5.0 étoiles sur 5 Self Defense for Seniors offers Practical Advice for Boomer Safety 13 mars 2014
Par Brooke D. Clifford - Publié sur
As one ages, venturing into public places can be intimidating. This author offers practical advice and tested solutions to increase the safety of those who are aging. Normal aging results in weakened muscles, lesser balance, and decreased eyesight. There are techniques to compensate for these lesser abilities. An individual, no matter what age, can learn these techniques and become empowered. Some suggestions such as practicing alertness and not putting your hands in your pockets are very simple. Various methods to avoid conflict are discussed. How about a loud, but not too loud, apology? The author demonstrates by the use of figures various body movements which use the momentum of the attacker's body. The techniques use a soft, rather than a hard physical movement. I highly recommend this book to be followed by continuing training by an instructor trained in self defense for those of us who are growing older!!!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Read 24 mai 2014
Par Bill Hunt - Publié sur
This book is a wonderful eye-opening treatment of a topic most of us seniors don't even think about (until it's too late). The main benefit is the discussion of the mindset required for self defense safety, including many practical examples throughout. While the book does discuss specific tactics, it is not meant to be a "how-to" treatment of the subject. My son was a Shotokan Karate practitioner for over ten years and I watched his classes and progress as a dad, so I know one can't learn this material from a book. The author makes this point repeatedly, but still discusses many helpful specifics. A meaningful read should result in a new awareness, and those interested would benefit from seeking personal hands-on instruction.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Good for all seniors! 13 mai 2014
Par Ewood - Publié sur
As a young senior I had never thought of the special threats that will face me the rest of my life. This book does a very good job of warning seniors and advising them on the physical limitations we have. It stresses the need to think ahead to plan and practice our reactions to many threatening situations. But most importantly it empathizes the need to get away from bad situations. Many helpful tips are provided on how to react quickly to put an attacker off guard to allow you to get away. The author gives helpful instruction on how seniors can physically defend themselves given our limited strength, flexibility, eyesight, etc. The knowledge I have gained from reading this relatively short book may someday save me or a loved one. For this reason I would highly recommend this to any senior.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 A needed book on an rarely discussed topic 4 juillet 2014

This is a very informative book on a very neglected subject - self defense for seniors. The author states that this is not an instruction manual, but offers insights and explanations of what martial arts techniques will work for seniors. Particularly useful are such simple but effective concepts as"making a shoulder disappear" or the "arm trap-push away", which are simple but effective evasive measures. He also discusses which techniques are best for seniors. This book is extremely useful.
For those who wish to train, but can't find a class geared for seniors, I would recommend "MUGGING -YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF" by Liddon Griffith. This book is an instructional manual with effective but simple techniques along with training tips and drills especially for seniors. The book grew out of a training course that the author taught in the 70's. Both these books are valuable for seniors wishing to learn self defense.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Entertaining presentation of practical techniques for senior safety 10 mai 2014
Par NWJo - Publié sur
This book is a well-balanced presentation of techniques that can be used to increase the safety of every senior. Beginning with common sense avoidance techniques then progressing into kicks jabs and punches. Along the way, you will be entertained with stories and statistics from notorious cases where self-defense played a pivotal role in the outcome.

Instructions are well written and presented in sequence of complexity and difficulty from a senior’s perspective. Emphasis is placed on techniques that use the least impact and force required to be effective in a given situation. I have used the steps and diagrams to practice stances and moves alone and with others. They were concise and easy to understand.

I found the martial arts techniques based on Ken Chin Wing Tai easy to perform for the most part. I’m not particularly athletic, and I was reluctant to try any of the moves at first, but I was able to get pretty far by starting with proper body positioning exercises and working my way up to a few moves on my son. It was nice to have the thread of an established martial art regimen throughout the book.

Overall, I found this book to be a great read. It has given me some new techniques and has changed my thinking about staying safe in public places.
