an excellent, interesting story, which includes a lot of SHIELD back-story/history, including characters who I remember from the 1960s stories. We also get a surprise revelation about a major character from the 1960s, though being a spy story, there is no telling if it will turn out to be a triple cross. We also get to view the inner workings of Hydra, and meet the current high command, which includes a number of weird individuals who I have not come across before, but may be familiar to regular Marvel readers.

The idea of cataclysmic events is to sell comics, main titles, crossovers and new titles. This belongs to the last category. Under the Dark Reign era of Marvel, why not create a new title? In this case, Nick Fury recruits a band of disillushioned Shield agents and Howling Commandoes to infiltrate Shield bases covertly run by Hydra agents.
If the writing was tighter and especially if the artwork was gritty, this might really appeal to me. As it is, a manga faced Nick Fury is not convincing as an ageing warrior.
